Classic Commentaries avalanche

I expected that this day would come eventually...I'm actually surprised it took this long, though I have been holding out hope it wouldn't. One can always hope, right? A few months back there was a wild push to get every single CC collection into production--NOW!! Well, now the time I expected has arrived. Although I have bought all of the CCC's up to this point, I clearly won't be able to continue doing so...not with $205 worth coming out in a two-week time period. And that doesn't even address the additional $305 of non-CC items that are coming out in that same 15-day window.

I posted about this flooding the market strategy a couple of years ago. Apparently there are some Logos users with unlimited resources--and because they have no problem dropping (so it seems) $500-1000 a month (or more), they think that this "the-faster-the-better" approach to new Logos content is fabulous. Bully for them. I simply can't do that. And since I know I absolutely WILL NOT pick up the CCs once they go off CP pricing, and I now know that I will therefore not get all of them like I originally wanted and was willing to do, this is me crying "uncle".

I'm not going to agonize about which 2 or 3 I will get and which 3-4 I will let disappear forever. I'm just going to do what I did with almost 2 years ago and just stop trying to get the things I would like to have. Logos, as far as I am concerned, makes it pretty easy to quit my Logos habit. I used to spend about $200-300 a month...not any more. Except for the CC's, I have pretty much stopped getting Logos stuff--I got tired of the agony of seeing three long-awaited $200 items I wanted coming out within 5 days of each other. As I've said before, I don't really need ANYTHING else. I purchase now for desire. But Logos's firehose strategy washes away my desire--there's just no fun in trying to drink from a firehose.

I understand where you are coming from. We all have limited resources and insatiable wants. I am grateful that I have purchased a number of excellent resources on C.P., but there's no way I can get them all.

My guess is that Logos' margins are higher on the C.C. sets than some other things they sell because they are public domain works. You may want to target some of the sets you can't pick up now at the Thanksgiving and Christmas sales. Call up your sales rep and see what he or she can do for you. I have picked up a few of my "must haves" that way at lower cost than I would have otherwise had to pay.

There is a downside to Logos' monetization strategy; they eventually lose their best customers to their legacy sales to those customers. There comes a point where a larger library offers diminishing returns for many folks--both in the utility of "yet another commentary" as well as the performance hit that a large library imposes (in many ways). Hopefully they continue to attract new customers so they can pay their cloud bills so my library keeps working for perpetuity...

I feel your budget frustration. My solution has been to only purchase those cc's that I know I will use repeatedly. Other public domain works, I figure I can look up online when I need to occasionally reference something.

One thing that really helps me is that I try to decide which works I will really need. If an older work is important, then newer commentators will interact with it anyway, so you don't absolutely have to have it, even though it is nice to be able to go back to a source.

Anyway, after I think long and hard, I add it to my orders; however, I revisit my orders page every couple of days to rethink everything that's there. I end up dropping a bunch after I've had time to consider more.

I am also running into the problem of more books to buy on CP than the budget allows. I've seen it mentioned that many of these public domain books are available as ebooks downloads. Is it against forum rules to post sites where one can download public domain books safely?

Thanks, folks. Some of the stuff I was thinking about downloading separately from Logos were items such as "Books of the East" or the Islam set as well as biographies, etc. While it would be nice to have them there with the search facility, IMHO, it's not as critical as say, commentaries.

I understand brother. My own finances have tightened considerably due to family obligations, taxes, etc. I had to cancel the last NIVOT/NT upgrade because of a cash flow problem. Dadgum, I hated to do that. But as soon as I did it, I knew I had done the right thing. I am becoming much more selective - both price-wise and resource-wise.

But like you, I really don't need any more commentaries. I want them, but I really don't need them, and the Lord never promised to supply all my wants. Of course, I wish all those who can afford to buy them the very best. At some point I will probably pick some of them up, though it will cost me nearly twice as much.

Still, I am thankful that Logos has made it possible for me to have a far, far better library than I ever dreamed I could afford.
