Yippee! I see we now have a shipping date for this resource – 15/9/10!
Gee Alan.
What month is number 15? [;)]
Just teasing.
It's an European thing. They have 30 months of 12 days each on the otherside of the pond.[:)]

What month is number 15?
Or as we computer scientists do it in alphabetical sort order, that would be September 10, 2015 (actually, it should be 15/09/10 to be exact). Now that's a LONG time to wait for this resource. [;)]
15/9/10!
We Canadians like our days to come first, too, eh?
15/9/10! We Canadians like our days to come first, too, eh?
The only way to make it truly unambiguous is to use 4-digit years and spell out the month (or at least its abbreviation). Now we get to dispute whether it's better to do it as September 15, 2010, or 15 Sept 2010. I personally like the latter as it looks cleaner and is easier to punctuate in a complicated sentence, since there's no need for a comma. But my American roots make me prefer the former for stand-alone dates, like at the top of letters.
Oh boy...
Funny, I got used to naming files YYYYMMDD 20100805_Filename
I read that three times and thought it said Canaanites. I think it's time for bed. LOL.
Sometimes reality is funnier than our attempts at humor.
Canaanites.
Yes, time for this "Canaanite" to power down the computer as well!
However obscurely you may arrange your dates, [;)] isn't it good news that ESV Study Bible Notes are to be ready on 15th September 2010? [:D]
Thank you Alan for bringing this back on topic. ;-)

It is good that the ESV Study bible notes are ready on 15/09/10
The online version of the ESV Study Bible allows the user to hear the text read. I assume this feature will not be included in the Logos version.
If it would, there would be one more very happy guy here... [:)]
The ESV does have LOGOS's own Read Aloud feature activated. Is the on-line ESV Study Bible a better implementation of text to speech than LOGOS's own?
It's not text to speech, it's a proper narration. They even offer it via an API to websites. We use it on our church's website (look for the listen link): http://www.bethel-clydach.co.uk/sermons/?sermon_id=448
Yes, Mark is right. It is narration, not the computer voice reading. The nice think about it is that it is possible to navigate verse by verse. So you can use it for your daily reading. It would be excellent addition to the ESV Bible in Logos.
The online version of the ESV Study Bible allows the user to hear the text read.
This is not to be confused with the fact that it allows you to hear the red text. But the red text read does not sound different from the un-red text that is read.
Perhaps they should figure out how to do that. [;)]

What about the un-read un-red text? [;)]

I wonder what Æthelred the Unready would have to say about all of this.

Speaking of red I think Phillip prefers his a little more like this ... with the standard text in lime green of course
But getting back on topic, I concur with Dave its great that the ESV SB is being released on the 15/09/10....
although Logos and Crossway could have save a lot of confusion and released it on the 10/10/10 but we've waited long enough.
Mr. Wojnar,
I am confused whether or not the Logos version of the ESV Study Bible will include the narration or will it have the computer voice reading? Thanks, Blane
Blane,
The narration available online will not be a part of the ESVSB in Logos, it will be the computerized voice.
Thank you Thomas

Yes, Thomas is right. Logos has a computer voice reading. ESV Study Bible on-line however has a great audio narration. It would be great to have it in Logos but there is no information from Logos that they would consider implementing that to the Logos version of ESV Study Bible.
Just a thought - this makes sense. The on-line reading voice is not part of the ESV Study Bible. I own the ESV Study Bible and it does not have the reading voice.
On the other hand, purchasing the ESV Study Bible did give me access to the on-line version with the study voice.
I know your right Floyd, I have it also and I use the online version a lot. It is very well done and easy to use. I was just curious about the narration I hate the computer voice in Logos. I've decided for myself that I really don't need the ESV Study Bible in Logos, ESV's online Bible is working quite well for my purposes. It's not like Logos isn't giving me plenty of opportunity to spend money. God bless, Blane
Blane, just to make it clear: the voice reading in Logos is not Logos native feature, it just uses Windows (or other OS) voice reading function. So the quality of the installed voices in OS influences the quality of the voice reading function also in Logos. I too own ESV Study Bible (the paper version) and use on-line version for daily reading (listening). Still I am really looking forward to have it in Logos. To have all the notes integrated to the Logos system is way better thing than just stand-alone ESV SB. The narration would be just on top of it and I would really like to have that but even without it Logos version of ESV SB is "must-have" for me.

I have the hardcopy version, too, but I chose to go with the Logos Study Notes for these reasons:
Bohuslav: I was wondering if Logos might work for permission from Crossway to give all ESV SB purchases the code for online access/listening. I wouldn't think that be a huge problem, unless it is due to a little thing we like to call "more profit."
I'm on the fence still. I have it on my ipad and in print...It could be handy on logos though. I guess I need to make up my mind by next week.[:^)]
i have thought about selling my hard copy--bless someone who isn't into Logos. I have an ESV paper version that is much easier to carry than the SB behemoth. And with all that info on Logos soon . . . . and the sale will help pay for the notes. OR, i could give it away.
I have it on my ipad and in print
Ok John, now you've just stirred up more interest in getting an ipad... will this link into the webpage to listen to the narration? Can't wait until the Notes ship!!! I've been sitting on the fence when it comes to getting either an ipad or iphone.
It could be handy on logos though
Anything on logos is handy, but I'm too cheap to get it all, but the EVS will be a great tool.
Catching up on all the messages, the Forums really took off, more then I thought, with lots of good info to boot. And we have Andrew back too, good to see you Brother!
Ralph,
Crossway actually has a ESV study bible app with all the great features:
Highlighting
Note taking
searching
study bible notes
and yes the narration!
its a wonderful tool and only $14.99.

Yes, I have it (I mean the iPhone version) and it's great. The text follows the narration voice reading. Perfect. But I need to have it in Logos. I want to stop voice reading in the place I hear something what interests me and start Bible Word Study right from the spot. You can do that only in Logos. And you can continue with all the power of Logos Library. That is the reason to have it in Logos with all the goods. Before we have it in Logos (including the narration) I will keep my iPhone ESV SB from Crossway [;)]
and yes the narration
Thanks John, I guess I will have to start checking out the iphone and ipad... probably heavily favoring the ipad. Hope the good folks at Crossway will work with logos a bit better!
And you can continue with all the power of Logos Library.
Exactly Boshslav! That's something that I would pay extra for, if Crossway and logos shared, or give permission to meld the products in our PC Bible software!
I currently use the "read" function at times, because it makes me read the text without distractions, so that I'm in a reading mode without stopping (the only way it's not irritating, with out thinking to myself "what did she say?"). I also have noticed that the reading function doesn't work with all of my books, and better with some then with others.
I'm still a big fan of playing my Bible cassettes while driving, so I can get the whole book in my head... great stuff to meditate with while stuck in traffic[:^)]. Did I just reveal how antiquated I am???

At least they're not on 8 track tapes.
I have the printed ESV Study Bible, and hence online access to it also. I also have the Kindle version from Amazon (cheap). And every soon, I will have the Logos one!!!
Some time back, I purchased one of the spoken MP3s of the ESV from Crossways, as a download. I have them as files on my old Nokia phone, so I can hear them when waiting, with little else to do whie waiting for a train/bus etc.
I got a very basic Windows program working, using the COM API feature of the Logos 4.1 Beta, so I could jump around in the ESV in Logos, and my WIndows Media Player would automatically jump to the correct MP3 file, and within about 1 verse. The MP3 would play whatever verse I jumped to, and the screen would update after every verse, so the audio and text would follow along.
I expect others would value such thing, so after Logos 4.1 goes Gold (Release), subjct to interest and my "free time", I will explore making this work more solid so those wanting it could also use it. They would each need to purchased the MP3 set from Crossways of course (and have ESV in Logos).
Better would be if Logos added "Recorded Audio Bible" support directly into the core product, so anyone could use any recorded Bible they cared to purchase/obtain. All it would need is a "config" file that linked MP3 file names to Book/Chapter, and maybe some timing data, so the verses in the audio track within Logos4 is a little closer. For now, I just scale the verse-count of a chapter against the time play-time for the chapter, so its close, but not perfect.
1) Bring on EVS Study Bible for Logos ...
EDIT: The above is full of grammer/spelling errors. Such is life ... [:)]
Hello all. Not into posting that much but I do have a question from this discussion.
When reading the ESV or any Bible from the Logos.com site, how to you turn on the narration?
I have tried the computer voice with Logos but some of the pronunciation is lacking.
Thanks for your help.
Larrie; I have tried the computer voice with Logos but some of the pronunciation is lacking.
Logos' computer animated voice is what it is Larrie. The ESV Study Bible ( hard copy ) when purchased, comes with a code that gives you access to an online version of the Bible. It is a great site and has a very nice narration of the Bible. I have Logos 4 and assume that you have one the Logos products as well. Hope this helps.
I don't have this resource so I don't know how it works, but the notes are a separate resource right? Why can't Logos just incorporate it into the footnotes of the regular ESV after every verse? Then it could just pop up in the power lookup window.
I'm guessing it will be like other study bible notes, which are all separate resources. They can be linked with the Bible they are associated with (by setting them both on the same Link Set) and then it's just like having the Power Lookup Window along side scrolling together (only it would be faster than PL). Probably the reason they don't encorporate it into the existing ESV is so as not to affect people who have the ESV but are not buying the study notes.

Blane is correct. Logos does not have any real narration for any of the Bible versions it ships, just the computer text-to-speech voice that comes with Windows, which as you've discovered is less than satisfactory. Some people have been able to find third-party voices to add to their Windows setup which are better than the built-in ones. Here's some info about where to find those voices: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/8523/67864.aspx#67864

They could just make an entirely separate resource with the ESV in it.
Hopefully it will be just much more than the pop-up notes and incorporate all lthe maps, charts etc which would not go so well in pop-ups but I can see what you are saying would be advantageous to moblie users. It has been done with the NET Bible so its not a new concept.
Hopefully it will be just much more than the pop-up notes
I only have a few Study Bibles in Logos. Are there some that are only popups?

NET Bible is the only at this stage.... and it comes in both a specially created bible with the notes in pop-ups and as a separate resource file, but it has been produced by a third party. The nature of NET lends itself to this sort of presentation, ESV Study Bible and the majority of others incorporate charts and illustrations and so are probably better handle by having separate resources where this features can be at the forefront rather than hidden away in a pop-up you might miss - but I can see a case where a pop-up version would be great for mobile users so its a shame that the ESV Study Bible doesn't follow the model done so well by NET/ Galaxie. And if the charts etc were hidden away in pop-ups attention could be brought to them by using the power look-up, but this feature would probably need some optimisation to make it a viable option.
For those who might not be familiar with NET, these are the options that are available:
Edit Note: Hover / Click works the same for the stand alone study bible notes but I didn't show the lines etc....
I'm sure there is other's out there I don't have, but most of the study bibles I have would have been acquired as part of the Thomas Nelson e-Bible Platinum Package.
Don't forget that the ESVSB releases on 9/15.
Great price on excellent resource.
Lutheran Study Bible http://www.logos.com/products/details/6398 shows up as a separate resource. It is merely the study notes, but when you click on it, you get only the study notes. You have to click on the separate ESV to get the Bible verses.
Of course, what I have done, is to link the LSB with the ESV, so that each time I look up something, the LSB synchronizes to that exact spot. Seamless, so I hardly notice they are not the exact same resource.
By the way, I do this with commentaries, so that I can jump from one to another. What a great feature. Go Logos!

Yes what you are describing is the standard way Study Bibles work in Logos and on the desktop I like the ways it works but for mobiles users I am sympathetic.. I will be one someday.
Soon we'll be able to enjoy the benefit of linking all three.....
i have made assumptions, but does anyone know if the maps etc., will be in Bible places/things?
