What I didn't tell everyone is that my XPS 600 developed a problem with the motherboard, and I bought this new one entirely, and I hate to admit this, on credit with Dell. I hate bills and I believe I should be debt free, but it was either have a computer or not and I chose to have one. So all envy should remember I am owing every month. [8o|] Also I paid right about $2,500 for this system. The good news is that five years ago, a top end comparable machine would be double that price.
There is always a faster machine, such as life. The post by Thomas Bourega with a score of 1797 shows that! [Y]

I see in PCGamer that your processor is preferred for gamers since it overclocks easily. Also your graphics card is really doing well, that's hauling! I too am a gamer but I have never been into overclocking as it kind of makes me nervous. Good job on your speed. [Y]

Thank you, I bought nearly every part second hand, as there's no way I could have afforded a PC like this otherwise! TBH I bought it with an annual Uni bursary, and if I had have discovered Logos then, I would have spent the money on it instead. But aw well!

If you look way back at the start of this thread - http://community.logos.com/forums/t/24555.aspx?PageIndex=1- you will see a link to the NovaBench benchmark utility - that is what is being discussed here.
If you download the utility at that link and run on your computer it will produce a set of benchmark numbers similar to what people are posting here.

Speed: 189 MB/sLogos runs extremely fast. Of course, I have two SSD's in a Raid 0 configuration. I built this computer almost 2 years ago specifically with the logos specs in mind. Put in the SSD's over christmas-and put my original velocitiraptors (10,000 RPM) also in a Raid 0 config and use it for storage (all my docs, music, pics, basically everything but the OS and logos).

Jems; I've wanted to do exactly what you have done with your hard drives. That is about as good as it can get for that part of your hardware. Ever since hard drives have been around, we have waited for them as being the slowest part of the computer. I thought that the SSD's would have come out years ago before they have. My system is a pair of 7200 rpm RAID 0 at 1.4 terabytes. The write speed is 162 MB/s. I have been thinking about after my warranty for this Dell is over, getting a couple SSD drives to boot from.
Did you overclock your CPU too? The speed is a bit high for the 940.

Yeah, I am quite impressed with the SSD's in Raid. While the read and write times are nice, what REALLY amps this system, are the seek times, less than 1 millisecond usually. Also, on larger files, the read-write times rocket. I think the threshold is 128k-
When I bench my HD with ATTO Disk Benchmark, I get these speeds transfering 128K at doubling lengths, beginning with .5K and ending at 8192 K, overlapped I/O
Read Writes are about the same (writes are a bit faster through 128 KB (transfer size) Reads are a bit faster starting at 2048), so I'll just post 1 number for each transfer size

When the total length of file is doubled to 256 kb, I break the 500 MB/s barrier at 64 Kb (transfer size).
As for my computer, I do have it OC'd. I have had it like this for probably a year and a half now. I think I need to get some new ram as I believe that is holding me back from OC'ing more and still being stable. BTW, I am on air, with my temps in the upper 20's to low 30's (cel) when it is cool, upper 30's when it is 70-80 (Fahrenheit) in my room.
If I were you and I 1. had the money and 2. wanted to build a desktop, I'd check out the OCZ RevoDrives- or the RevoDrive X2. They are PCI-e SSD's, the first is rated up to 540MB read, 490 MB write, the second is rated up to 740MB read, 690 MB write. If you get the larger X2's, they rate up to 1.4 GB read an write (of course, your spending a few thousand for a 1.4 GB). All in all however, I am very happy with my system.

Along those same lines I installed a single 40 GB SSD and installed WIndows 7 on it in a dual boot configuration with my existing system. Though I saw my boot time cut in half I didn't see much increase in overall performance and my Benchmark on it was only 12. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed. I wiped the drive and returned it. I am beginning to think that SSD's are over rated. Or perhaps it is just the particular model I chose to try out.

On the previous page at the bottom is my score, and my hardware got a 38. It's higher because I have a larger boot partition. To me, that's a senseless way of scoring. It should be entirely on speed I think as mine is just a 1.4 terabyte 7200 rpm drive in RAID 0. Not fast. My Windows 7 performance test gave my drive a 5.9. Kind of maddening when the cpu is 7.5, memory is 7.5, graphics 7.8, gaming graphics 7.8. The Win7 test grades on disk data transfer rate which should be the same for the Novabench. Size has nothing to do with speed.

That is interesting Larry. That would hold true with what I saw on the SSD I installed. It was only a 40 GB drive so the Novabench score was only 12. My WIndows index for the drive was 7.4 which would reflect the speed. I guess we should take the scores on this thread with a grain of salt. But I was still disappointed in overall performance improvements. Add to that the fact that my monitor chose to bite the dust the same day I installed the SSD and returning it was a no brainer. I can only afford so much hardware in a given month and I was not thrilled about the idea of going back to my old CRT. Also, Best Buy had an awesome sale on a 20" widescreen LCD monitor ($99). [:)]
Anyhow, thanks for the eye opener on the Novabench scores.

If my Win7 score for my hard drive were 7.4 then my total would be in the 7's. That's a great score for your HD and it's too bad you did not see much performance gain. Novabench also takes into consideration the amount of RAM you have, and that has nothing to do with speed of what you DO have. I'm not impressed with their scoring.

My computer is probably a mid range computer i was just expecting it to handle Logos a little better.
I'm not complaining, in fact i really like the program alot, and i know many could say "well you should see it on my computer". This really the first program that i've through at this laptop that has some slowdown or lag in it

Logos 4 is a resource bear. And you SHOULD see it run on my PC! [:)]
It's hard to quantify, but I think I noticed a nice performance bump when I increased my RAM to 8Gb. I can't tell, though, if your operating system is 64-bit or not: necessary to access any RAM you would add.

I was thinking that a RAM upgrade wouldn't hurt. I do run Windows 7 - 64 Bit. So I probably will bump it up when i raise the necessary funds.
That what's a blessing; I took a leap of faith that I would like the program so i jumped in with the silver base package and now that i really do like it I want to go ahead and jump up to a higher package. It just makes buying more complicated because i am heavily invested in another Bible program that i really like also, for its good selection of resources. Now just need the money to buy more books for both programs, and get RAM. LOL!
I had heard it was something of a bear too, but i guess you never really know until you put it to good use. Thanks for the Info though, One reason that i chose to get logos 4 was because of the forums, the videos, and the community and the ease of finding out info about the program

I am a member of a gaming forum that is considered to be the most elite of gaming forums, and the fights that happen there are terrible. Here at Logos, it's a breath of fresh air for me.

If I may make a suggestion to those who are thinking about buying hardware to making Logos run better-
Before you buy anything, check your computer.
1. Open up the resource monitor (control alt delete). If you have Vista or 7, click on the "performance" tab. Identify the two meters-CPU Usage and Memory
2. Now, open up Logos, and watch to see what happens to the meters- do they peg out?
3. Now do a search in Logos- not an easy one, but a search that puts logos through its paces. For instance, do a morphology search on the Hebrew article and the Hebrew vav (at the same time). Again, what happens to your two meters?
4. If the meters are pegging, or running high, then you should do better with getting that particular piece of software. (CPU or Memory). As far as the HD is concerned. The faster the seek time, the faster the read write time, the faster the I/O is, the better off you are, period.
Of course, this is all just my opinion-those of you with more building expereince than me, PLEASE chime in if I have said anything wrong. I wouldn't want anyone to waste money on hardware when they can use it to buy more books! [;)]

As others have said, it really is a problem with the Benchmarking software. That is why I gave the numbers from a program that can isolate and benchmark HD's at various transfer sizes and file sizes. My top speed is about 550MB/s, which is VERY fast.
The problem is, my HD is only 110 Gigs, so I automatically get marked down quite a bit for that. My windows score for my HD however, is a 7.9.
May I suggest you take a look at http://downloadsoftwareuniverse.com/download.php?view.4332 as a better benching software,as it gives you a full reading. It is what I got my full set of numbers in an above post from.

This is so variable, even with similar hardware and OS. Poor response in Notes is acknowledged by Logos but I have no problem selecting verses. There is a small lag when opening a tab in my Layout for the first time and this is common to my Desktop and Laptop.

If it had been large enough to hold Logos 4 and MS Office it might have been a different story since those are the apps that I use 90% of the time.

Okay. One final upgrade to my home desktop system. I found a Core 2 Quad Q8400 on eBay and obtained it for $110.00. Not bad since the retail price on them is $170.00. Anyhow it boosted my Novabench score considerably.

LOL- happens to all of us!
For me, it's not even the read-write time as much as its the seek time. That is where I see the most difference. I agree with you though, Definitely need a drive big enough to hold office and L4. Those are my two biggest software packages as well.
Next you want to go down that route-here is what I got, and am very happy with it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I am sure you know and messed with this, but just in case--- sometimes you have to load new drivers as well. Not sure why. I wonder if that was part of you problem, or that plus a SSD that didn't have a good Read/write speed.

I posted my score to show you all that not every user of Logos 4 has the newest and the best computers.
Some of its loyal long time users only can afford to buy "new outdated" net books runing windows xp home addition.
It might be a little slow, but it is still a lot better then my original CompuBiblia - Logos 2.0[;)]
The CompuBiblia in spanish with is grand total of 4 spanish bibles, is the only reason I bought a logos product. [Y]

George, this note book is my upgrade.[:D] Just bought it less then a year ago at the local Sam´s here in southern mexico.
It has worked fine for powepoint presentacions. [:)]
It does not weigh too much, is small. It fits in my older laptop carrying case (from my old hp that died), along with my spanish bible and songbook. [:D]

George, as you can see, my NEW Netbook got a score of 153 [Y], while my five year old Compac Presario Desk Top only got 151 [N]
And they work fine, they alow me time to warm up my coffee in the Micro while the program is loading, etc.[<:o)]

Your NVidia High-Performance GPU should be capable of a score around 150-160, similar to my ATI "middle class" video card. I can right click the Windows Desktop to switch between GPU's.

Lots of interesting scores. What can we take from this - other than Nova score envy?
Is there any agreement on what Nova score it takes to run Logos 4 effectively? Or what system requirements are needed? Any suggestions for someone looking to buy a new laptop?

I think any score in the 200s and up will serve. I had hoped that by getting a faster machine with 8 Gb of memory I would eliminate a problem which I have experienced with adding to notes files. I still, however, experience the greyed screen and the spinning pizza from time to time. I'm not sure what causes this, but it seems that having a more powerful machine does not cure it. I have a 12 yr old Gateway computer with a Pentium 2 processor and 750 Mb of memory which is admittedly somewhat slow in running L4, but which does manage to do so without too many problems.

If you're buying in a store get a machine with Windows Experience index at least 5.9, otherwise get a machine similar to those with a Novabench score at least 300 (Graphics component should be at least 30 and RAM at least 100, even for a laptop).

Yes it does. I'll have to do some side-by-side testing, but subjectively start-up, searching, and indexing are faster. I forgot to enable diagnostic logging before the indexer started so don't know how much time it took, but is was a lot faster than on the older machine.
It used all four threads at times while indexing, often running at 2.6 GHz turbo speed. Here's a shot of CPUs during indexing:

Having a Quad has definitely sped up indexing! There is NO comparison!
But I was surprised that after upgrading that I found the actual closing of Program Guides and collections to still be "quite slow."
I assume it is because Logos WPF "graphics" are memorizing everything?
