Get footnote without copying text

I've looked and couldn't find the answer so my apologies if this is elsewhere. How do I go about just getting the footnote information instead of having to copy a bunch of text then deleting it? I want to footnote something in a paper but it is not a quote and I don't want to quote from the source document, I just want to be able to footnote the text. My work around so far is to go to the information and take the bibliography entry and just rearrange into footnote format but that can be time consuming to say the least.

You could use a temporary Clipping's file

1. Once that you've added something from a resource to a clipping, hover your mouse over the right corner and click to view the bibliography info

2. There you can copy the bibliography info to the clipboard for pasting in your word processor.

3. Enter your text in your word processor.

4. Then select your word processor's method for inserting a Footnote.

5. Then paste what you copied in step 2 after the footnote number.

I'm not sure I understand precisely what you mean, but let us suppose I want to supply a footnote to some information I have included from Ahab Agonistes: The Rise and Fall of the Omri Dynasty. If I click on the "i" in the circle at the upper right-hand corner, I will see

I can then click on "copy" next to the "Citation" section and paste it into the footnote (being sure to add the page number).

I am not sure if I know what you are asking. Are you wanting to have a bibliographic entry for a footnote format in a particular style (i.e. Turabian, MLA, etc.)? I don't think that Logos offers this feature. When I was writing papers, I would have a template that I would use to rearrange the standard format into the footnote format. For what you want to do, you might need to look to a software solution such as endnote.

Some citation formats have different requirements in footnotes vs. works cited. From what I understand, George's solution provides the "works cited" or "bibliography" format, but not the "footnote" format.

In Turabian, for example, the first time a work is cited in the footnotes, the author is listed FIRST name first. If he is asking what I think, Logos will not be able to help him. The wikipedia link I provided earlier has a list of software which might help. I have a friend who used EndNote and liked it... I never got it because the "student" rate was $120.

I have had the same issue for papers I have been writing. It would be great if a solution could be created for this. Two ideas:

1. When you right click on highlighted text one of the options would be to copy the reference to the clipboard and not the selected text.

2. In the clippings section, when the bibliographic section is open (back of the notecard with the text) there would be two lines of text. The first, the bibliographic entry and the second a footnote entry. Logos already has the information formatted correctly if you were to past that text into a word format.

My current workaround is to paste the selected text into a word document, copy the reference, undo my paste of the text (word doesn't' always handle the footnote information correctly on its own), and then paste the footnote information into the footnote.

Good comments all, and I had no idea about the clippings function so learned something there. To clarify, I want to footnote (Turabian style) something from a source without actually quoting it. I wanted to know if Logos had the ability to just get something in footnote style only as it is now I get the Bibliography format. As someone pointed out, in Turabian that is another version of the same animal (author's name turned around, etc.).

AA7163 hit it on his number one solution, having Logos able to just give me a Turabian style footnote for a highlighted text. What I do now is after the section I want the footnote attached to I just copy a section from that document, paste it in then delete all the text leaving the footnote behind. Then I go to the footnote and rearrange the Bibliography style to fit the footnote style required in Turabian.

Does that clarify my question?

Does logos not format the footnote correctly for Turabian? I know it has some quirks with some of the formats I have used. (never used Turabian) If you didn't know this...If you click on the "i" icon on the top right of any book and change the format of the footnote from APA to Turabian, your copy of the text should also be in Turabian and correctly formatted with the page numbers and everything.

We still need a fix so we dont' have to copy paste and delete like we and I'm sure others are doing.

I think that you are both asking for something that would be impossible to do. I must preface my comments by saying that I am no expert in writing styles, and that I am most familiar with Turabian. The problem here is that there are several ways for the Bibliographic information to be displayed. The "correct" way depends upon when and where the information is going. For example, the FIRST time a source is cited the author's FIRST name is FIRST. This is not true the Second time, when it is just the author's Last name & Page number... UNLESS more than one author is cited with the same last name OR the author has several works cited in the paper. Each of these situations brings up a contextual decision that the writer/editor of the paper must be aware.

To top it off, there are always variations, even within a particular style. For example, Do you "Underline" the title of the book or "Italicize" it? Where I went to school, it was expected that the title would be Italicized. However, a reference cite I use for Turabian has the titles underlined and not italicized.

Alabama...what I am asking for is possible because logos already has the information. I realize the second time you insert a reference, you would need to delete information, to leave only the authors name and the page number. Generally the lack of page number and periods instead of commons (as well as order of authors names) is the difference between a footnote and a bibliography. When text is highlighted, copied and pasted into a document, logos places a footnote into the document which is formatted correctly. If it was the second time I inserted a reference to the same work I would need to adjust the information which I am alright with. I was asking to have that information (the one in the footnote) available within logos alongside the bibliographic information which is already available. I think since logos already has the bibliographic information formatted correctly this would be an easy addition to the software.

Already familiar with the Bibliographic citation, I want it to do my footnotes as footnotes (switch author name around, use commas instead of periods, etc.), not bibliography. It would be nice if Logos put that as an option along with Turabian, MLA, etc. I love the Bibliography function through Zotero and certainly appreciate the other time saving tools Logos has, but the footnoting seems like a simple solution (for us non-software writing types!).

As I'm looking through it, Logos could just add in the Program Settings function the ability to format footnotes per the style desired. It has that for citations but not footnotes.
