Here we go again...

Next month, in the space of one week's time, Logos is dumping over $700 in PrePubs on me...and it feels like quite the avalanche. With a monthly EEC siphon already tapping my fiscal vein, this is a perfect storm. Some of these are resources I have had in PrePub for about 3 years, others just a year or a few months, but the confluence is counter-productive to say the least. The upshot is that I may end up passing on all of them. I've said it before when this has happened, but the blind, pot-shot randomness with which these take-it-or-leave-it PrePubs hit the street leaves much to be desired...and it often means I am forced to "leave it". Also, once these PrePubs get past me, as far as I'm concerned they get sucked into a black hole...gone, never to be retrieved.

1) Augsberg Commentary on the NT *15 Vol.* or 2) New Daily Study Bible: NT *17 Vol.* or 3) Eerdman's Biblical Resources Series *14 Vol.*

You can only pick one. If your choice is because you wouldn't be caught dead owning the other two, that's fine. I'm looking for reasons to choose just one of the three. I would appreciate plenty of thoughts, opinions, etc.

1) Augsberg Commentary on the NT *15 Vol.*

Reason: (from the Logos product page) "along with an account of that book’s influence in church history, such as the impact of Romans on Augustine, Wesley, and Barth, and Martin Luther’s appraisal of James." This makes the commentaries has a distinct and useful voice rather than being "just another commentary".

I feel your pain, I have had to drop a bunch of things, and may have to drop more, it would help if we had another pre-pub save on hold for awhile like last Oct. It allowed me to pick up a set just recently that otherwise I would have missed.

Sorry - I have no direct answer on these 3 works. I don't know them at all.

However, in general I look at if I think I'm never going to buy a given item, or just delay it. If delay, then whichever might increase the most is the one I wont delay, if possible.

Taken to extremes of course, it would mean I buy most everything in Pre-pub or Community, and I already do too much of that :-)

With two books by J. J. Collins and the translation of Gunkel's Schöpfung und Chaos, there isn't any competition, the Eerman's Biblical Resources Series take the palm hands down.

EDIT: I might note that I searched for Gunkel's work with little success when I finally found PDF copies of it. I at first thought of making a translation of it since at that time it had not yet been translated into English. When I began to look at the PDFs, however, I found that the OCR software use to convert the text for the PDFs didn't do anything like a good job with the fraktur type so that the first task would have been a text-critical reconstruction of the original German. Needless to say (though I'm obviously going to say it anyway), I was most pleased when Eerdman's came out with a long-overdue translation. Now I am overjoyed to be able to get it in Logos -- my print edition has become well-worn in only about 3 yrs.

Obviously you are interest in all three... and might eventually want to add them all to your library.

I would go with 3) Eerdman's Biblical Resources Series *14 Vol.* at the PrePub price of $199.95 (which is 54% off). If you look at the Logos website for that publisher and scan their books most of the single books have no discount and the bundles are at most 31% off. I think you can expect the price on this bundle to go up at least $100.

That and add George's excellent observations:

I think that I read some time ago that now that Logos 4 is fully released that they would turn their attention to the prepubs. At least for me, I haven't been able to keep up with the accelerated pace and have had to cancel some.

Different people work on books than develop the program. So, I think the picked up pace of Prepubs is just that they've hired more electronic text development staff.

Of these three choices I too would go for the Eerdman's bundle (too bad I can't afford any of these right now [:(]). I have the old Daily Study Bible series from an old base package and from what I've read this one is not enough of a revision (mostly updated language if I remember correctly) to warrant another purchase. Haven't had enough experience with the Ausburgh commentaries to like or dislike them.

At the MP seminar I attended some time ago, Logos gave a rather high number for the number of resources they expected to release per year. I think would should expect a rapid pace.

New Testament Commentary Survey, 6th ed. by Carson $14.99 in Logos

Commentaries for Biblical Expositors by Rosscup $19.99 in Logos

I believe they do a good job of evenly presenting what the viewpoints of the various commentaries and their individual authors, as well as the strengths and weaknesses as they see it. I usually check them all as well as the book review sections of my journals and journals online. Only so many dollars to spend on a sea of resources.

I'd go for another snapshot sale. A 2011 Master Collection 2 would contain a lot of duplicates and I'd rather round out my incomplete collections and fill other gaps before then. But I am open to any ideas Dan comes up with. Most of what I have was because of a sale.

Well, since this has gotten away from the OP (MY original post), I will say here on this point that I hope the next incarnation of a Master Collection is something that includes STUFF THAT ISN'T IN ANY OF THE BASE PACKAGES. I have Portfolio, and I specifically didn't get the Master Collection because about 70% of it was the Portfolio, which I have already paid for. I WON'T buy it again. Sure I would like some of the other stuff in the MC, but I will do without forever if they don't come up with a better option. The ball is in Logos's court. I've got a bunch of green and black paper which I'm waving back and forth...come and get it.

That said...I want to get this thread back to its original purpose...please indicate which of the three soon released items you would pick (see previous page).

You must be tired David/ This thread is about too many Pre-Pubs shipping at once. My last post was requesting a similar solution as we had last October. The 2011 Christmas Master Collection thread is over HERE [;)]

I have Portfolio, and I specifically didn't get the Master Collection because about 70% of it was the Portfolio, which I have already paid for.

I already had Portfolio Edition and discovered there were 1200 books in the Master Collection that were not duplicates and 810 that I already had. I also had non-package content like Spurgeon, Ironside, Calvin, and Rosscup. As far as I am concerned I did not pay twice for anything, I just paid $1.66 per volume for a fine addition to my library. I would go for another 1000 volumes of new material for less than $2 each.

Down to a week left and I still haven't made up my mind about which of these three resources I will be getting...although I have (sadly) determined that the CHEAPEST item with the MOST VOLUMES (choice #2) will not be getting the nod. [:(]

I am torn between MJ's and George's advice. I feel like I would get the MOST use out of the commentary, since I use those (occasionally) when doing Bible study and I am always doing Bible study. On the other hand, there are some titles in the Eerdmann's collection that I would really like to have (although there are some snoozers in it too, I must say), but I spend so much time in Bible study, I rarely have to time stop and read books about the Bible. I make time, but it seems I rarely get through an entire book, because I am drawn back to Bible study when I read them. The extra $40 for the collection is also reminding me of straws and camels right about now. [:S]

First, can anyone at Logos confirm if the Eerdman's collection will be available individually?

Second, if you haven't already offered a reason (or even if you have) why I should go one direction or the other, I would like your input.

Certainly not me, but you might consider that when they unbundle some of these collections the price of individual volumes skyrockets -- for two volumes of the collection you could have gotten the entire collection on pre-pub. Also, how many commentaries with variations on a theme do you need?

Just thought I would mention:
If you have picked up several different resources at different times via payment plans, you will notice you are paying a $5 administrative service fee for each payment processed. This can result in a large monthly charge hitting your card with no benefit to you. Next time you want a payment plan purchase, call a Sales Rep to place the order and they should be able to combine all your payment plans and process just one $5 charge a month. (Combining established payment plans requires human intervention from Logos.) You can also combine multiple purchases on one self-checkout and choose a payment plan at that time. Larger totals can be spread over longer periods. Sadly, Pre-Pubs can not be charged on a payment plan.

I would like to see the payment programs extended to 24 months for large balances. When 3 large purchases could total $6000~$8000 paying out in 12 months is difficult for most. The benefit of the larger library for the user is worth an extra $60 in administration fees. And if worse comes to worse, Logos could disable a license that is not being paid for. edit: That last sentence, now italicized, is only hypothetical. I don't know if they have ever done it.
