Textual criticism books by the editors of UBS4

Given the overwhelming amount of available literature on Logos I am a little surprised not to see Metzgers and Alands introductions to textual criticism of the new testament. There are of course several good books available already, but I would very much like to see those two as well.

The Aland book is especially curious as to why not in Logos. I eventually bought the hardcopy, but the quality is excellent and the discussion in-depth with manuscript illustrations. Kurt had no patience for the majority text!

The updated Metzger book apparently is much more readable and also should be in most folks libraries, if they do much greek work.

The other one I'd think would have been included in Logos is Westcott's book on the WH development. As with many older volumes, you can download it, but it's often referenced, especially in regard to the 'Western' text.

The updated Metzger book apparently is much more readable and also should be in most folks libraries, if they do much greek work.

I read Metzgers book a while ago, and though I enjoy reading his works I am by no means convinced by his –and Alands– pro-Alexandrian views. I find it a little ironic how little acceptance there to be found for disagreeing with them, given the fact that their work has become the new Textus Receptus.

I'm not sure George will kill me for this or interlinears. But I suspect the Alexandrian will eventually be seen as simply a function of humidity levels (survival by dryness). If and when the researchers eventually upscale their analytical tools, I suspect they'll find the eastern manuscripts to be the better path for tracking backwards.

You may just be teasing George but I truly believe what you suggest could actually be the case. A discriminating scholar should not take dogmatic stands on either side of the debate without a little patience. Right, Mr Aland?

Alexandria was the Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Duke, Claremont Graduate University of the ancient world all rolled into one. In other words, it was the intellectual center of the ancient world. While humidididity [I'll say it for you — sic!] undoubtedly played a part in the preservation of the Alexandrian documentary views, it is clear that they are superior to others. In Alexandria where education exceeded that of other parts of the ancient world the scribes were better qualified to read and pass on the original tradition. Literacy was not as extensive in the ancient world as it is today. In many cases the copying of manuscripts was delegated to anyone in the local church who may have been barely literate which put him head and shoulders above the level of others in the local congregations, and this resulted in some undesirable consequences. The Alexandrian manuscript tradition in indeed superior to those of other areas of the Church at the time.
