Slow because it is a netbook, I had the same problem for a while, then I ditched the netbook.
It is the Netbook that is slow. The Starter version is cut down for Netbook hardware but is restricted to 2 GB memory irrespective of hardware. Otherwise, it runs software like any other version.

I think it it the Atom processor and 2Gb RAM that slows it down, but (I may be wrong) I believe only netbooks are sold with W7 starter, so it is unlikely that anybody has W7 starter unless they have a netbook.

I don't believe so. Notice at winows.microsoft.com there is no price listed for starter while the other editions do have prices.
Very satisfied with Netbook performance when I use it - though that is less frequently now with a Tablet PC laptop. The Netbook's most common role now is as a GPS using MS Streets and Trips.
