Libronix Platform on Mac

Newbie here...I searched for old threads but couldn't turn up anything. Here's my question. Can you actually install the Libronix platform on a Mac OS without L4? I am looking to run Translator's Workplace (SIL) on my MBA. Many thanks in advance.

The Libronix version for the Mac OS is Logos for Mac 1.2.1 which was severely lacking in capability. Development of that version ceased with the release of L4. Not familiar with the resource in question, so cannot give any more specific information.

Hello Wayne, welcome to the forums.

I'm not sure about anything regarding Translator's Workplace (which seems to be a completely different software) and its integration with Libronix=Logos 3. You may utilize nearly all Libronix resources under Logos 4, which is available for the Mac. If you need Libronix-specifics, you will need to run it under Windows - however, some people seem to do this on a parallel install or a virtual system on their Mac.

As Jack has already noted, there was work on a MAC version of L3 which never achieved parity with the Windows version. I think you might be able to run L3 on a MAC using a (what's it called?) similator program. I confess that I have sincere sorrow for our MAC friends who are stuck in that platform. Another point to note, I remember Logos for Mac 1.2.1 does not run on OS X Lion.

Yes, looking at SIL Fieldworks web site => http://fieldworks.sil.org/te/ noticed Translation Editor has Libronix link. Likewise noticed SIL Fieldworks requires Microsoft's .NET 3.5 framework SP1, which is the same as Logos 4 on Windows. Note: Libronix 3.0g and Logos 4 can peacefully coexist in Windows 7.

Wiki has Logos 4 Mac => Need Logos 4 PC feature? that includes virtualization and Boot Camp options. Apple support has Boot Camp article for installing Windows 7 on a MacBook Air => http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410

Virtualization allows clipboard sharing between Mac OS X and Windows. Caveat: if MacBook Air has 2 GB RAM, then suggest using Boot Camp so can choose to boot MacBook Air using Mac OS X or Windows because 2 GB RAM is not enough to run Mac OS X and Windows 7 at the same time with decent performance. Since memory for Windows 7 use will be 4 GB or less, recommend installing 32 bit Windows 7. If use a virtual machine, could set Windows 7 virtual machine to 1.75 GB of RAM to essentially split RAM between Mac OS X and Windows 7 (virtual machine and virtual machine manager).

Logos support has older Libronix 3 articles for Windows => http://www.logos.com/L3/support/windows including => Libronix and Internet Explorer 9 and => Download the Latest Version (3.0g) Logos has Logos 3/Libronix forum to discuss Libronix 3 specific issues.

Libronix 3 uses Internet Explorer display engine to render items on screen, which needs a patch to use older javascript in Internet Explorer 9.

Note: the initial Libronix port for Mac OS X, Logos for Mac v 1, used Safari 4 display code. When Apple shipped Safari 5, Logos for Mac v 1.2.2 essentially became an e-Book reader so product page was removed from Logos.com web site.

There are two applications that create a virtual machine on the Mac OS: Parallels http://www.parallels.com/ and Fusion by VMWare http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html You will also need a copy of MS Windows.

Came to my senses in 1984 when I purchased one of the very first Macs. Must use Winders for work, and I sometimes use it for Logos 4. Winders is an ok operating system which is designed to give the operator a better understanding of James 1:2–8. However, I must admit that sometimes it is difficult to "Count it all joy" [:D]

How do you plan to run the Translator's Workplace on your MBA? The website has a Windows and Linux install of Translator's Workplace. Will this run under emulation with something like Wine, or did you plan to run a virtual machine (Windows or Linux OS)?

Third virtual machine manager option is free; Oracle's VirtualBox => https://www.virtualbox.org/ that has 4.0.16 maintenance release on 11 Jan 2012.

Caveat: valid Microsoft Windows license for virtual use or Boot Camp is not offered by Apple. Microsoft licenses some versions of Windows for virtual use. Hence, may be cheaper to buy a Windows 7 license for Boot Camp use (for use with Libronix 3, Logos 4, SIL Fieldworks, ...)

Looking at Linux packages => http://linux.lsdev.sil.org/wiki/index.php/FieldWorks_Testing_Instructions noticed mono, which would be consistent with .Net 3.5 Framework SP1 requirement. Likewise noticed WINE not mentioned in setup instructions.

Also noted SIL Linux release is a bit behind Windows development (7.0.6 Beta for Linux vis 7.1.1 Beta on Windows).
