Visual filter of O.T. quotes

Is there a clever way to create an Old Testament visual filter of quotes that are made in the New Testament? I figured out how to make a wild card visual filter of O.T. quotes in the N.T. using the Holman Christian Standard Bible, but this visual filter shows up in the N.T. I want an O.T. visual filter. I thought it would be useful to see where the N.T. used the O.T. as I was reading the O.T. Thanks!

This is an excellent request...and I am anxiously awaiting Steve Clark's answer to it. :-) He seems to really enjoy this kind of challenge...

Kaye,
get behind me .... [:O] (you shouldn't put me to the test)
i could not find a way to highlight all the words quoted from the OT, but found a way to highlight the footnotes
(click on image to view larger view in your browser)
1. Create a new Visual Filter.
2. Select Basic, your Bible with footnotes (ESV), and Footnote Text.
3. You will have to create a separate entry for each OT book (e.g. <psalms>, <deut>). Then select a highlighting method.
Notice the Purple highlighted footnote marker in the ESV for OT quote in Matt 4.
Also notice the custom highlight (that i just created) next to Duet quotes in Matt 4.The down side to this is that L4 will show all footnotes highlighted in the OT as well.
Anyway this is the best i could do [:(]0 -
Sorry for the temptation but I always learn something from your posts. :-) And I appreciate the effort!

I knew you were teasing! I am a visual learner and I always love the step by step screenshots that get posted here and in the wiki. I start with those, play around with it, expand on it and learn a whole lot that helps me.

One question, Steve: how did you make the highlighting style with Text Before that has a colored box around it? I can't see a way to do that.

i used Paint.net to create the image, then created custom Highlighting styles using those images (right click on the small images below to copy them to your computer)
Edit: Rosie i am sure you already know this, but posting for others
The image below shows the highlight style editor and where i added the image. Just click on where the image is in the editor and in the pop-up box select choose file.

But isn't this backwards?
Didn't the original poster want to see the filter show up in the OT?

Here's how I did it for the OT.
- Create a new passage list and name it "OT in NT"
- Open up the resource Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament, then select all the text in that resource. That resource has problem with scrolling, sometimes it just hangs for a while, but eventually I got it all selected. It's not that long. I clicked near the top and used my mouse wheel to scroll to the bottom while holding down the mouse button.
- Go back to the passage list and click on the Add menu. Select Add passages from...selected text. This will add all the references from the Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament resource, assuming you selected it all properly.
- Sort the passage list and delete the NT references, since we only wanted to use the OT references in this filter. (I actually saved the NT references in a separate passage list for later use).
- Create a new Visual Filter "OT/NT quotes".
- Change the type of filter to Morph.
- Set the visual filter to use the "OT in NT" passage list for the range instead of All Passages
- Enter "@V OR @C OR @P OR @R OR @N OR @A OR @X" in the search field without the quotes. I tried using a Bible search with an asterisk wildcard without success so I settled on using the morph codes.
- Select the highlight style you want to use. I used red.
- Open your bible and make sure the "OT/NT quotes" filter is on. Not all the words in the highlighted verses will be highlighted, but enough will to make it clear. (This is because Logos only highlights one of the English words associated with a matching Greek/Hebrew word. I wish it would highlight all of the associated English words)
Logos needs to add a new filter type that will highlight whole verses based on a passage list. This wildcard stuff just doesn't cut it.

Rosie,
Here are all the OT icons
The attached file below is a zip with all of the individual icons
Edit: added icon file to the wiki Highlighting -> Old Test. icons

Steve, I believe your idea would work for the Old Testament too--if you set it up to search for NT references in the OT footnotes.

Thanks Todd and all who helped! Yes Logos does need a little help here. I was scratching my head trying to figure this one out. I appreciate your help.

Great work Todd
I just tried it. Unfortunately Logos repetadely just crashes for a couple of seconds on and off, on and off. I had to turn the visual filter off.

Mac or PC? You should tell Logos. It shouldn't be crashing. Or do you mean it's freezing up? (A crash is when the program stops and goes away completely)
I experienced some crashes while trying out different things to get my filter to work, but I couldn't narrow down the cause. I may have to see if I can get it to crash again.

Here is a screen shot. Beware this filter takes about 5 or 6 minutes. I don't know if you can use any other translation except this one.

By the way I stumbled onto this visual filter based on this quote at the beginning of the book OLD TESTAMENT QUOTES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
"This set of parallel passages was derived from cross-reference information contained within the Holman Christian Standard Bible, New Testament."

Todd, I followed your lead and created a visual filter of OT quotes in the OT and NT. I really like the way it works.

PC. I mean freezing up. However, using the filter Logos ran into a kind of loop: freezing up, unfreezing, freezing up again etc. Turning off the visual filter stopped the loop.
Today, after complete reboot, there's no freezing up but the filter does not work. I'll have a second look to make sure I did all the steps you explained correctly.
Thanks!

If you use the margin type Highlight styles (Left Margin Bar Red, or some user defined margin highlight) this sort of accomplishes that.
Also, I marked both the OT refs and NT, since I mainly read the ESV and it doesn't CAP the OT quotes like NASB. I created another left margin style for that. I had initially used the same highlight style for both, but L4 crashed a lot, so I differentiated styles. (That might be a Duh point, since you usually wouldn't want to use the same markup for different conditions; maybe L4 can't tolerate that). I also had to do a separate Aramaic filter for the 2 Daniel passages in the cross-reference (probably should have just memorized them).
Thanks, Todd, for your solution and to all for the ideas.
EDIT: make that 1 Daniel Aramaic passage.

I've started a manual project along these lines:
Prov. 15:23

Here's how I did it:
In the Logos Help, under "Searchable Labels," I found some very helpful information on using Interactive Dataset Labels for Visual Filters.
My search fields are
{Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Citation"}
{Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Quotation"}
{Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Allusion"}
{Label Intertext WHERE Corpus ~ "New Testament" AND Relationship ~ "Echo"}
(I have different colors for each, but there are many ways to do it).
