Just wondering if anyone had some favorite "Sermon on the Mount" resources they'd recommend.
Helping people find seminary scholarships and church jobs.

One that is easy to forget is the Hermeneia volume on the sermons on the mount/plain. The author is fairly liberal, but the introduction is very good on the impact on the early church and then into later specific theological writers.

My favorite is "The Bible Speaks Today" series and the volume on The Sermon on the Mount by Stott.

I would start with any Bible Dictionaries or Bible Encyclopedias, I checked some of the volumes I own and they have fairly lengthy articles on the Sermon on the Mount:
- Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels
- International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Rev. Ed.
- Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary
- Lexham Bible Dictionary

Boice and Lloyd-Jones both have series on the Sermon on the Mount. I've not used either one, but I've used enough by both of them on other things that I would be interested in what they have to say here.

I really like what Tom Wright does with the Sermon on the Mount, arguing we need to understand what Jesus was saying to Israel before we understand what Jesus is saying to us. For exmaple, see his Matthew for Everyone Part 1 commentary (SPCK, 2004), or in Jesus and the Victory of God (SPCK, 1996), pages 288-289:
I suggest that the beatitudes can be read, in some such way, as an appeal to Jesus’ hearers to discover their true vocation as the eschatological people of YHWH, and to do so by following the praxis he was marking out for them.Stott's The Message of the Sermon on the Mount (IVP, 1978) in the Bible Speaks Today series is also good.
Presumably you have already checked your Matthew commentaries.

For practical, teaching/preaching material I recommend John G. Butler's "Jesus Christ: His Sermon on the Mount" That along with a good commentary on Matthew can serve you well. Personally, I've used Butler's material and only refer to commentaries whenever there's a "technicality" issue with the text that requires deeper explaining. Other than that, I find Butler's material very good for teaching/preaching.

I enjoyed the Sermon on the Mount section in Leon Morris' commentary on Matthew in the Pillar series. Thought provoking (at least for me as a layperson) and an easy read.

None are in Logos, but these were my keys for hearing the Sermon within (and against) the historical culture:
Honor and Shame in the Gospel of Matthew, Jerome H. Neyrey, WJK (1998), Part 3. Neyrey's essay, "Honoring the Dishonored: The Cultural Edge of Jesus' Beatitudes" is an earlier, briefer reading.
NT Wright's essay, "The Lord's Prayer as a Paradigm of Christian Prayer, (Part 2)"
and especially Brad Pitre's essay, “The Lord’s Prayer and the New Exodus.” Letter & Spirit: A Journal of Catholic Biblical Theology 2 (2006): 69-96.

Reading the entries on the Sermon on the Mount, righteousness, the Kingdom of God, faith, God as Father, prayer, gehenna and more will go a long way in investing what is encountered in the sermon with fuller understanding of the concepts as used in the gospels in general, in the synoptics more narrowly and in Matthew most particularly. Although the dictionary is one resource, the articles are written by different authors. Additionally, there is often topic interconnectedness, so you get either confirmation or different perspectives on each topic.

I'm doing my doctoral thesis on peacemaking and focusing entirely on the sermon on the mount. I have nearly every commentary on Matthew (and the Sermon on the Mount) that is available through Logos. I affirm much of what has been said already.Don't overlook the NICNT volume by France. It is excellent
The Pillar set is also very good, as are the NAC and the Baker Exegetical series.
I affirm both Hermeniea Commentaries (Betz on just MT 5-7)
Think hard about getting the Exegetical Guide, which has a single volume to the SOM (this is a must have IMO)
NT Wright is also very good, especially at the popular level.
An extremely helpful JBL article can be found by Glen Stassen on the triadic structure. This interpretive paradigm opened my eyes to a whole new understanding and appreciation of Christ's teaching. It can also be found in a non-Logos book called, Living the Sermon on the Mount.

Would that be the volume put out by SIL? I've not used this particular one, but others in this series are excellent.

I so wish Logos would offer Lloyd-Jones' studies on the Sermon on the Mount.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones' Studies in the Sermon on the Mount is a book that changed my life in 1975. I still know of nothing to compare to it. Unfortunately, it is not available in Logos, but it is in print and widely available.
