New Logos.Com ... What's New?

Other than the change of graphics, is there a single piece of added functionality on the new site?

The CP now suggest a final price rather than allowing users to value it through market forces, but other than than I can only find missing features and poor graphics.

Have I missed something completely ... at this point there is nothing that is user centred or related to the 'Rebuilding Logos' thread (here).

Rosie mentioned that this is a beta, and we should be reporting issues. Has that been announced by Logos? or is it just that this feels like beta (or aplha) software with much of the functionality missing, incomplete data, broken links etc.

So what have I missed, what is new?

There is indeed. (1) Faceted browsing is the main new feature. You can now explore our inventory of nearly 5,000 products to find the kinds of products that interest you. (2) There's some user intelligence going on that doesn't show you products that you already own or messaging that doesn't apply to you. We have a ton more in the works for this. (3) Product searching is also greatly improved.

Not correct. We are showing the predicted price based on what customers are bidding. What features are missing?

Yes, you have. There were numerous requests to be able to have more intelligent message and product promotions and also to indicate if you already own a product. There were also many requests for faceted browsing and product searching.

What features are missing?

I can no longer see at first glance how near the product is to completion, on a graph large enough that I can read it, how much I have bid, and what the final price is likely to be. In order to see this, I need to go to another page and then return to the original page. I find this a pain.

I cannot see that faceted browsing is that big a deal and am concern that it does not show product that I already own ... I would rather see those products and be told that I own them ... the library management on L4 is such that any opportunity to re-discover resources is welcome. This feels like hiding the similar resources that you have from view so that you consider purchasing others ... my apologies for the cynicism but that is likely the outcome. My cynicism is also banked by the size of the adverts, the wasted real estate in the banners, the use of facebook etc. This does not feel like a Harrods but a Kwik-e-mart.

Whilst not perfect I like the old site because I personally found it easy to use probably because I knew my way around it. I never had a problem finding resources that I wanted because I used the search function. If I wanted to know if there were any new books on pre-pub then all I had to do was navigate to the prepub page and there on the first page at the top of the list was the latest prepub whereas on the new site on my screen there is a graphic explanation of the process, the last channce, featured and staff pick and to see what is new I have to page down.

The new community page is, in my opinion, a functional mess where I could make and manage all of my bids on a single page on the old web site I now have to navigate to each individual product page so if you add three new CPs I would need to vist the main page 3 times and 3 individual product pages to place my bids rather than do it all on a single page.

The consolidate account report is not as good as the old reports where I could look at my current prepubs, with a total outstanding spend, my community bids and my historical spend. My historical spend was already a long report now it is concatenated with two other reports. To me the obvious 'improvement' would have been focus on making the historical report more user friendly by grouping purchases by year and allowing the sections to be expanded/closed.

I also think the new site is very busy, moving the mouse around there are a lot of distracting pop ups and changes in page activity, at the moment I find these irritating.

Overall the comparison that I would make is that the impact is like having my favourite shop completely refurbished, when I enter I am disoriented, I no longer know immediately where things are, everything is new, clean and bright but its no longer my favourite shop.

Will I feel differently in a few months or a year when I have got used to the changes? Probably. Do I like the way things are right now? Definitely not.

Sorry but my feeling is that this web site is great from a developers perspective but extremely poor from a users. Its clever, bright and dynamic but, in my opinion, it is more awkward to use than the old one.

I noticed this pretty quick. I love the new search enhancements, this will be very helpful and much, much more usable than the old site. It always perplexed me how hard it could be to find some things on the old site. The new filters are a great addition.

Many of the improvements may not mean much to those who spend most of their time in pre-pubs and community pricing. I would wager a bet, though, that most of Logos' customers spend most of their time searching and browsing released products and will benefit from the changes.

Thus far I am really enjoying the new site. It looks great, it feels great, it searches great, etc. The new site is a major improvement. Great work, Logos!

You can hide this. In the near future, it will auto-hide for repeat Pre-Pub buyers.

Actually, the old site occupied more vertical and horizontal space for the top section than the new site does with the How It Works section collapsed. The old site had 640px of content above the first Pre-Pub. The new site has 540px.

Just select the Pre-Pub facet contraint, and all you'll see are Pre-Pubs.

Finally! One positive reaction after many frustrated ones. I wrote a longer post and deleted that. To say just little: I am really surprised with the negative reactions. I find the changes interesting and refreshing. I like to learn new things. Period.

Faceted browsing is the backbone of every major eCommerce site on the internet. I can't see how it could be considered anything less than a central feature.

The main products page is customized depending on whether you have a base package or not and which base package you have. The home page slidedeck will soon have messages that are appropriate for each individual customer based on what information we know about them. We're trying to communicate with you in intelligent and personally appropriate ways.

We're shifting directions with the way we view Logos.com. It's a product just like Logos 4, and as such it will always be improving. It's not technically a beta, because we've done a lot of testing and believe that it's core functionality is stable. We have a huge list of features that we're going to be working on over the next number of months and years. This is just the very begin of the plans we have for the website.

If you feel underwhelmed with the number of new features, you're not alone. So do we. But, we do believe we made the right choice. We had to completely rebuild the site and re-architecture some of its most basic components to build a framework that can accommodate all the new features that we have planned. It took a lot of time to get the groundwork laid, but it will pay dividends as we move forward and start adding things like wishlists, ratings and reviews, more intelligent product recommendations, and many other things that we want to keep a surprise.

One thing I noticed was that I used to be able to go to a page for a particular book/resource and download the resource from that page. That feature is no longer on the 3-4 random pages I checked. Doesn't sound like a big deal maybe but I used to make a back-up on an external HD via the resource page.

It's true that this is a major capability on sites with lots of products that can be classified across a lot of different categories. However, I've never heard it called "faceted browsing". I've always heard it called "guided search" (and in fact that's what I called it in a couple of other threads today before I came across this phrase).

For it to be useful, of course, it has to be accurate. And we've already had verified in another thread that for categories like Topics and Resource Types, it currently isn't.

I agree with Chris and Bohuslav. The new site is sensational.

* Navigation is vastly improved

* Search functions are far superior,

* The presentation is cleaner and clearer with less wasted space,

* The greying out of the purchase button is highly intuitive (in keeping with the standard stylistic convention in virtually all programs and operating systems)

* Faceted browsing is not only incredibly convenient but also in keeping with the industry

* The site is clearly far more intuitively tailored to serving the user

I visited the site last night unaware that it had been updated, and was completely amazed. Click, click, click, everywhere I wanted to go, everything I wanted to see, it seemed I was never more than three clicks away. It's a beautiful piece of design.

For the record I'm speaking from the point of view of a technical writer who has been involved in usability studies.

Based on the guidance of your responses, and a lot of other tips that are floating around in other posts relating to the new web site, I can see how this might eventually be true. However, I think the way that this has been rolled out could and should have been handled differently. It really does feel like Logos is so obsessed with the latest technolgy (i.e. faceted browsing) that the customer experience seems not to matter.

I know that others like the site and one has even described it as intuitive but I am not computer illiterate having spent over 30 years in the IT industry and I find it unintuitive, awkward and plain frustrating. There's lots of pop ups but none of them guide you or helps you with a radically new, for me at least, interface. In terms of usability the reality is that without the explanations and tips here, and an hour or more exploring the site, I would not have found some better ways of finding things and turning elements off.

I know that the missing stuff is coming and the next version will be better but Logos can't keep using that explanation for everything that is released.

I think the new site is delightful! A few rough edges to be sure, but quite remarkable for just being launched. Particularly I like the new "searching"!!!!

The OLD Logos Site was not adequate; and I truly thank you much for improving on it.

It's as much as improvement as the Library is in L4 compared to L3! And that's saying a lot!

I appreciate your personal replies to my issues. I trust from my past experiences with Logos that if you say it's going to be better then I'm sure I'll like it. I'm afraid that I'm one of the people that didn't know what the grey buttons meant. Even if they're wrong some of the time, the old web site didn't do anything to tell me I already owned it so this is a big improvement which I'm sure will get better.

I also didn't know what faceted ..... is (I've already forgotten the phrase). Now that I've played with it a little, it is great already and I'm sure it'll get better also.

Overall, now that I've been educated a little on the new features and that there's a list of new ones to come, I'm satisified that in 6 months I'm going to end up wondering why I questioned it.

It will take some familiarisation, especially with the Products section. I had trouble initially finding Pre-pubs and Community Pricing and just now saw them on the main drop-down. That can be attributed to thinking the way the old site was organised. But CP does need improving, as stated by others.

The Support section is much improved; better to navigate.

Searching is also improved with results split into 3 categories.

The Account | Orders section is disappointing, though (see this thread).

There is a critical bug in Community Pricing... "Barnes' Notes on the Old and New Testaments (14 vols.) " didn't go gold during the upgrade process. Please add more votes. It is Election Day, after all ... [<:o)]

I do agree that I'd prefer a one-stop shop for CP bids like we could do on the old site--it will take a while to bid on all those new books.

Can't agree with that, sorry David. Zero clicks would be everything on the front page (and a lot of scrolling), and that obviously wasn't the case. Navigating the site now, nothing I want is more than three clicks away, most things are two clicks at maximum, and the majority of things I really want are only one click away. This is a significant advantage over the previous site with its multiple levels and non-intuitive navigation architecture.

The dropdown menus at the top of the page are my first stop. Pre-pubs are one click away, and on the left handside there's a wealth of links sorting my browsing of the pre-pubs into useful facets. I can narrow my search using a huge range of useful fields, which simply wasn't possible on the previous site. Base packages? One click and I'm on a page which provides far more information than the previous page did. Community pricing? One click and I have the same faceted browsing experience as with the pre-pubs. No more fruitless visits to the search bar, at last.

You are correct in the way that YOU count clicks [it only takes three clicks (or so) to get to any needed page]

However I was counting additional clicks after getting to the community pricing page - everything was on that page - now much more information is on the NEXT click page

And I do like what I see on the new pages - there is more room by putting it on its own page

Actually, it still is extremely useful. Yes, we're still working on categorizing, but that only means that we're already 30-35% more useful than the old site where you were completely limited to what you typed into the search box. Everything that you would have found with a regular search before has become more accurate and that will only improve.

To say that it is not useful now is a bit unfair.

I meant, "it currently isn't *accurate*". I suppose given my exact sentence that you could understand it to mean it's not useful at all, but that's not what I intended. So let me try to rephrase:

At present, the faceted browsing features of the site are useful only insofar as the results that they currently return happen to meet the needs at the moment of any individual user. For example, if I was looking for a specific lexicon and Logos has it but it's not in the Lexicon resource type, then those results aren't useful to me.

Phil, I appreciate your participation in this forum and your willingness to respond to questions and concerns with facts. I am sure that the new website will ultimately enable improved performance and increased function as you state. One of the "new functions" that I am hoping to see as a new customer is to be able to generate a "wish list" of product titles; series and/or authors that I am interested in and have LOGOS notify me (so that I don't have to go looking) when any of those resources show up on CP or Pre-pub or Sales (either as individual titles or in collections). Right now as I am actively building my library - I am spending too much time reading all the things coming out and not enough time actually using the tool because I am concerned I will miss a good deal on a resource I need/want. Any chance that kind of functionality will make it into the website in the near future?

Mark, I actually spec'ed out this very thing, but it was unfortunately one of the things that had to get cut for now. We're about to revisit our big wishlist of items we'd like to add to the website, and this is definitely an important one.

Phil, Thanks for the response and "good luck" , I am certainly am hoping that it get's prioritized high on the future feature list because I think it is great for the customer (me) and for Logos because then Logos has more data on what to put on pre-pub or CP ... so I think it is a "win-win" feature!

I love being able to see what books I have already own without being forced to check my Logos software to make sure I have it before I buy it. The site may not be perfect, but I don't expect it to be, and it IS an improvement.

As so often the case, I feel humbled and ashamed at the tone that I took at the start of this thread. My intent was only to see if we could, as a community perhaps, develop some sort of release notes. I still feel this is a beta website. There are bugs, missing features, and inaccuracies. The Logos philosophy over recent times has been to release and develop through feedback but still I am grateful to Bohuslav and Milford and others for their example.

I would still like to see a clear set of release notes, of planned features (and rough time scale if I were really greedy) and also of known bugs or known incomplete features. I think that the way it was released on us (esp. the twitter feed) suggested that there should have been a great drum roll, and a huge Ta-Da, as the site became live. Certainly my expectations were for a complete, all singing and dancing site with many of the features that had been discussed months ago. Saying that it is a beta, launching it as a beta, asking for our feedback as a beta etc. is different from full fanfare and no further information. The same site but with less disappointment.
