Thomas Nelson

Rick Warren tweeted the following about an hour ago:

"You heard it here 1st: Zondervan/HarperCollins is buying Thomas Nelson publishers."

It will be interesting to see what impact this has, if any, on books published by Logos given their historically close relations (dare I say "partnership") with Thomas Nelson and what I would describe as a "semi-cooperative" one with Zondervan, at least from a number and type of books published in Logos format. Time will tell.

I don't get much into "publishing gossip" (i.e. the latest news & behind-the-scenes info, etc.), but from the little I know, I think this is bad news...i.e. this was a "corporate business decision" and not a "purpose-driven" one. Ironic that the news broke through what's-his-name.

I wish the headlines had read "Nelson buys Zondervan/Harper Collins." Nelson has been fabulous over the years in providing quality content at bargain prices. I like the Zondervan Bible Reference Bundles 1 & 2 but they are considerably more expensive than Nelson resources. If Z/H-C/N works it right, they will bring a lot of new titles to Logos.

This cannot possibly be good.

I really wish it was the way around.

The way Zondervan has been pricing books available in Logos does not fill me with hope and will know what happens when a company eleiminates the competition and acquires a quasi-monopoly.

One of the posts that I read about the purchase stated that it was Nelson's lead in e-books that made it of interest.

Nelson had changed ownership a couple of times already recently. Michael Hyatt was no longer CEO.

I was especially interested in the fact that the 2 largest Bible publishers are now under the same ownership with NIV and NKJV. I expect less overlap in their generic Bible offerings.

Tyndale (NLT) and Crossway (ESV) are single translation publishers.

Holman will be the only other major Bible publisher with more than their single translation (HCSB).

What can and hopefully will happen is that new, smaller and more focused publishers arise. Logos is already a significant publisher in certain areas. This may also drive more people into self publishing maybe even using Logos personal books.

I think tremendous changes are taking place in the publishing industry that will impact the way that we purchase books and the way that books are distributed. Since print book sales are being eclipsed by electronic sales, it is a whole new ballgame. Authors can self publish their books very easily now and cut their own deals without having to go through publishers. Interesting times ahead for companies like Logos.

Very informative...I didn't even realize Baker, Bethany House and Revell were owned by the same company. So in many ways we've had three major publishing entities for awhile...Zondervan, Thomas Nelson and Baker. My concern is some of the issues we've had in getting resources on mobile devices (i.e. NIV) will become more prevalent with the purchase.

This is not a good sign. In 2006 Nelson was worth $473 million and today it is worth $200 million. I realize that the economy tanked and book publishers are scrambling to stay in business, but wow.
