Personal Books - "You don't have a license..."

My personal books are in a file on my laptop in "C" drive. I have successfully installed them in Logos 4. I also use my desktop computer at the church - "C" drive is an SSD reserved for operating systems only. My personal books there are on my "D" drive in a file. When I open my personal books on my laptop things work just fine. Moving to my desktop, I receive the message "You don't have a license to view this resource..." If I reinstall all the books on the desktop and then move to my laptop, I receive the identical message. Does Logos 4 require the personal books be installed with the same "C" designation? I should mention I am running Windows 7 64 bit on my desktop with LOTS of horsepower (CPU Intel Quad Core I7 2.93 g, 8 gb of very fast RAM etc...) My laptop runs Win 7 64 bit with LOTS of horsepower (CPU Intel I5, 6 gb very fast ram etc...)

Any help would be appreciated.

Could you copy your personal book file from your laptop and paste it in your resource folder with all your other resources?

Where Logos 4 is installed determines where your resources are - they have to be in the \Logos4 folder eg. ...\Logos4\Data\RandomUserId\ResourceManager\Resources. The source docx files for your Personal Books can be anywhere because you can tell the PB Tool where they are located. The PB Tool will compile those files, moves the resulting PB resource to the \Resources folder and then indexes it. You can do the same thing on another computer provided you tell the PB Tool where the source files are (the information about your Personal Books is sync'd to other computers but you have to copy the source files).

To avoid re-compiling on another computer you must get the PB resources from the original computer eg. copy the \Resources folder to a removable drive and then use the scan command on the other computer eg. scan E:\Resources - where E: is the removable drive. Restart L4 and it will copy all missing resources from the folder and index them.

The idea behind and advantage of Logos is a cloud capability. We compose notes and they are carried to our other platforms via the "cloud". Why do we have to use "sneaker and thumbdrive LAN" with our personal books? That is pretty backwards.

Thanks, hopefully it is in the works. It is just a matter of priorities and it seems PBB has never been much of a priority after rolling it out.

Previous Known Issues

Personal Books
- Books compiled in the beta cycle will expire, at the latest, when 4.3 is shipped to the stable channel due to further changes that will be made.
- Personal Books will not automatically sync between computers.
- Personal Books from LDLS3 (*.lbxpbb) cannot be read in Logos 4; they will need to be recompiled from the original sources. For more information, see this thread.
- Not all formatting is preserved, e.g. margins, indentation, paragraph and text spacing, text effects and word art, highlighting, and fill effects are ignored.
- Text boxes, charts, embedded documents and other similar features are not supported.
- From within the PB panel, a Personal Book cannot be dragged to the Shortcut bar or to a particular location on the screen to control where the book opens. (See this thread.)
- Although a resource can be built with the “Bible” type, it will not function correctly as a Bible in Logos 4 (e.g., Copy Bible Verses, Bible Text Only, etc., do not work).
Sync
- Sync of new/edited Copy Bible Verses styles will fail on a stable install where the login is also used for a beta install. (See this thread or this thread.)

Why do you say that? As I've understood it they've pretty much rebuilt the whole syncing process in order to make it possible to sync and share PB's and a few other things. I don't know how much more they could prioritize it.

The Logos 4 platform has been in place for 3 years and notes have been able to be synchronized for a couple of years at least (if memory serves me correctly). Maybe it could have a priority somewhere close to notes -- like within a couple of years.

OK, I only counted the last year, since the PB feature was first released, since that was the time frame you mentioned in the post above. And in that year they've done a lot of under the hood work that had to be done before PB syncing can work.

I also think you're missing that syncing PB's is much more complicated than syncing notes. Just two examples (as I've understood them):

When Logos sells a book, the same master file can be synced to every buyer, so they only really need one copy on their servers (plus some security backups). When notes are synced, they need to store a copy of every single users files, but note files are fairly small, so that's still not a major problem. But when PB's are synced, that's a whole different ball game. If PB's are synced like notes, they need to store every single PB from every single user on their servers. If 500 users have the very same PB, they need to store 500 copies. And then probably (hopefully) backups as well. That's an awful lot of server space to pay for! (I suspect one of the ideas behind the PB store is that its infrastructure will make it possible to use one master file for PB's as well.)
If people make PB's out of copyrighted works, and those PB's are synced to Logos' servers, what are the legal consequences? Is Logos committing a crime by hosting them there? I think you can be pretty certain that Bob won't release any PB's syncing until he's certain he won't be sued for everything he owns because of it. And investigating tricky legal issues can take time.

Furthermore, you're not exactly the only one waiting for features. Others are screaming for all sorts of things that they are missing most. Personally, I've owned Logos for two years, and I still can't use it for anything other than finding an endless number of new bugs. It takes me something like 8-10 hours to get 10 minutes or so of work done. Is your PB syncing really more important than getting me a program where at least the simplest of features work?

So if the way you have presented it is the crux of the issue, it seems Bob is down to a choice between mega-server space vs. legal liability of copyright violations with significant but less storage space required. So maybe the PB Store is going to take some time to work out the legal issues.

But server space in this era is a commodity that companies trade in order to sell products. Amazon, MSN, and Gmail are only a few of the many companies who store vast amounts of data with no direct compensation for the data storage. They offer storage at no cost to facilitate and/or market other money-making products. The first and only book I have loaded into Logos PBB after owning Logos for over 15 years and PBB for about 6 or 8 years (I think - remember I first purchased it before it was part of the base package) was sent to me by the Christian brother who wrote it via email from South Africa. If it were sent by Gmail, it would cost nothing for the email storage of the book and accompanying email and the liability would be between the sender and the receiver.

So the technology and capabilities are there. Notes already does what PBB needs to do to be fully implemented (I regard the PB store as an added feature). And at this point, I have far more data in Notes than I do in PBB. If your assessment of the situation touches on the major considerations, storage space is the key factor standing in the way of implementation. And more specifically, the cost of storage space is the key factor standing in the way of implementation. So it seems that Bob will need to be able to see a cost benefit before this feature is fully implemented, it is up to me to help him see it.

I already have asked my wife for an upgrade to Platinum for Christmas. I have my eye on the big HALOT bundle and I glean through the prepub offers looking for bargains on a regular basis. I guess I need to put all this on hold until Bob starts to see that adding more storage space would be a good business decision.

As for your struggles with being able to use Logos, it sounds like you must be a Mac user. I feel your pain as the shoe was on the other foot when Logos chose to roll out the iPhone app before Android. And Android and Vyrso are still eons behind Kindle and Nook. I have to be receiving a signal to read anything on my Android device and I live outside of good cell phone range. So the phone apps are virtually useless to me for nightly devotions out of range of my wireless LAN. The simple added feature of being able to download and archive the resources of your choice (like Kindle and Nook) would be big for me.

Hang in there, brother or sister. When you get fully implemented and proficient with the software, your time savings will more than compensate for your current time lost.
