Sweet! I'd been using a highlighter style in my palette to mark my place in a book, but having the markers in a separate palette so they'll be in their own Notes file makes a ton more sense.

Mine looks like this. I like yours; they're more colorful and you can have different texts for different purposes.

Cool. One other awesome thing I've just discovered about the new integration of Notes and Highlighting is that I no longer have to do a search for * with my "typo" highlighting style to find all the typos I've reported and follow up on whether Logos has fixed them yet or not. That used to take at least an hour, and wasn't always 100% reliable. Now I just open one File and voila, there are all my typo reports.

Only thing is I wish the Notes tab showed a count of how many notes are in it. I know I have over 1000 typo reports. They are currently in the My Palette notes file. I would like to Move them off into their own file since I'm guessing they are intermingled with other highlighting from My Palette, though to be honest, apart from the typo reports, I've only been using that palette for testing purposes thus far, so most of those are probably bogus ones I'd want to delete.

But the problem is trying to find those bogus ones to delete within a sea of over 1000 notes. I'd have to click on each one's icon to find out the name of the highlighting style I used, and delete the ones that aren't "Typo Reported" -- so I also wish there were a column in the note file that gave the name of the highlighting style.

Also, Andy, you can move a note from one Notes file to another by dragging it. So there's no need for a special Move command there.

You don't open a Note file from Highlighting.

1. You identify a palette's name in the Highlighting window (in example, Solid Colors).

2. Then you click on File in the top menubar. Then on the right side of the drop down menu you find that Highlighting file name and click on it to open the note file for that highlighting palette.

In Logos4 ver 4.5 and up, Logos puts a copy of each time you highlight into a note file (the file is named the same as the highlighting palette). For example, you will find a note file (under the File menu) for Solid Colors. If you have highlighted text in some of your resources with highlighting styles from the Solid Colors palette, you will see a note inside of that Note file for each place where you highlighted the text. In the Solid Colors note file you could click on the link (in the title of an individual note) and Logos4 will open that book and move the location in the book to where that highlight was applied.

EDIT: since the above steps require going through the File Menu, i used Favorites as mentioned in the top post in step #3 (but first had to use File menu to get it and copy it to Favorites). This way i can use Favorites to more quickly open the Note file in the future. If you did not want to use Favorites, you could add your Note file to the Shortcut bar, and then open the Note file from the Shortcut bar. These ideas just help you in the future make it easier to open the Note file.

EDIT2: the whole idea behind this tip is to be able to open a resource which has been marked by a specific Highlighting style using the highlighting style's note file.

It is true that we can use Bookmarks in L4 to mark where we are reading in different books, but with Bookmarks we are limited to 9 bookmarks and Morris has shown us that there are better uses for bookmarks.

i recently just upgraded to L4 ver 4.5 and have found a very useful feature in it (L4 places all Highlight Palettes in unique Note files). This fits in well with my Highlighting since i had them in a unique Palette. Below is how i use my Book Markers.

I have encountered some limitations in L4 that I wish the developers would address: I wish one could move the palettes around to suit your desires (minor), I wish that Files functioned more like Favorites in that you could cluster your Notes in headings and collapse and move them around as best suits your intentions or needs (major); this would I believe lend order to the imho chaos of Files.

Another unfortunate aspect that occurs is when you use a unique palette to mark your new place in the text you are studying it creates a new Note File. Now this would be fine if when you highlight it would end up in the newly created Note File which it does not. Again counter-intuitively a note added to the Reference ends up in the newly created Note File which you marked with your unique palette while the highlights remain in the original Note File. Help! I would so appreciate yours or anyone else's opinion on this matter. Here's a peek at what I do with your work:

i built a Visual Basic program tool which i posted early this year (Bibl2) which allows me to add all my L4 docs ordered by type and alphabetically into a PB. i keep this PB on my Shortcut bar and can easily drag it down and locate my Note files and click the link to open it.

1. Use Bibliography2 program to export all my L4 Documents to a temp Word document
a. In Bibliograph2 there is a button at the bottom center of the main window, it takes you to a smaller window which allows you to export the filenames with hyperlinks to a Word doc. i generally copy these from that Word doc to my PB Word doc.

2. Then i use L4's PB tool to build my PB for that Word doc (my docx for that is named MyLib).

3. Then in my PB i use the TOC to quickly locate my Note files. And in there my note files are listed alphabetically. Since they are all linked to my L4 note files, when i click on the filename L4 opens that Note file.

4. To make it quicker for me i keep a Shortcut for that PB on my L4 shortcut bar.

I wish one could move the palettes around to suit your desires (minor),

L4 has a new menu entry in the Highlighting tool (Move) which allows you to move styles. This allows you to move a style from and existing Palette to a new palette or another existing palette. This might do what you desire, but one style at a time. But i suspect that you want to move the notes which are attached to a palette instead. i haven't yet found a simple way to do this other than one note at a time.

First, Thanks so much for taking the time to address my issues (you may have noticed I amended my initial post adding other problems I encountered). You obviously have acquired a facility with computer Kung Fu I can only stand agape with awe.

I follow your solution and admire it. However, I thirst to see Logos provide flexibility and simplicity to this very important feature of note taking and highlighting. Your OP goes a long way to providing this.

I want to be able to take a book out of my library read, bookmark, research, analyze, leave notes and organize them, then most importantly be able to quickly return to them. My thirst has not been slaked to this point. But, you and of course Logos still holds out hope. For me this matter of notes are the number one issue for this powerful, fun and useful program. Thanks again for offering your wisdom
