Hot Tip: Not Highly Rated Collection (Thanks Mark Barnes)

How do you rule out your lesser rated theologies, lexicons, commentaries, etc. when you are studying your passage so you only get hits from the resources you use all the time? Mark Barnes is glad you asked. I just want to point you to his Advanced Collections video.

Don't worry if you don't understand as he rapidly types in strings for advanced collections. Get to the part where he demonstrates how to make a "Not Highly Rated" collection and why. Brilliant. It allows you to quickly rule out resources you DON'T want when you build any collection (Do you REALLY want all 50 systematic theologies you have in your library searched when you're studying "forgiveness?" I didn't think so. You primarily want your most useful ones).

I use a simple 'exclude' tag in mytags. This is particularly useful for excluding large commentary sets and collections by authors which I know I'm not going to use (lots of homiletical or devotional material).

The beauty of Mark's idea is that you don't have to go through your library and tag or mark everything. Whatever isn't 4 stars or higher is excluded, so you just drag the "Not Highly Rated" collection into "exclude these resources" in any collection and you automatically get just your highest rated resources. Simple and elegant.

It does sound like a good idea. Mark is full of good ideas. I picked up on one of his ideas for sermon prep. He recommended printing off the passage and marking notes. I like the idea but I'm terrible with paper so I export the passage to OneNote and can mark it up there. Its quite effective and keeps it searchable. Plus I can hyperlink from the passage to my OneNote Markups. heres a sample.

The alternative, because I just create collections that are useful is to rate the resources as Mark illustrates but create eg. Bible Dictionaries as

type:encyclopedia rating:>1 (which also eliminates the few non-bible dictionaries)

If i wanted Favourite Bible Dictionaries, I could use

type:encyclopedia rating:>3
