I have the Nicene & Post-Nicene Fathers (First and 2nd series), which includes homiles/comments by Chrysosthym etc.

Can someone who has the 29-vol Ancient Christian Commentary tell me if there's a big overlap between it and the NPNF?

Thanks

ACC contains quotes (at the editiors choice) regarding the verses. There maybe some quotes from material you do not possess. I do not have NPNF but have read sections. NPNF are probably the sources that were selected to be used in ACC. Hope this helps.

    Hi Allen,

The difference is organization. ACCS is a commentary and is organized by pericope. As such if you are studying Rom 8.28 Logos version of ACCS will take you to that section of the commentary and provide you with what the editors feel are comments made by the Church Fathers. I have a collection of ECF and AF and using the cited by tool, can attempt to access content based upon a verse or pericope. (rom 8.28 yields 194 hits), but they are all tied to footnotes. ACCS goes beyond this by providing a quick way to have references easily provided by the commentary.

There will be overlap, but you may find the organizational benefits worth the cost.

I have both: NPNF is great if you want more context (e.g. read a complete, hour long homily, read the whole discourse , but I always start with ACCS because the editors do a great job of finding what is relevant across a variety of sources...

In short, if logos did an uber fantastic "topic" or "passage guide" search for a church fathers collection, it would look like ACCS.

If you have oodles of time and can read 5x-10x more then you would if you were using ACCS, then you should; it would result in a better, deeper understanding of the specific author.

    Thanks, guys.

That helps to clarify the difference. I can see the point of ACCS, but I'll probably buy other things for now.

    Appreciated.
