My computer came with a utility, NVIDIA Control Panel, that lets me select programs to use the GPU on the card. I did that with Logos. There is an auto-select option but I did not rely on that.

There is also a GPU activity icon I can load into the system tray. When I run Logos it tells me it is using the GPU.

So, I don't know about auto-detect, but imagine you'd have access to the same utility I have and be able to force your computer to use the GPU for Logos 4.

Yes, indeed. It is finally what I would have liked from the beginning.

I'm sorry I don't know the battery specs. I bought whatever the low-end battery Dell offered on this computer. I don't use it extensively on battery but when I have I have used it for as much as two hours without exhausting the battery. I think I could get close to four hours with it.

Mark, I have a GPU-video card and NVIDIA Control panel (the latest, just updated), but I don't see the way to select which programs use the GPU and which programs ARE using the GPU. Can you elaborate a little how I do this? Thanks!

Completely without doing any testing at all, I'd have never have categorized Logos as a graphics intensive application.... at least by comparison with chip melting screamers like 3d immersive gaming environments (applications). I find it difficult to believe that any amount of graphics horsepower would significantly improve Logos performance when the bottlenecks seem to be centered around CPU clock speed, system RAM (vs Graphics RAM), and HD I/O speed.

On older systems (over 4 years old) a mid-performing modern Video card does help WPF rendering speed for e.g. full screen Reading (F11 key), or heavily populated menus or when switching panels. The latest laptops (1-2 years) have much improved integrated graphics but often come with a discrete video card for gaming. The biggest problem I experience is the graphics switching that occurs when I switch between battery and mains power as it doesn't always go smoothly and there isn't any noticeable impact for L4! It does help battery life, though ...

Basically, WPF uses DirectX, which can derive great benefit from a GPU, and doing these calculations on a computers CPU will bog it down. It you look around on the forums from the first half of 2010 when Logos came out, you[ll see people with performance problems related to underpowered graphics cards.

Is it also possible you don't have on-board graphics? Seems unlikely, but either way you can set the card to be used for Logos 4.
