Thanks for Notes in the iPad app

Monday lunchtime I was asked to deliver a short talk on Monday evening.

After selecting an appropriate text I prepared my talk (using the power of L4) on my desktop writing notes against the verses.

I was then able to pick up my iPad and take it with me and refer to the text and associated (synced) notes using the app.

it was a great experience and a very helpful, integrated approach to study and delivery.

I know this is how it is designed to work but I just wanted to recognise the value it brings.

Coming from an almost older generation, the desktop/iPad app experience is just short of a miracle. Thanks Logos!

I find it odd however, when I select text (commentary, etc. ) on the ipad to annotate, it makes the selected text the title of the note. I would have expected (and suggest) that the selected text becomes the note itself. (like clippings?)

Is this the behaviour you expected?

Yes, I would have expected it to behave in this way as this is how the Notes function works on the desktop as well.

There have been recent discussions on threads suggesting changes to the way this works but whether anything will change in this area remains to be seen

This is absolutely true. This is for identification purposes (from within the L4 note file) only. When you highlight a passage of scripture, there is a built in way to identify a note… the Scriptural reference. In other resources, however, this is not an option. In L4, an abbreviated quote helps to identify what note goes with which highlight.

Your title can be edited to whatever you want, if you don' want it be the selected text you are free to change it.

Thanks, I understand this. It just seems odd to me that if I select a paragraph of text to comment on, that the paragraph becomes the title. I would have expected it to become the note content. On the desktop it is not a big problem because it is easy to cut Ctrl-x and paste Ctrl-V into the right places. On iPad, a little more difficult with big fingers.

As I said earlier, this is just for identification purposes. The iPad functions differently in that it does not truncate the highlight… it includes the entire passage. This may be a bug, an iPad limitation, or just a lack of consistency across platforms. I have asked the developers about this but haven't heard back. It was never a big enough issue for me to push for an answer.

My preference would be a little bit different. I would want to see three fields:

Title (should remain the same as in L4 - i.e. automatic truncated quote for ID purposes; can be changed by user)
Quote - (the entire passage quoted)
Commentary - (personal comments & notes)

It seems to me that I had another field when I thought about this last… I may have included a "reference" field for versified passages.

Most of my notes are short, but I just discovered if a note is long you can scroll through it on the iPad and read it all. What a neat feature! Thanks again!

If I remember correctly they will also be adding rich text formatting.
