Yes, that is what I meant.

A little more info... it appears to work only if Logos4 is running. Is this the way it should work? I thought I remembered from smart tags in the past I did not have to have logos running for it to work so, I have been testing without Logos running.

I suspect this has been my issue all along.

The Logos 4 smart tag requires Logos 4 to be running in order to function; this is by design (and noted at http://www.logos.com/articleviewer/530).

If you're getting something different, upload your SmartTag.log file and we'll take a look.

Bradley meant you should not run either application via the right click "Run as administrator" whether you have a Windows Administrator account or a Standard user account. But even then Smart Tags may not work!

What version of Office? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

I assume also that you don't see the action listed in the AutoCorrect Options dialog (as shown at http://www.logos.com/articleviewer/530)?

Do you have Vista or later with UAC turned off?

I have installed Beta 9, and am running Office 2010.  I do not have the Logos action:

    ...

I did reboot after the install, started logos, and then started word.  Any suggestions?

Looks like you're running Vista (or later). Do you have UAC turned off? If UAC is on, do you run either Logos 4 or Word "as administrator" (i.e., elevated)?

If UAC is turned on, choosing "Run as administrator" for either Logos 4 or Word will stop the smart tag from working. This is due to security changes in Windows Vista (and later).

I have not tested with UAC turned off, but it's likely not to work either. (Apart from the issues with the smart tag, I'd also strongly discourage it, due to the increased risk of malware.)

Office 64-bit is not supported. As per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681792.aspx, "If users in your organization depend on existing extensions to Office, such as ActiveX controls, third-party add-ins, in-house solutions built on previous versions of Office, or 32-bit versions of programs that interface directly with Office, we recommend that you install 32-bit Office 2010 (the default installation) on computers that are running both 32-bit and 64-bit supported Windows operating systems."

There's not a good reason to install 64-bit Office unless you're using a spreadsheet or database larger than 2GB.

I have not tested with UAC turned off

    Hi Bradley,

I've been running with UAC OFF since nearly day 1 with Vista.... I'm also running a router firewall, a personal firewall with outbound control, anti-virus that updates multi times a week (sometimes even multi times in a day), & also anti-malware protection. I don't plan on turning UAC back on, though I, too, don't recommend that casual users turn it off.

But I'll try turning it on to see if that corrects the problem.

From my testing, it doesn't matter whether UAC is on or off: in both cases, the smart tag will work only if both Logos 4 and Word are launched normally. If either is set to "Run as administrator", the smart tag will not work (due to enhanced security in the OS). (The only difference between the two UAC settings is whether you not you get prompted to confirm that you want to run the program as an administrator.)

With UAC on, I now have to give it permission to launch L4. [:@]

I checked properties on my quicklaunch icon to start L4. It was starting it as administrator... if I remember right, many of us did that to overcome an earlier issue with touchpad scrolling. Anyway, I've unchecked it. Restarted L4. Restarted Word with the standard quicklaunch icon (without admin; it's grayed out & can't be picked).

Still no luck. When I recheck smart tags in the document with several scripture references, there's no change in the behavior. Not working. I'll be back after the reboot from turning UAC back off.

    Here's the new log file:

I'm back... no change... Even after another reboot, every reference triggers this error in the logfile:

ERROR: Can't access Logos 4 Bible reference recognizer; ignoring this text.

Thanks for your help... More suggestions? By the way, how would we know if we were running 64 bit Office? (I don't think I am but wanted to double check...) If the indication is which program files directory it's installed in, then mine's in Program Files (x86), not Program Files. I think that means it's 32 bit...

If you were running 64-bit Office, you wouldn't even get the logfile (because it's technically impossible for a 64-bit program to load the 32-bit smart tag DLL).

I have no suggestions at this point, as I'm unable to reproduce the problem here: when I ensure that both Logos 4 and Word are not running elevated, everything works as expected. It's a long-shot, but it might help to run the "/register" command as described at http://wiki.logos.com/Hyperlinks to ensure that all the registry keys are set correctly. Make sure to do this from a regular, non-elevated command prompt. (The primary registry keys for the smart tag must be correct, or else it wouldn't appear in the Word options dialog, and wouldn't create a log file. However, perhaps the registry keys for inter-process communication are not set correctly.)

The ONLY user I have is an administrator. Do I have to do anything different than Start | Run?

I tried it anyway... it said it had registered L4 successfully...

Same error in the Logfile, attached.
    0121.SmartTag.log

I'm also attaching my test file, in case there's anything unusual in its settings.
    7080.Smart Tags.doc

What now? Other Smart Tags (including L3) will work. Everything else on my system appears to be working.

It might be worthwhile as a few permissions would be affected with running elevated in your current installation.

Ensure UAC is on and run everything normally by just double-clicking shortcuts or links. For a quick install you can try Method 3 at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers (I don't recommend the other Methods in this case).

Yes, I recall that used to happen for me all the time and it might have been one of the reasons I switched UAC off. I think I had first tried enabling "run as administrator" on the Logos icon to avoid the UAC prompt, and then ran into other problems or was cautioned that Logos doesn't recommend doing that. Anyway, I would not want to re-enable UAC right now, especially now that I hear that it doesn't fix the SmartTags problem.

Bradley, any chance you or someone else from Logos could connect remotely to either Bill's or my machine to investigate why it isn't working for us? I'm not all that interested in getting it working for me (since I was never a SmartTags user anyway), but I want to get to the bottom of this so I can help other forum users who encounter this problem.

    Hi Dave,

I did... then I found out I couldn't set many of my apps to be run by all users, & I deleted the account.

Maybe I'll set it up again just to run this test, if we can't interest someone in logging in remotely.

choosing "Run as administrator" for either Logos 4

    Hi Bradley,

After a reboot, I double checked my L4 shortcut & discovered that "Run as administrator" was still checked on Logos. (I'd turned it off earlier... don't remember turning it back on, but I've made a lot of changes trying to debug.)

I've unchecked it. Rebooted again. Triple checked that it's still unchecked. But still no joy.

Bill, I wonder whether the fact that Logos was installed with UAC disabled causes some problems? Maybe we need to completely reinstall Logos while UAC is enabled in order to get beyond this problem? I'm not willing to take the time to do that right now, but if you are, I'd be interested to hear your experiences of whether it fixes it. UAC is the biggest pain.

    Bill,

I've added some more logging to the Smart Tag, which may help show where the problem is. Please unzip the attached file and replace your L4SmrtTg.dll file with this new one. (If Word is running, it may have it locked, so you'll need to shut down Office applications first.) As before, post the log file here and I'll take a look. 6710.L4SmrtTg.zip

CoramDeo, "no joy" is one of several idioms for a negative outcome -- "no dice," "no soap," "no luck," etc. Not meant literally, of course. I believe "no joy" is originally British slang, but we used it all the time in the aviation world. It means the pilot does not have visual contact with the other air traffic in the area or a landmark when they should have been able to see it (e.g., they've been alerted to it by radar traffic control). http://en.mimi.hu/aviation/no_joy.html

    Kevin,

In the Add-Ins section of the MS 2007 "Word Options" do you see "Logos Bible Software 4 (Bible References) under the "Active Application Add-ins?

    Yes, I do.

In Word 2010 you have to select "Manage: Actions" not COM Add-ins. Then make sure the "enable actions" box is checked.

I have not had any problem at all with the new Smart Tags (Additional Action) in Word 2010.  But I wonder if it is supposed to work in PowerPoint?  It shows up in Excel (albeit only as open bible to, not replace with passage) but not in PowerPoint.

Is there a way to install it for PowerPoint?

    Hi Fred

I can enable it by going into Powerpoint Options, selecting Add-Ins, at the bottom of the screen selecting "Manage Smart Tags" and clicking Go. This enables you to turn on Logos SmartTags. (Hope this is clear, in a rush and haven't got time to include screen shots at the moment)

However, as per your comment on Excel, it provides the ability to open a Bible but not to replace a passage. It would be really useful if the replace feature were there as well.

PowerPoint 2010 is not supported for two reasons:

    1) It passes single words to our implementation of ISmartTagRecognizer::Recognize, yet tags them as IF_TYPE_PARA not IF_TYPE_SINGLE_WD.

    2) It passes null as the Target parameter to ISmartTagAction::InvokeVerb.

Microsoft said that Smart Tags are deprecated in Office 2010, but I didn't expect them to break the internal implementation; it may just be an oversight on their part.

    Used to
have Smart Tags in an earlier version of Word with L3.

    Now have Word
2007 on new laptop with L3 and L4

WHICH OF YOUR STEPS HAVE I MISSED?

Word 2007 has “Smart Tags” option “clicked”

Bradley, I have ensured that I don't have either Logos 4 or
    Word running elevated.

    Bradley’s Smart Tags
log is now in Logos 4 Log Drawer , 6710.L4SmrtTg.zip

Bradley I have identical Registry key: etc ie. Can you
check the following key in Registry Editor

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6038263/uploads/attachments/78/8231.Key.JPG

    Mitch’s
suggestion: Mine appears as you have described. Ie I  see "Logos Bible Software 4
(Bible References) under the "Active Application Add-ins?

    Per Rosie: I
have “poke through this thread you'll
find instructions for how you're supposed to be able to get it
    working.”

    Hi Steve,

Smart Tags for L3 runs fine on Office 2007 (both of which I have). But L4 smart tags aren't yet working for some of us. If you've got the log file, sounds like you're similarly affected: it's installed but not yet working.

We're all waiting for a Logos "next step."

    Grace & Peace,
    Bill

Anything else you'd like to try?

The most likely explanation for the error you're seeing is that standard COM marshalling isn't working. To repair, try this:

    1. Open an Administrator Command Prompt
    2. Enter the following commands:

    cd C:\Windows\System32
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    cd C:\Windows\SysWow64
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll

    HI Bradley,

All commands were successful. Still no wavy line.

    Here's the log file:

    7571.SmartTag.log

    Bradley,

Does the Word SmartTags DLL use the COM API to interact with Logos4, or some other methods?

If via the COM API, maybe a tiny stand-alone app (outside of Word), that connects to Logos4, and attempts to access John 3:16 etc, might help determine failings such as above?

Clearly, if the COM API can't talk, any kinds of messing around with settings, macros, or otherwise of Word will change nothing.

(And if SmartTags is NOT using the COM API, then nothing I've said here is very useful.)

A little related: Is the limit against SmartTags in Word-64bits, a limit on Word-64 using a 32-bit DLL, rather than some limit in COM API or Logos4 itself?

[Off Topic of SmartTags: And if you are still reading: Would a 64-bit build of Logos4 and/or the SQL subsystem deliver any useful performance gains?]

Bradley, I tried this too, and I have the same error messages in my SmartTag.log file:  5265.SmartTag.log
