Opening Note Files... very awkward and time consuming??

can any one please tell me how to open Note Files quickly? ( if this is possible?)

have I missed something simple, maybe I must have done? please tell me if I have..

I spend ages clicking to "file", then scrolling through my list of about 200+notes to find a note file before waiting for it to open. Of course I can prioritse the search a bit through the search diaologue box, but it still takes ages.And this long process must be repeated in order to open each note. As the note files become less efficient if very large, I use a lot of smaller ones...

If this really is the only way of opening notes, then :

Ideally, could we have

(i) the File/Notes box remaining open after a file has been opened.

(ii) a larger resizeable box for the index of note files,

(ii) a dockable Note file index window, like the library or favourites windows?

When you click "File" there's an input box at the top, to the right of the word "Open". If your system works like mine, the cursor will already be there, blinking, as if waiting for input. If you know the name, or part of the name of the note file you're looking for, just start typing. The list will narrow with each letter you type. When you see the one you want, click it, and it will open.

Try this a few times and let us know, if this meets your need.

Are we talking about the same search dialogue box? If so, something's wrong. This should be instantaneous. It should not take "ages" Note that you should type the name of the file. The search box in the "Files" menu does not search the note file contents, only the note file names. It also searches the file type (note, visual filters, passage list, etc.), but searches can't be mixed. That is you can't search by typing notes followed by zephaniah. In the case of a known file name (regardless of type), type the most unique part of the name. Another thing that doesn't work is typing in two parts of a name that are not next to each other, in the same order in the file name. For example, If I have a note file named Studies in Zephaniah, if I type studies and then zephaniah, the results will be blank. I would need to type literally studies in zephaniah, or type zephaniah (assumes that "studies" less rare) to narrow down my list to what I'm looking for.

hi Guys, thanks for your help.

My system is Windows home 7 [64 bit] [8GB Ram] [Intel(R) Core i7 CPU Q740@1.73GHz

Below are two screen shots - [1st Screen Shot] my favourites menu ( which I use in a tree structure to keep note files and books under my preferred indexed headings- and the Library menu. Both of these windows remain open after a note file/book has been opened.

whereas [ 2nd Screenshot] the note file window is small and closes after a note file resource has been opened. . Yes I can prioritise the search by tying into the "open" box, but all this takes time, which is on top of the 2 seconds necessary to wait to get to this point after clicking to open the file button. This of click wait 2 secs, type, search, open... is necessary for every note file, whereas in the favourites/library menus the index remains scrollabel in full and open all the time.

When I now create note files I usually put them in my favourites menu, to avoid the above route etc, but perhaps this should not be necessary, and I still have loads of notes I have not manually transferred yet.

Are there any other work arounds? Does any one else find a discrepancy between the NOTES opening boxes and the favourites and Library opening boxes?

or am I mistaken....?

You obviously have a very different note taking strategy than I do. You appear to have several note files on John (e.g.), where I would have just one note file on all of John. In other words, I don't have nearly as many files to deal with (though my files are bigger). Thus, I haven't needed another strategy than what I mentioned above.I rarely need to have more than one or two note files open at a time.

Perhaps someone else who has a note strategy similar to yours can give you some advice.

Do not believe that a few larger note files would be less efficient than the process you are describing.

Hi Michael,

You could download and use my program tool L4-Bibliograph2 to have it copy all your documents or just Note title (it creates hyperlinks to each title) in a Word docx file.

Below is my L4-Bibliography2 program (click on pic to enlarge)
Notice the button at the bottom with an arrow, click this button

The window below will open, click on Notes on the right
Then click on the Build Docx button & the program will generate a Docx file
with your Notes sorted alphabetically with hyperlinks to each note title

Below is my Microsoft Word docx file (click on it to enlarge it)

Then you could build a PB with your list. From the PB you can click to open a Note to open it.

The Logos 4 note files do slow down when they become very large(?) and the layout of Logos 4 note files denies some of the power of Libronix note files if note files are used in reverse as editable documents in their own right, regardless of being linked to other resources?

if a note flle is very ( very ) large, then it slows down in responsiveness?!. A forum user suggested tackling this by using an empty note file to establish notes ( once the file had become so large its responsiveness was hampered) and then dragging the finished note into the large file. I use this system now.

However there comes a point when the current logos 4 note files are just too large to be usable and editable in their own right. Logos note files have huge potential for being extremely powerful tools, but Logos 4 still falls behind the Libronix note files in this regard. Logos 4 note files contain a series of note heading and note contents, which can be displayed either in compact view ( note headings only) or Full view ( all note files open) . In full view a very large note file with substiantial contents in each note quickly becomes unwiedly IN ITS OWN RIGHT, it takes too much scrolling and flipping from full to compact view if any one note file is to be used as an ongoing editable compendium of notes and text. By contrast the contents of a note in a Libronix note file opened up in a viewing window on the right hand side, leaving the list of note headings viewable on the left. The Logos 4 note file does not do this. A note opens up its text BELOW the note heading. preventing most of the other note headings from being viewed, without returning to compact view... awkward!

Personal Books are not a replacement for Note files. The note files can be edited in an ongoing manner. A Note file has to be compiled etc. Although compilation can be reduced to a short period of time, any amount of time is an unnecessary hindrance to someone seeking to constantly edit the contents of note files. Similarly printing a note file into Word or anothe program is a fantasitc feature, but the time required inhibits the ongoing editing feature which makes note files a powerful resource to the serious student. It is such a shame that note files in Logos 4 are not as effective as Libronix in this regard.

There are two ways of using a Logos 4 note file. Firstly as a store of notes highlighted to the text of books and bibles etc. As one reads a passage of scripture where one has formerly attached a note file, then the contents of that note can be accessed by clicking the link in the book or bible. Once opened this way, then the text can be edited etc. and one returns to the book or bible etc. The second way of engaging with a Logos 4 note file is hugely powerful for someone who wants to make Logos 4 the basis of all their notes for Phd, church, diary, daily readings, linguistic studies etc ( and a hundred other things... Logos 4 is fantastically flexible and powerful!!!!) IF ONE CAN USE the note files in this second way aswell, using the note file in its own right as a document of editable text, with headings which can be clicked on to open up text. I can have essays and whole book contents in a single note, many hundreds of these in a note file of a certain title on a certain topic. The advantage of using Logos 4 note files to store this text is (i) instant hotlinks to scripture verses and (ii) searchability by logos 4, and (iii) editability - all under the same roof (iv) and speed. I could work fast and creatively with Libronix note files, but Logos 4 files are more limited! what a shame!!

Can we please have Logos 4 note files with an alternative display option - so that all of the note headings remain visible one under another on the left hand side of the note file, while the contents of a note open up in the right hand side?

I can see the advantages of the current set up, so lets not do away with that, but simply add an alternative display option, ( the display style of Libronix note files)

Please consider doing this Logos!! . It is the instant editability which makes note files unique and irreplaceble by personal books for those who want to make Logos 4 their prime serious study and documenting tool and store.

I have hundreds of Logos 4 note files, and most of them are very very large, and I have only just begun!

my point about the Notes feature is two fold:

(i) why has the format and power usefulness declined in Logos 4 from Libronix?

the Libronix notes open up on the right hand side of the screen, leaving a list of the note headings on the left, rather like a book resource.

In Logos 4 this has been changed to the contents of a note file opening up below each note heading, once in "full" mode the usefulness of it as a resource is lessened to the sticky note feature you describe. Why reduce it to this?

(ii) Libronix notes are a hugely powerful asset, as a resource in their own right, constantly instantly editable, ( their irresplaceable by personal books) they are also scrollable by note headings like a book resource. Anyone who has not used Note files in this way, ask me to demonstrate this feature. Its use hugely adds to Libronix. But why has this not been continued in Logos 4? Can the Note files featreu be ammended to maintain the Libronix capactiy?

Seriously, is Logos aware of what logos 4 is missing, by not not living up to the Libronix note files?

I think I understand what you're saying. Some of the features of Libronix notes are not available in Logos4. You miss some of those features - in fact at least one of them you miss very much. The lack of those features, especially the note index/table of contents feature, makes notes in Logos4 a different system altogether -- so much so that you can't use notes in L4 like you did in Libronix.

Is that about right?

You aren't the first to notice this, nor the first to lament the passing of this or other features in Notes. The top vote-getter on Logos UserVoice is about these very things. The other place to go with this is to the Suggestions forum. I say that assuming that you'd like the note features changed/restored. While it's not inappropriate to voice a frustration on these forums, it's more productive (IMHO) to make a suggestion.
