Looking for good resources on Prayer

I've been asked to take a one-session break from our Ephesians bible study to do a session on prayer. This is definitely not one of my strengths, either experientially or doctrinally. I'm going to start (real soon now by reading through all the prayers in the N.T. I have a few L4 resources specific to prayer that I may turn to, but I won't have a ton of time for that.

There's one resource called something like "When God prayed", on Jesus' high priestly prayer in John ?17.  I haven't read it, but maybe others could comment.  Sounds as if it could be helpful.

I suggested  50 Ways to Pray by Teresa Blythe to be added to Logos' Library.

I'm sure someone else will pipe in with the exact resource. A while ago a book on every prayer in the Bible made quite a stir in pre-pub. I believe it was a multi-volume resource published only through Logos by a professor at a university. I wish i had been able to purchase it because from what was said about the testimony of the author it would have been a great resource in my library :-)

I have read a few chapters in this book and really enjoyed what I've read. Anxious to get a chance to finish it. I recommend it.

I taught a course on prayer a couple of times a few years ago. I attach my bibliography from that class, with links added where the books are available in Logos. The exact book by Bunyan on that bibliography isn't available but his A Discourse Touching Prayer is.

An Exposition on Prayer in the Bible

I got this resource on prepub and it is a good commentary, specifically very strong when discussing prayer passages in the Bible. 

One of my favorites is: E.M. Bounds. He was a chaplain during the Civil War and he got up at 4:00 every morning (till 8:00) to both pray and to write books about prayer. Probably because he spent so much time in prayer his books have an appeal and instructive power that goes beyond the mind - his words seem to reach into my guts and drive me to my knees. Logos has several of his small books on prayer.

It is "funny" you ask this now though. This morning I was on the phone with a woman who is in the hospital - in an isolation ward. As I spoke with her I had my laptop open and Logos at my fingertips. After encouraging her the best I could, I began to pray for her. As I prayed, I opened a Search window in the BIBLE Tab, selected Psalms-Proverbs as the search parameter and an ESV bible as the resource. I typed in: great God OR Lord and instantly had a list of reasons to praise our God. I went through the list personalizing / turning each Scripture into a prayer. I then typed in: Majestic God OR Lord and did the same thing. Then: one by one, mighty, holy, worthy, excellent with God OR Lord. When I finished, she thanked me and said she really needed that. I got off the phone and echoed, "Me too!" [I could probably have made one master list from the start, but at the time this is how I did it. But in retrospect, I like how with each list we had an emphasis on a different aspect for which to give Him praise.]

I have read it 3 times. It is a good treatment of prayer & fasting. It would be an excellent devotional book on prayer.

I have to warn you that the main thrust of the book is on fasting. It is very good and very applicable to prayer (and prayer and fasting go hand-in-hand; therefore, prayer is discussed throughout  as well); however, that is not the book's main thrust. I still highly recommend it.

While we're on the Piper topic and prayer I recommend Chapter 9  & 10 in When I Don't Desire God (which is also 50% off on the Christmas sale, so hurry: http://www.logos.com/product/4067/when-i-dont-desire-god). 

You may also want to look at chapter 8 (logosres:pleasuresgod;ref=Page.p_203) in Pleasures of God, which in my opinion is one of Piper's top 3 books (Desiring God, Pleasures of God, and God Is the Gospel). Also, the individual volumes of  Exposition on Prayer are 50% off for the Christmas Sale, so you can save about $100 off the price of the whole set when you purchase individual titles. I would recommend getting the whole work, however, it wouldn't even be that bad to purchase the volume that covers the part of Scripture you particularly want discussed. I find that Rosscup is particularly good in the Old Testament (premil viewpoint). 

And while you got me thinking on the topic I might as well share the best resource I have ever read on prayer:

I have read some A.W. Pink's Guide to Fervent Prayer, and knowing Pink his work on the Lord's Prayer is probably just as good. You may want to take a look at those as well, but I recommend Carson & the Piper works I referenced ahead of Pink (http://www.logos.com/products/search?q=prayer&Author=Pink,+Arthur+Walkington)
