What did you pick up from March Madness Round 1?

Anything under the radar we should know about? Any darkhorses you've had your eye on that lost in the first round?

I try and stay away from books in collections I fear I'll want to purchase in the near future. That being said, I still picked up both JPS OT commentaries to familiarize myself with them. Same with the Reading John volume from the Smyth & Helwys collection.

I also bought:

Dictionary of Christianity in America, Distinguishing Traits of Christian Character, SPCK Old Testament Introduction, and Regarding Karl Barth (Thought I'd start here on the arduous journey of understanding Mr. Barth)

*Edit* Not meaning to offend, but I'm not really looking to read what people didn't pick up. I suppose if its really insightful go ahead and post. I'll trust your discretion. Cool

I didn't select anything. Most of what was being offered I either didn't care for or already own. I did think about tossing in my pebble for a few things I already have in order to possibly ensure that some decent works made the cut, but I didn't. There were a couple of items that I thought about, but I had no burning desire for them. I did, however, note that Mark Goodacre's book on the synoptic problem made the cut. I had missed that since I was getting disappointed with the other offerings. I would recommend his work -- this is not to say that I endorse his position.

I would really have liked to see Whybray's Making of the Pentateuch go a bit farther. It's a good volume, but $50 is still more than I can allocate for it at the moment.

Am I missing something here? Every single one of these, except for the SPCK one, was 50% off during Christmas. Not buying at 50% off, and then buying at 30% off three months later, seems like an awful waste of [probably hard-earned] money to me... No wonder that thread some weeks ago showed me to have the lowest average payed/resource of everyone answering, while many others had payed like 4-5 times as much.

That's the reason I didn't buy one of the commentaries listed. I am still undecided whether I should invest e.g. into the IVPNTC set (have read good things about this set - even in D.A. Carson's book on NT commentaries they fare pretty well), and I am not yet ready paying lots of bucks for the more technical thick commentaries out there if I am not studying that book in depth (thus I have a paper version of Moo's NICNT Romans). But maybe I'll reconsider.

Regarding "under the radar": I think I would have bought "Heretics" by GK Chesterton but for the fact that I own it in paper and in electronic format, and Logos' functionalities do not play out in a text like this.

Well, just answering for me personally: I was not a Logos user on Christmas, didn't even know much about Logos at all. For the others at least I can imagine that you won't buy all the books you might want at a certain time at 50% off, but focus on best buys in a budget - and maybe now there is a little bit more money back. So it's not necessarily a waste of resources.

True - but at Christmas I spent the available money on higher priority items. The price I am willing to pay for an item factors in the urgency based on current and near-term projects, the funds available, children/grandchildren "emergencies" (read college tuition) and my mood (tightwad or spendthrift). Plus March Madness happens to overlay my birthday.[^]

in Round 1 of March Madness I picked up the JPS Commentary on Jonah, Go Out and Meet God: A Commentary on the Book of Exodus, The Practice of the Presence of God, and Writings of Saint Francis of Assisi. I'm considering getting about three or four other titles from Round 1. We'll see. . .

Whether they prove to meet your needs depends on what you need. If you are interested in a commentary that addresses the original language, it's not for you. I bought the print edition of the classic Caird commentary on Revelation since I've been working on the book for years and try to acquire anything of any worth on the book. As I noted, it doesn't deal with the original language and is somewhat cursory. It does seem nevertheless to be fairly competent though I don't agree with Caird any more than I agree with any other commentator on the book. The closest view of Revelation to my view is that of Augustine, but his City of God isn't really a commentary.

The section w/dates seem to be summaries of the various historical periods and vary in length. Some are very short, eg. the section on the Great Awakening is only a few paragraphs long, while the section on Christian Beginnings is 16 short paragraphs. The dictionary has no page numbers so it's hard to describe the article lengths. The various time periods do have a number of links to key figures and events that you can jump to.

As to the names you listed, there are articles on both Walther and Pieper, but I believe these are the only two that I could find in a quick search. The Pieper article is considerably shorter.
