EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE EXCLUSIVELY FOR LOGOS FOR MAC

My issue is the following:

I have a 6 gb of Ram in my Mac but I wasn't happy with the way Logos worked because there was no enough memory to allow me to read all my Passage guides (I have an extensive library) or my commentaries and greek dictionaries.

If I remember correctly parts of of it were missing or fragmented. So, I took logos out and gave the computer to my wife. I then went on to purchase a brand new PC (8 gb of ram and 1 T of hard drive) and of course I ditched the Mac.

My pc didn't give me a problem and I was quite happy with it until my wife told me she hates Mac (because she is so used to use a pc) and wants me to switch back. :-(

The question I have is, should I purchase an external hardrive from Costco (500 gb) and install my Logos for Mac in this drive?

My other question would be to install logos in an external harddrive through windows (I alo have Parallels 6)

Would this be more feasible? Any advice would be appreciated.

Joseph - First, welcome to the forums!

It might help to know more about your Mac. After reading your post, I am confused about your issue. What model is it? How big is the HD? How much space in on the HD? 6 GB of ram should be enough to "read a passage guide". Can you explain what you were having troubles with?

To make sure we are on the same page, here are some of my explanations about computers...

Hard Drive Space: is how much data (programs, documents, books, music, video, etc) your computer can store. It is important to have plenty of space available. If you put too much on your Hard Drive, it will slow down like the Mall Parking Lot on Black Friday.

CPU: Your processor is how fast your computer can go. Having a slow processor is like getting behind grandma on the interstate.

Memory: Also called Ram, is how much data your computer can think about at one time. To continue with the car analogy, having insufficient memory is like trying to drive through a major city without a guide. Nashville is a good example... several interstates & highways all intersect like spaghetti (for fun, screen shot below). There are times where you have to know to make a right; then quick left, then right again. [Do I need to get over 3 lanes, or just 2?]

I have, of course, over simplified things a bit. Any one of the three can slow your computer down. RAM also has a speed component, but in general I think they are good explanations.

you do know you can install more RAM into your Mac, right? Putting Logos on an external hard drive won't solve any problems, and I doubt you have 500Gb of resources. What's the real issue? How do you know it didn't have enough memory, and by memory are we talking RAM or HD space?

I have a MacPro with 500 gb of hardrive memory. Logos for Mac never worked well in this computer. The only things I have installed is Parallels 6, Microsoft Office for Mac and a couple of minor programs. I'm thinking of taking Parallel out and try it out this way...

I have similar set of software on my MacBookPro, you might want to check your Parallels 6.0 settings, such as the amount of RAM you allocate to a VM in Parallels (you need enough resources for OS X to run).

I have move to Parallels 7.0, so I am unable to show you 6.0 screen shoots. If you can provide other information like what version of Windows you running, and screenshoots on parallels configuration on RAM, HDD, Graphics ... Many of us with similar configurations can help ...

Running Logos for Mac is OK for standard reports and basic usage. However, there are some issues that I believe logos is working on, Logos 4 for Windows is more complete. I use both L4M and L4W.

Just to verify my understanding of what you said: You have a MacPro, with a 500 GB Hard Drive, 6 GB of Ram, with 1) Logos 4 2) Parallels, 3) Office, 4) and a few "Minor" programs. You said that you have "an extensive" library. How extensive? Do you know how many GB it takes up? It sounds like your HD is practically empty, but you are wanting to run to Costco to buy a new Hard Drive. If you think you have "not enough memory" to "read all of your passage guides," why are you not trying to upgrade your RAM? I guess I am not understanding your problem. I have a MacBook Pro with 8GB of Ram, 250 GB HD, but more programs than you suggest you have, but is running fine.

Perhaps you can explain your problem a bit more. I don't understand what you mean by "read [your] passage guides." Do you have much experience with Logos? Are you new to Mac? Do you know which version of Logos you are running?

If your computer becomes a paper weight to you, I would love to have it. [:)]

Currently Logos 4 on Mac and PC is a 32 bit application, which cannot use more than 2 GB Ram. Logos development is working on a 64 bit Mac version; personally have no idea when for public release. Caveat: Logos 4 Mac performance using 64 bit Mac OS X kernel with 2 GB of Ram can be awful (experienced recently while checking a new Mac Mini before setup for a customer). By the way, new Mac models with OS X Lion lack installation media; an external disk can be used to copy OS X Lion configuration before running initial setup.

Please elaborate about not working well; three Logos 4 Mac menus do not follow historic Mac conventions: File, Guides, and Layouts - recommend quick click to display menu (may take seconds to display), then can right OR left click on menu items. Logos 4 is resource intensive on Mac & PC – benefits from fast processor, graphics, and disk along with adequate memory (i.e. newer hardware since Logos 4 being designed for use over 5 to 8 years).

Looking at MacWorld lab test results => http://www.macworld.com/article/159862/2011/05/bto2011imacs.html noticed Mac Pro is faster for applications that can effectively use many processor cores. Currently Logos 4 Mac can effectively utilize one CPU core (so 27" iMac with 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 is a better choice for running Logos 4 Mac compared to a Mac Pro).

The question I have is, should I purchase an external hardrive from Costco (500 gb) and install my Logos for Mac in this drive?

Mac has option to boot from external drives so one option is installing Mac OS X with Logos 4 Mac on an external drive. Also, thread => Install on SSD has similar discussion. Dragging Logos 4 Mac application to a folder on an external drive is easy; setting up your Logos 4 folder on an external drive, which is not the Mac boot volume, requires bit more effort.

Go to preferences and turn off internet, that helps quite a bit.

Go to Wiki and look at at sped tips etc., this will help.

How do you know you don't have enough memory? You should use quantitative tools like Activity Monitor (System Memory & CPU usage) to determine usage of system resources.
Having more memory in the Mac won't hurt of course, but you should confirm that the issue is (solely) lack of memory.
Logos 4 Mac is no speed demon no matter how much resources you throw at it. In fact it cannot even use properly all the resources in a modern Mac.
Using Parallels to run Logos 4 Windows, especially if you have 6 GB RAM, is not going to be the best solution.
People have achieved better performance on the Mac by putting Logos 4 on an internal SSD drive. Do a search on the forum for postings from me about that.

Understand comfort zone: personally, my wife had a Mac, I switched her to Windows for awhile, then switched back to a Mac years ago because Mac was easier to use consistently.

Wiki has Logos 4 Mac => Need Logos 4 PC feature? section includes Boot Camp; could partition Mac to run Windows natively (needs a Windows license).

Apple has Mac OS X Applications and Utilities plus hundreds of How-To Tutorials. Apple Support includes Mac 101, Switch 101 and Keyboard shortcuts. For OS X Lion, Apple Support includes Recovery (with how to install on a new drive)

Observation: in OS X Lion, Apple finally allows a window to be resized by dragging any edge (instead of lower right corner convention that dates back to original Mac).

By the way, if use Read Aloud in Logos 4, Mac includes 24+ voices while Microsoft Windows 7 has one (can purchase more SAPI 5 voices from other vendors). Thankful Logos 4 is easy to switch platforms (minimal differences); Logos 4.5 Beta includes many feature parity improvements on Mac.

A Trabant was a "usable" car in that it got you from A to B. But once the Berlin wall went down no one for a second would have said that a Trabant was usable or in the same league as a BMW, or even a Volkswagen.

Running Logos 4 Mac off a USB 2.0 external HDD is not a 'usable' option I would wish on anybody — in preference to running it on an internal HDD with a decent data interface.

Only just bearable = Trabant = External HDD with USB 2.0
Good = Volkswagen = Internal HDD with SATA 2.0 or 3.0 interface
Better = BMW = Internal SSD drive with SATA 3.0 interface
Best = Mercedes = Macbook Air with external Thunderbolt connected SSD drive (alas not even available yet!)

Thank you for your input. I solved the problem by simply turning my Mac into Windows using bootcamp. I upped my computer's ram to 8 gb for $45.00 (2x4GB) and gave Windows 320gb hardrive memory after I removed every program that I don't need from Mac.

Mac has now 180 while windows has 320... [:)]

I have purchased a LaCie 1 TB external drive and installed Logos on that so I can 'travel' with Logos and not burn limited drive space on the Mac. Problem: Logos installs fine on the external drive, but when I open it on my Air, no files, no history, and my library is nowhere to be found.

1; Can I sync and use this external HD in the above manner?

2: How do I do that? (step by step)

3; Or am I forced to buy a more expensive Mac with internal memory?

Suggest creating a new thread in the Logos 7 or Logos 6 that matches Logos version being used. Also elaborate how Logos was installed on external drive. Note: location of application bundle has no effect on where application support files are created.

Personally have a MacBook Air (MBA) that does not have enough internal space on Solid State Disk (SSD) for my library so am using a fast USB 3 drive (128 GB) for resource file storage, which is symbolically linked into my Logos installation. Internal SSD uses 17.7 GB for my Logos application files while USB drive has 70.7 GB of resource files. Using internal SSD for most of my Logos files avoids known USB (external drive) and SD issues when writing to application database files.

Caveat: carrying around MBA with external USB provides opportunity for USB drive to be bumped so am learning to handle carefully. Thankful for USB still working after MBA quick exit from car to ground a couple times, including one where USB drive cover split up into several pieces.

Fast USB 3 drive has over 120 MB/second read that is a bit faster than UHS SD and microSD cards with up to 95 MB/second read.

This is true. But, as this whole thread is predicated on doing something with Logos we do not support, and it wasn't mentioned, I feel the need to remind everyone that we do not support installing Logos on removable media (external hard drives or SD cards) on OS X/macOS or Windows. If you call support with problems using the program we will likely end up advising installing to a supported location.
