New to Logos and questions about the software

I have looked around at the software and i am curious if someone could point what is the best bet. I am currently in school to get a Master of Pastoral Studies and admin degree. I am have looked at the Catholic Scholars because my program is at a catholic college? is that the right choice or should i go with another base package? Thank for all the help i am a bit confused by all the different packages.

Although you may have already seen THIS COMPARISON of the products, I thought I'd recommend it to you again with my advice: If you do indeed intend to pursue a pastoral ministry in the Catholic church, it would seem the Catholic Scholars base package may be best for you. However, if your interest is more Protestant in nature, then I'd recommend you focus on the differences in in the Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages on the comparison chart. Obviously, the higher the package, the more resources you have at your disposal. Many (most?) of us began with a lower base package and find ourselves upgrading to Platinum (some of us with intermediate stops along the way) plus individual resource additions along the way.

Now. Finally. My personal recommendation: Buy Platinum if you can afford it [:D]

Thank you for the quick reply. yes i have used both comparison plus and excel chart i found in the forum floating around. I am leaning towards the Catholic Scholar and wanted some input because of the amount that i will spend as for the Platinum i do think it is well worth the money just at this time in point i cannot invest that much for it.

If it's possible, find out what resources your college recommends then you could look at each package and see which one best suits your needs.

With no doubt in my heart, as it has been stated before, "get Platinum if you can afford it." If not, at least go for Gold and then add whatever other resources you may need.

Also, since you are a student, be sure you call Logos Sales and get the academic pricing instead of buying it via the website. It's a significant discount off the advertised prices. I can't remember how much, since I never went that route. 40-50% I think, but don't quote me on that.

Yes i have the academic pricing all ready applied. i was able to get it through my school. so that has helped a bit out on pricing, but platinum one is still a bit out of my range when you are paying for classes also.

If choose a standard base package, could add Catholic Library Builder (238 vols.) that notably does not have An Exposition of the Acts of the Apostles, by John MacEvilly

Looking at original language grammar and tools in Catholic Scholars, noticed correspondence with Scholar's Silver base package for many resources.

Comparing retail prices, noticed Catholic Scholar’s Library is $ 789.95 while Scholar’s Library: Silver (JG) is $ 999.95 and Catholic Library Builder (238 vols.) is $ 419.95 that totals to $ 1,419.90

The value of Logos base packages depends on resource usability.

I'm not sure if you're saying that you are Catholic, or just that you're studying at a Catholic college, but assuming the former, I'd definitely recommend the highest Catholic package you can afford. The 'normal' base packages are very Evangelical, and now that there are Catholic packages I see little reason for a Catholic to buy any of them. There are wiser ways to use your money.

Speaking of which, don't miss to take a look at CP and prepub, which is where you can order new books cheaper before they're shipped. If you click on Christian Group > Catholic in the left column, you can filter the list to only those books that are tagged as Catholic.

I must admit I have no idea about the requirements and the curriculum of a Master of Pastoral Studies and Admin, let alone a Catholic one. A good idea always would be to find out the books your college professors require for class. If your education there rests a lot on Catholic Theology (from Aquinas via Newman to more recent Dogmatics), you are likely to end up with buying the Catholic Library Builder on top of a protestant base package, if you don't go for Catholic Scholars (CS). But the question is, whether CS will suit your needs.

As you may have seen in the comparison sites and the excel sheet, the CS package will be a bit short on commentaries. If you should need such, I'd recommend at least Tyndale's http://www.logos.com/product/8593/tyndale-commentaries as it covers the whole bible and imho is unbeaten for cost/benefit. Obviously there is no limit on the money you can spend on commentaries with Logos...

The CS has even less than the protestant base packages in terms of reference works - many forum posters indicate that one needs to invest into either ISBE or AYBD or the IVP Essential Reference collection anyway - the latter is much recommended and may be on sale these days. You should factor in these cost.

Lastly, the biggest difference between CS and the protestant packages is the plethora multitude of ministry resources. If Pastoral Studies as you approach them a) have a lot to do with Preaching, Small-Group Leadership and Counseling, and b) are comparable with these things in protestant churches, then you may find help in the protestant base packages. If not so, you are better off with CS and investing the monetary difference into resources that help you more.

Just my personal view.

No offense, but I doubt Tyndale is what a Catholic college would recommend. There are a few volumes of Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture in prepub, and there are more complete Catholic commentary series on the way, hopefully soon.

As for pastoral resources, Catholic ones are bound to be rather different to the ones in Logos' base packages. The homiletic tradition is not the same, and there are a number of sacraments that should feature prominently in Catholic books, just to name two things.

I will say Jeffery that you are the best person to figure out what you need. I personally see the silver/gold/platinum/portfolio packages as a total waste of money. The theology found in these packages is not the same theology that I profess. I will also say that the same would be someone who is part of RC. If you have some questions on what would be and what would not be a good source, as the place of higher learning. They would be able to help with what you will need as a student there.
