Hmmmm..... followed the directions, saw it in the Office 2007 list, turned it on, asked the document to recheck itself, but I still can't get the button/actions for John 3:16 to appear. Will spot check a few more, but I'm mystified why it isn't working. L3 Smart Tag still works.

Well, after spot checking every scripture reference & format (short, full, etc.) I can think of, and also cycling thru turning off / on all smart tags, rechecking the document, etc., only L3 smart tags are working.

    So close!!! [:'(]

I just noticed that I've gotten holier (remembering an OT thread on gaining holiness by losing post counts)... Looks like my forced email change from my old ISP (verizon)  to the one that bought them (frontier) has lost all my old posts.

Those of you who've already been through this, will I stay holy (sans post count)? [;)] Or will they eventually catch up with me?

Post a comment to David Ladiges' profile and ask him to fix it for you. It should end up in his email Inbox, assuming he's got it set to notify him when someone posts a comment there, which is the default.

Did you have them working for L3 already?

On Office 2007, did you have to do anything special to get them to work? I'm getting everything for the happy path that the support article shows in the pictures at http://www.logos.com/articleviewer/530 . In Word 2007, they're there. It looks like they should be working. But I get no dotted purple line, & no menu.

    Hey Bill,

In V3 I had Smart Tags working in Word 2003, 2007 and the Beta of 2010. I just tried using V4 in both 2003 and 2007 with no problems. Try typing your scripture verse and then hitting space to see if it gives you the underline

Works in Office 2010. It doesn't underline the reference though. You have to right click on the reference and select "more actions."

I initially had trouble in Word 2007. I persevered with a space then it worked when I hit Enter/newline! Since then it has worked after hitting a space!

EDIT: It seems to require some learning. I couldn't get an OT passage to work eg. 1 Chron 3.2. Finally got Josh 1.3 to work and then 1Chron 3.2 worked (no space after 1). But finally 1 Chron 3.2 worked!

I've noticed that both Bill and I (who can't get this working) are using 64-bit Vista. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Any of you others who are getting it to work also running with 64-bit Vista? If not, maybe we have the culprit.

Not yet. I can't. I have a browser tab open with a partially completed online survey (several pages worth; time down the drain if I cancel it) which I'm waiting on a reply to some email before I can finish it, so I don't want to reboot just now. Will try again tomorrow or whenever I can, after rebooting. Nobody else seems to have had to reboot though, so that would be odd. But you're right, it's always worth trying.

Yes, I'll let you know too, if I find a fix for it.

I found this on a software support forum after Googling for other reasons SmartTags might not work: "Often, the reason SmartTags don't work is because you have a language conflict. SmartTags are usually language-specific. With the cursor in text where you expect a SMartTag to appear, go to Tools/Language/Set language. Is it English (or whichever language version of Word you've installed)?" I selected some of the text where I was typing Scripture references and checked the Language. It was set to "English (Canada)", so I tried setting it to "English (United States)." That didn't help either.

Based on your mention of security, I checked in my Word "Trust Center" settings and noticed that Macro Settings was set to "Disable all macros with notification." That was a bit too restrictive for me (I'd been noticing that macros haven't been working for me lately) so I relaxed it a bit to "Disable all macros except digitally signed macros." I figured that wouldn't affect SmartTags at all, because they are not implemented as macros, and indeed it didn't make any difference.

I also noticed that "Trust access to the VBA project object model" was not checked, so I checked that, and that didn't fix SmartTags either.

So I'm stumped. I think we need Logos to provide a debug version of the DLL with diagnostic logging output to figure out what's going on and why it isn't working. Is the event that triggers the DLL being called even getting picked up? If the DLL is being called, where is it failing silently?

Actually, I did just think of something else: I wonder if there is some registry setting that we should have which we don't have? I've done a search through my entire registry for the text "SmartTags" (with "Match whole string only" unchecked). I did find Logos4SmartTagsLib among the TypeLib entries, and other mentions of it scattered around. I'd like to see what someone for whom SmartTags is working finds in their registry. Here's something interesting, in particular, that I found in my HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Smart Tags key. There's a key in there called "Recognizers" which includes recognizers for all the Microsoft SmartTags, namely date, phone, stockticker, and time. But none of those other CLSIDs are expandable, so there don't appear to be "recognizers" for the Logos Bible reference smart tags. And Logos doesn't appear under Applications. And Logos isn't mentioned in any of the "Actions" keys. Someone else for whom this is working, could you check your registry for these?

     image

Bill, are you able to get other SmartTags besides Logos ones to work? Date, Phone number, etc.? I am. It's just the Logos ones that don't work.

    Hi David,

If you meant macro permissions, I'd already done that... I changed them to the loosest setting, but still no joy...  Afterwards, I reset to my preferred setting: Disable all macros except digitally signed macros.

If you meant Micro permissions, I'm with Rosie - need help what you meant.

Scott, SmartTags are an Office feature that allow you to install some "smart" behavior for certain types of things that you type into an Office application (dates, times, addresses, phone numbers, etc.). Logos has implemented a SmartTags module so that if you type in a Bible reference, Word will recognize and mark it as a SmartTag. As soon as it's recognized a little image icon will pop up which provides a menu of choices when you click on it. One of those choices will be to insert the actual Bible text for the Scripture reference. I haven't been able to get it working on my machine so I can't tell you more than that. But if you poke through this thread you'll find instructions for how you're supposed to be able to get it working. Sorry to make you wade through all of that, it isn't yet documented succintly on the wiki nor in the Help file, as it's still in beta testing for Logos 4.1. If you don't have the beta version you won't be able to try it out. You'll have to wait until 4.1 ships.

Hi Scott, they're a feature of MS-Office that will allow a Logos app (its Smart Tag) to pass verse info. If you have Office, you may already use Smart Tags (Actions in Office 2010) when you paste something & get the little popup menu that allows you to paste formatted from source, destination, or unformatted text.

Similarly, If Logos is open (L4; with L3, it'll open Libronix first) when you type a Scripture reference, you'll get a wavy line under it--similar to when MS-Word thinks you have a spelling or grammar error. Hovering will get you the popup that allows you to do one of several actions. You can replace the reference with the passage, invoke CBV, start the Passage Guide on that passage, open a Bible to that passage, etc.

For L4, Smart Tags for MS-Office are now in beta test & working for most users. I'm one that they aren't yet working for.

For  L3 & Office 2003 & 2007, Smart Tags work with Word and Power Point. For beta L4 & Office 2003 & 2007 users, Word works, but I don't remember seeing reports from  Power Point users for whom it's working. For beta L4 & Office 2010, Bradley reported that Power Point had an internal error that prevented it from working.

Smart Tags are an MS feature, so not available in other Office suites.

    Hope this helps.

    Bill

You and I are in the same boat on this,

Those I've noticed whose smart tags aren't working seem to be Office 2007... So I'm wondering if there's a trend, there...

So, beta testers, would you mind sounding off?

If your smart tag ISN'T working, which version of Office are you on -- 2003? 2007? or 2010?

If your smart tag IS working, which version of Office are you on -- 2003? 2007? or 2010?

Hi Leigh. Chime in on this other thread, where we're trying to track down why SmartTags doesn't work for a very small number of us (including me, and BIllS). You might find a solution there for yours, or maybe you'll find you're in that same small category that Bill and I are in, for which we hope Bradley is able to come up with a solution with our continued assistance.
