IPad 2 - What are your thoughts

The new duo core processor would be nice, but I'm not sure I'm biting...yet. a Retina display would have been the best thing I could think of for improving the Logos experience on the IPad. I must say, I like the idea of the new case and I like the idea of the HDMI out for possible projection options.

What are your thoughts?

The rumours flying around the net seem to say iPad 3 might be out in September, it is said apple had issues with the high resolution screen (not sure if it was a quality or quantity thing). It has been said the new screen will likely be double the iPad 1 & 2 screen. As for any other potential improvements in 3, I have no idea, whatever new things are incorporated in to iphone 2011 (iphone 5, iphone 4x or however apple labels it) will likely show up into iPad 3.

There is always something to make you want more and wait. At some point, you just need to jump in. I think either one would rock--especially if 1's prices come down a couple hundred. Anybody heard much about that? I only know it as pre-March 2nd rumor.

I am very interested to see what difference the faster processor will have... 2x faster general processing and 9 x graphics according to claims. That seems pretty significant. The cameras are great... and added facetime, iMovie capability, etc. The HDMI output is a big plus as well... can see many uses for ministry. These really help transform this machine into a laptop replacement for me. Still regret the lack of a USB port... otherwise, seems like a great improvement. Those of you in the know... would a retina display really make THAT much of a difference... esp. for Logos???

The first moment I saw the new cover, I wasn't keen on it... as I've looked it over, I've chnaged my mind. AND... can it really clean the smudges??

Yes - retina display would double resolution in both directions - text rending sharper - closer to printed page.

Also, iPad 2 has an internal gyroscope.

I'll say this about the retina display. I thought it was a no big deal enhancement at first. My wife's 1st gen iPod touch was, well, hers. :-) it turned out to be my favorite feature over her iPod there is that much of a difference. For reading it is that much nicer.

ok... thanks... i know sometimes folks talk about resolution differences (such as on hdtv) that most people in most apps wouldn't really notice that much. As Spock used to say, "A difference that makes no difference is no difference." But not having seen a retina display, I'll take your word for it that it would significantly enhance the Logos experience. I don't know if I would want to wait though, as I leave for the field in May, and need what the iPad offers. I'll be back for a short time in October... probably... but doubt it would be worth holding off.

After making the transition to the iPhone 4 I kept thinking the retina display wasn't that big of a deal... until I would use the old iPhone which my wife assumed ownership of. I would keep thinking there was something wrong with the screen. Then I'd remember....

As has been stated with sharper text and better scaling you can fit a lot more text legibly in the same physical space. Great for any app that involves reading, Logos included.

The whole iPad problem is that it is designed for simply getting basic stuff done on the go and everyone wants to shove one more feature into an incredibly small device so that it would replace a desktop machine. At some point, you have to leave half of the gingerbread off the unit unless you want to be pre-fitted for a truss. They made it smaller this time. I think that's a hint. The world is still safe for netbooks and laptops especially of the Air variety.

Philip, do you have a first gen iPad already? If so, I'd hold out for the iPad 3, which may be available in about 6 months with a Retina display if the rumors hold true. Comparing my iPhone 4 to my iPad, the Retina display is a huge feature that is well worth waiting for.

If, on the other hand, you don't have an iPad at all, then it is a tougher choice IMO. Waiting while not having something to get by on in the meantime is a different story :-)

I plan on waiting for the iPad 3 before upgrading...even if it turns out that the September rumors aren't true. I'm happy enough with my first-gen for now.

In addition to the fact that I cannot afford one right now. The iPad has two very large negatives for me: The first is the uncertainty of whether or not there will be any Apps worth running on it after June; Rhapsody is already leaving, if Netflix, Kindle, Nook and Logos go, there is no point for me even owning an iPhone. If Apple does not wake up there is going to be an mass exodus from their products. The second reason is the weight, it is still so heavy that for extended reading most people will find themselves resting it on something. Which makes me ask myself, if it THAT heavy why not get a Mac Book Air or one of the Windows 7 ultralights that are starting to come out?

I agree with you...in fact, if it weren't for the fact that my job paid for my iPad, I probably wouldn't have one yet either (not that I mind). I plan on buying one for myself when it gets Retina. Now if we could just get 300dpi computer monitors! (That don't cost multiple thousands of dollars)

Whenever I see a clipping of an older (90's (90's is older?!?!)) movie, I wonder how I wasn't distracted by its low quality. How quickly things change.

I know what you mean. My wife and I tried to watch Night Rider a while back. One episode had someone breaking into a tech firm in Silicon valley. She snuck through the halls in typical 80's fashion, complete with soundtrack, and sat at a computer. Then she pulled a 5 inch floppy out of her pocket as if it were high tech. I just couldn't help but laugh. And who could forget Kits "Radar" display with the PacMan-ish character plotting along.

I have $$ and gift cards stashed away from Christmas that is ear-marked for an iPad. I do not own a 1st gen. iPad but I do plan on purchasing one of the 2nd gen. iPads. I don't believe there will be a new iPad in September. Perhaps I am reading into Mr. Jobs' words to much but he said 2011 would be the year of the iPad 2. Putting out an iPad 3 in the fall would seem to make it the year of the iPad 2 and 3. I assume they will keep a yearly update schedule (or something similar) with the iPad like the rest of their portable products. I'm not planning on camping out to get an iPad 2 but I am hoping the local BB doesn't run out before I can get there.

I think the iPad 2 is awesome, but my first generation iPad works just fine, so there is no real need to upgrade (I cannot even believe those words came out of my mouth - somebody show this post to my husband, quickly. He'll be amazed). However, I do love the Facetime application and would use that a lot if I had the iPad 2.

I would actually like to upgrade my iMac this year and cannot justify a new iPad and iMac this year. So, unless Logos has a wonderful iPad contest and picks me as the winner, I won't be in the market for a new iPad in 2011.

Various rumor sites said the same thing about the iPod Touch camera, which never made it into iPod Touch 3rd gen (32/64GB) but into iPod Touch 4th gen (this past fall). So I don't anticipate them switching up the cycle too much. iPad in the spring, iPhone in the summer, iPod in the fall (before back-to-school). We'll see if they hold that pattern.

For what it's worth, you can pick up a 1st gen iPad cheap...I'm not sure we'll see significant speed improvements for text display/web browsing (basically what the Logos app does)...maybe for local search in the future. The main improvement of the new processor/graphics chip would be for gaming type applications, I would think. So I'm leaning toward picking up a 1st gen iPad for the $300-350 range, until they do a retina display on the next iteration of iPad.

I picked up an iPad 2 on the day it was released. If you teach at all, the absolute best and "must get" feature is that video out (mirror) now works with EVERY app, not just select apps like Keynote. What that means is that last week, I was teaching a college class, and rather than pre-designing slides in Keynote with Scripture, I could go to Bible software apps on my iPad and demonstrate issues in the text live.

Again, if you don't teach and already have a first gen iPad, you're probably fine to stay with what you have. But if you regularly use your iPad in teaching settings, this is a very worthwhile upgrade.

By the way, you don't have to get the HDMI adapter to mirror. I'm using the same VGA adapter I bought with my iPad last year, and it works flawlessly with my iPad 2 connected to a data projector.

I was going to purchase the iPad 2, but mint condition iPad 1's with cases were selling for $370 (32 GB), so I saved 45%. No flaws and I've been very happy with it! (this is my first one and I can't afford to be an "early-adopter" anymore)

I loved my original iPad (32GB AT&T) in its Apple case.

My iPad 2 in its Smart Cover just upped the ante.

It's not an essential upgrade by any stretch, but when I launched Logos on it for the first time this morning, I noticed the difference in speed. I also notice a clear difference in network speed on it, the lower weight and width (with the Smart Cover instead of the case, especially) all make it more comfortable to use.

Given the distance at which I normally hold the iPad, I'm not sure how much difference a Retina display will make, but I won't complain when an iPad shows up with one.

That said, I think that Ken Segall made a great point in his blog on March 29 (http://kensegall.com/blog/2011/03/the-mystery-of-iphone-5/): Apple now has a tight enough announcement calendar that it's very doubtful that there will be a fall iPad announcement or that the iPhone 5 announcement will be later than the WWDC. He could be wrong, but I think he makes the best point of any that I have read, and frankly trust him more than many of the so-called journalists who have been talking about the "delay" of the iPhone 5 announcement and the fall iPad 3 announcement.

I download a few of the CNET podcasts and they've always been pretty accurate on predictions. I can't see Apple introducing a new version until next year- besides the new display, there's the '4G' compatability (iPhone will likely be the first with this), and frankly- being an engineer, though a prototype may already be in the hands of a few choice engineers, a Fall timeframe allows too short a beta testing period and from a marketing standpoint, a lot of loyal customers would be quite angry. The CNET pundits call the iPad 2 the "iPad 1.5"- a "tweener" if you will- between version 1 and version 3.....

Jeff, the one area of question I have is that Verizon actually had an untouchable LTE iPad in their booth at CES in January. I really was expecting an LTE version of the iPad, and can't imagine it being a "bump" like the Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 was. Perhaps the iPhone 5 will be LTE, but that would be a tough approach: do they then have 3 versions or do they build one that can talk to all three networks? Or...?

I just got my iPad2 in the mail. The improved speed is very noticeable in Logos. Also, the form factor isn't much but it's enough to make reading a mroe enjoyable endeavor.
