Status: Hebrew Audio Pronunciations Pre-Pub

As requested, an update on Hebrew Audio Pronunciations (http://www.logos.com/product/5960/hebrew-audio-pronunciations)
We just don't know. But it's getting closer.
We put this project on pre-pub prematurely, before we realized all the ways in which offering this for Hebrew are more complicated than for Greek. We've had enough interest to do the project -- and we want to do it -- but it's tied to some complicated issues related to how Hebrew dictionaries use different 'dictionary forms' (and are not always consistent between dictionaries and morphological analyses). It's not quite as easy as the Greek pronunciations.
The "gating issues" and the work that must be done in preparation are largely done, but some work remains, and we're still some months out on this project. We just didn't want to cancel it because we do intend to do it, though it's taking much longer than any other pre-pub.

Thanks for the update. I recall the discussion some time ago about mapping lexical forms to the lexicons and the complexity of doing that. Gives me an appreciation for how hard what you are trying to do is.

The website declares: Hebrew Audio Pronunciations will only be available for Logos 4.
Does this mean it will not work in Logos 5? Or is the meaning simply that a CD version is not available. I think the sentence makes it unclear whether this product will be useable once it comes out only for L4 or whether it will be useable in subsequent releases of Logos (such as L5 and L6)
Clarification from Logos would be appreciated.

No. It means it won't be available for Logos 3!

Thanks for the update, Bob. Sure it will be very worthwhile despite all the time and effort this project has required.

I'm happy the project is coming along. I use to be an MVS Systems Programmer, I know about complications, delays and expactations. Keep making progress and the best of luck to you.

I appreciate the update. Please don't let it slip to the back burner - it will be a really useful asset once complete and I for one can't wait!!!!! (except I must!!!!! [^o)]

Now that Logos 5 has shipped, I am hoping that the work that remains on Hebrew Audio Pronunciations can move back to the front burner. This would be such an awesome resource to have!

[Y] I'll add another "Amen!" to that and additionally ask for another update. It's been about 8 months since the last "official" update. Increasing the periodicity of these updates would be extremely, I dare say...0 -
I also would like to see this resource completed. Since the Greek pronunciation has been available, and the Hebrew not, it has the effect of a program that is missing something. Like a car running on 3 wheels. Although it will run, it will run a lot better with the 4th wheel. [:)]

Does anyone at Logos have an official word on the status of this resource?

The last post I saw about this was from Bob P. and he basically said they were working on it. We have been hearing that for years so I suspect it may be a situation similar to Matthew 24:36

When we hear that they're working on it, this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. (Matthew 24:8)
This mother has been in labor for an awfully long time, so this is going to be one big baby!

Here's the last post from Bob on May 9th, where he says it's further delayed.

Previous to that he had said end of first half of 2013. If they are still trying to get good recordings, I suspect it will be a while.

Why not just perform a C-section? [:D]

It has been a long time. It would be nice to receive another update from Logos.

I literally don't know what to say. I have heard in the past week that the near-final part of the process is underway, but like you, I know longer believe or rely on the predictions. This is the product that will be done when it's done, and I can't add any more insight, and I have as much frustration as you do.

I'm kind of late to this party. But shouldn't there be at least a sample reading, say of some famous passages, to help buyers make up their mind on this product?

I used to be frustrated every time it got pushed back. I now have adopted the view of it "will be done when it's done." I just don't worry anymore.

I assume this work has been farmed out and it's difficult if not impossible to find out a real status, or manage the project with tasks, milestones, accomplishments, ie. basic things that would enable the management to assess true progress. I guess that can be the only explanation - this requires some out of house expertise and it will be done when it's done. I guess another explanation is that it is way down in someone's queue and it just doesn't get worked on.
If it's in house, no excuse not to be able to have a reasonable project plan, proper staffing, and progress monitored and verified against small accomplishments, right? Even grossly under-estimated tasks would have been broken into more detail and re-estimated, and staffing committed to by management, some time over the course of the last six years it has been on pre-pub.

This isn't an audio OT. It's the Hebrew version of the Greek Pronunciation tool that you already have under Tools. I e it only reads lemmas.
LOGOS: You need to remove all the links to the Greek Pronunciation Addin, as there no longer is such a product.

I get it now. [Sorry, I'm a bit slow.]
I guess my brain just filtered out the fact that it's just a reading of lemmas only, because something relatively simple as that shoudn't take 6 years to develop.

Apparently, it isn't so simple:

In another place, Bob mentioned that Logos had gone through a couple of voice talents... I don't remember the details...

My understanding is that they've kept finding themselves in situations where they can't do A without first doing B and C, and they can't do B until they've done D, E and F, and so on.

Bob Pritchett said:It turns out to be more difficult than we intended. We want it to work with all our Hebrew databases, and they have (sometimes dramatically) different lemmatization systems. It's not as easy as just saying "pronounce the root word" -- you have to define what the root word is.

@fgh:
Lee said:Probably there is some kind of inherited mess going on. I suspect that the only true solution would be to introduce some kind of interstitial data or interstitial mapping to take into account the very different varieties of Greek and the different corpora, and then to rationalize the terms used.
Said in relation to the Greek corpora, but it is now evident to me that a similar issue exists in the Semitic corpora as well.
Lee said:That could well be a job for Logos 6.
This is one of those times I hope I'm wrong.

Yes, don't hold your breath!
It's been almost 2 years since Logos said they were "getting closer." I think they should just drop whatever it is that they're dreaming about doing to make this thing unique. It's only making them look bad. They should just settle for a "Talking Strong's" type of format. At least people would get an idea on how a word is pronounced and if they're not happy with it, then they can go and learn Hebrew elsewhere; but up until now, I have never heard of people complaining about the pronunciation contained in the Talking Strong's Hebrew or Greek pronunciation. Anyway, I just re-placed my order again like I've done so many times since I can remember just to remind myself that this is still out there [*-)] and not finished [:'(]. I don't know, they might end up offering it for free as part of the Logos 10 Titanium Package when it finally gets done [6] if it ever gets done [A] -- but I guess that remains to be seen [*-)]
Anyway, I'm going to bed [|-)] and dream about the so called Hebrew Audio Pronunciation. Who knows, tomorrow may finally be the day when we see it downloading into our systems.

The Hebrew text that underlies the Greek of Second Peter says: First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘Hebrew Audio Pronuciation' they promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation" trying to make heads or tails of Strong's numbers!
