Data/Bandwidth Caps means Logos will have to provide a way of turning off auto-sync in Logos 4

Many ISP's including the two biggest, AT&T and Comcast, have announced they plan to cap data usage (AT&T began Monday, May 2). This means that we must be able to limit how often Logos 4 syncs so that all of our bandwidth is not eaten up in one sermon preparation session.

Despite what the naysayers have posted on this forum for that last two years, Logos should have provided it as an option to begin with.

Are you implying that setting "Automatic Updates" to "No" and "Use Internet" to "No" is insufficient?

With bandwidth caps 150 GB (or higher), unlikely for one sermon preparation session to eat all bandwidth (unless including lots of videos). Observation: downloading Portfolio Collection (8.05 GB) more than 18 times in one billing period would exceed bandwidth cap of 150 GB.

By the way, in some places Comcast implemented a bandwidth cap many months ago (account page had current billing period usage) so customers watching lots of high definition TV shows and movies over internet have opportunity to pay more for high speed access.

Logos 4 already has "Use Internet" program setting that can be changed from "Yes" to "No". With "Use Internet" set to No, can click arrows or use "sync now" command to sync information to Logos servers.

The latter is sufficient for turning off auto-syncing completely, but it would be nice if Logos provided some setting that would control the frequency (e.g., every X minutes or hours or whatever) and then we could forget about it, instead of having to turn "Use Internet" to "No" and then remember to click the Sync arrows to force a sync every so often. I view this kind of like Word's auto-save feature, which you can turn on and off, but if it's on you can also control how frequently it operates.

We don't anticipate that sync will bring you anywhere close to a U.S. ISP's monthly bandwidth cap.

Let's assume you type 60wpm for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week; at that rate, you will create about 10MB of data per month. Let's also assume that sync bloats this by 10x (say by wrapping it in XML) and that you sync it to 3 computers on the same network. Then let's double it for all the automatic stuff being synced, like layouts, previous searches, etc. That brings it to about 600MB per month for a fairly unrealistic scenario. Normal sync usage should be a tiny contributor to your monthly bandwidth limit.

Resources are typically much larger than the data you're creating. Because of this, Logos 4.2a and 4.3 introduce "resource patching", which can reduce the download size for a resource by up to 90%; this can save a lot of bandwidth.

And finally, don't forget that it's in our interest to keep everyone's bandwidth usage low. If we were hosting sync at Amazon S3, it would cost us $0.15/GB (http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#pricing), or about $37.50/mo for the full 250GB; this would get a little pricey when multiplied by thousands of customers.

This has been much appreciated. I was in strife with a 4 GB cap in 2009 and upgraded to 10 GB in 2010, which was later increased by my (Australian) ISP to 12 GB.

You can limit how often (and how much!) by having only one computer running L4 at a time. Also, prepare the bulk of your sermon offline and complete it online; then allow sync to another computer.
