The latest offering from the writers of the New American Commentary series is on the book of Hebrews by David Allen.
It looks like it has been available since August

Does anyone know anything about this particular commentary or its author? It's apparently too new to get any reviews from places like BestCommentaries.com.

David Allen is the Dean of the School of Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He previously wrote a book called Lukan Authorship of Hebrews. I bet he's included that material in this commentary.

Dr. Allen has spent a number of years working through the text of Hebrews. His dissertation has now been published (Lukan authorship), and is a compelling argument for a Lukan authorship. I have had this book on pre-order for quite some time, and received it a number of weeks ago. After glancing through it I noticed that the introduction is significantly larger than any of the other volumes in the series. Also, Allen boast that his exegesis of Heb 6.1-6 is the most extensive and longest discussion in print in any commentary. I do not consult the NAC series all to often, but as a student of Hebrews I grab every major commentary that comes of the presses as soon as I can. I have benefited from his articles and dissertation in the past, I suspect that this will be the case with his commentary as well.

Nice summation, Cliff, I have ordered it. I preached through Hebrews last year and found that half of what I own was written by George Guthrie--NIVAC, ZIBBCNT, CNTUOT, lol. His stuff was fantastic. I also bought the hardcover in the Paideia series and found it quite good to. Any other favorites of yours?
I like Apples. Especially Honeycrisp.

Lost of reward view - he believes Hebrew 6 is dealing with genuine believers. Basically he believes the other views below have erred in viewing the "if they fall away" of Hebrews 6:6 as apostasy. This lunches him into a lengthy word study of him trying to prove from the Septuagint and other sources that, that is not the case.
I would like to see Carson interaction with this view in his forth coming commentary on Hebrew as Carson sides with the 'Test of Genuiness view'. O'Brien (from what I have read) seems to side broadly speaking with either the 'Test of Genuineness view' or the 'Hypothetical view' in his Pillar Commentary, it is not that clear to me. It will also be interesting to see what side Moo comes down on in his forth coming commentary on Hebrews.
So these are the views Allen interacts with 1) The Loss of salvation view 2) The Hypothetical view 3) The Test of Genuineness view 4) The Means of Salvation view (which is a variation of the Test of Genuineness view held by Thomas Schreiner) and Allens view 5) The Loss of reward view.
What I will say of this commentary(of what I have read so far) is that I admire the clarity by which Allen writes. Hope this helps?

Well, the last post here was in September. It is now May and those of us who signed up for the resource have been waiting eight months for it.
If the book wasn't in print, I could understand this, however it has been available since last September. There are approximately 277 titles in pre-pub. Don't ask me to count the number of titles approved and awaiting release by Logos, but I'm sure it's substantial.
I have long thought the pre-pub program was a bad idea, but now I'd venture to suggest it's a joke! And yes, sadly I'm signed up for the NAC Hebrews and also at least one other title - I've forgotten.....

Yes i am anxious to see this finished too. Dr Allen was an interim pastor for our church for about 1.5 years. His teaching was very good and we were blessed with each of his messages. He preached/taught a few of his sermons from Hebrews and his teaching was powerful.

If you login to Logos and select Account (in the top right side of the page), you can select the tab Orders and it will show all books that you have on pre-order.
EDIT: the status of this commentary is under contract, which i am guessing means it has been sent out of house from Logos and they are awaiting its completion.

I wonder about that every time I look at my preorders. It's one of the oldest pre-orders I have, and the oldest single volume pre-order.

Folks,
I think the message here should be if you see me signed up for a particular resource in pre-pub, pass it up! Every time I sign up for a pre-pub, the same thing happens. And the list of pre-pubs keeps growing.
What I originally wanted the Hebrews commentary for is now long past. The only reason I stay signed up now is to complete my NAC set. I'm now 73 years old and wonder if I'll live to see the NAC Hebrews!

Nope. FTP=File Transfer Protocol. Logos puts all their resources there before they're released. ftp://ftp.logos.com .

Will this volume automatically be added to the library of those who have NAC as part of the Scholar's Silver package? I know that packages are sold with a license for a work that has yet to be completed.

David, the series sold in the packages are sold "as is". All future volumes must be bought separately.

Notcied tonight that the series tag for the Hebrews volume is
"The New American Commentary"
while the other 38 volumes in the series are tagged with
"New American Commentary"
Can we get the series tag on the Hebrews volume fixed so it appears with the rest of the series?

My own experience has been that if bundled, additional volumes of a series like the NAC typically get added in at the next major update. In other words, I could have waited when I bought Logos 3 QF, or whatever it was, because 3-4 NAC volumes were added to the same level base package in Logos 4 (LE?). Sorry, I can't remember the exact versions.
The point is, I had the use of those NAC volumes for several months before Logos 4 came out, but it would have been cheaper to wait. But not free - because to do the upgrade, in which I got other books, it would have been a minimum $70 crossgrade cost. So factor all that in, and if you need/want the volumes now, it may make sense to go ahead and get a few, even if they are later included in a future base package update.
