Importing Notes into Logos 4 for Windows

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me.

Some years ago I spent a good deal of time collating my hand written Bible notes into electronic form (a spreadsheet basically) which I was then able to import into the Notes facility in Laridian's Pocketbible product.

Since then I have become a hardened Logos 4 addict and would really like to get all those notes into Logos without going through all the manual re-work again.

Is there any way of importing Notes data from file formats like Excel into L4? The spreadsheet is very basic in structure (id, book no. chap no. verse no. note text) but obviously can be manipulated to produce a different format if required.

Any suggestions for me?

No. You'll have to copy-and-paste, I'm afraid. Or wait and hope they create an import function in the future.

I see three ways of doing this, and none of them are that easy. It all depends on your personal skills of converting and formatting data.

#1 - L3 uses XML. If you can export your data into XML with the tags that L3 knows, you can export your data to L3 and than import your data into L4.

#2 - L4 uses a simple database to store our notes. You can use export your data into a standard SQL statement and than run a program that can execute your SQL and import your data into L4. NOTE: L4 stores the note in RTF format, so you will also need to reformat your note so that it is also RTF (NOT AN EASY TASK)

#3 - Export your data to MS Word, add the needed milestones, and then add them as a Personal Book.

Hmm... #1 and 2 maybe beyond my technical abilities but I'll investigate. In fact 2 maybe my only option as Logos 4 was the first version I bought so don't have L3.

Can you give me an example of a program that could execute SQL to populate a L4 database?

I have managed to create a Personal Book with the notes already but it's not ideal in terms of continuing to edit/add to them.

Thanks for supplementing my obviously too hasty answer, Tom. Options 1 and 2 are far beyond my level of expertise, and I've never before seen a hint of them being possible at all, but I should have thought about the PB option.

Of course, one reason I didn't is that for me the note icon is 99% of the note, and I can't imagine any of your methods will produce such.

In fact 2 maybe my only option as Logos 4 was the first version I bought so don't have L3.

L3 is free to download and you can run them both, as long as you have the disk space.

Add a couple different notes
Open the note file (it will be stored in the following directory: Documents\Libronix DLS\Annotations) using a test editor
See if you can understand the file's syntax to see if you can recreate it

Option #2 is by a lot more complex. Just concerting your note into the RTF format can cause some major headaches.

You will also need to know SQL which is the language databases use. For an example, each note will need its own SQL statement, and it will need to look something like INSERT INTO STATION VALUES (13, 'Phoenix', 'AZ', 33, 112); (NOTE: L4 note's database does not have a station table, I am just using this as an example).
