Clause search

Having trouble with this also-sigh ( smile ).

Perhaps I misunderstand it's usage/intention.

First , my question ( which may answer everything for me ).

Is this set up as a subjective set of presets as to the date it looks for/finds or, is this set up based on the tagging of the texts?

The reason I ask is that it does not find the things I am looking for.

If based on text tagging, the problem is probably operator error.

If based on subjective "sets" then the problem may be Theological in the sense I am asking for information from a different theological perspective than those setting up the functions.

Just asking, not complaining.

The Clause search is based on referent tagging that, usually, is not theological in nature. What are you trying find? With some specific examples we should be able to help you either find what you're looking for or better define the parameters of what the Clause search can do.

Thanks Kevin, sorry to be so much trouble.

Trying : Christ, King. or Jesus, King.

No matter how I enter the query I get the dreaded ( smile ) red box.

I have tried every recommended combination.

This is not a killer for me as I have others ways of doing these searches ( as I always have in version 4 ) , but thought this might be a nice use of the new tool.

Anything I have accomplished wants to give me things like :Kings of Judah etc.

Was looking for direct and indirect reference, inference to Jesus/Christ/messiah as King all through scripture.

Thought this would be simple ( possibly pretty cool-smile ) use of new tool.

Again- No biggie, just trying to learn new functions as I go along with some research/studies/sermon/class prep.

No problem at all.

The issue here is that the Clause search has some limitations (at least right now) compared to the regular search. We can look for the places where the person Jesus is tagged. However we can't look for the word "King" in the same clause as the Jesus tag. Also, Boolean operators such as OR don't work (I hope this is a "yet" case). Basically enter ever item you want to find separated by spaces.

However, it's possible to work around these limitations to accomplish what you're looking for.

Run a clause search for Jesus - person:Jesus
Save the search results as a Passage List
Run a second search for King and restrict it to your Passage List.

With : Person:Jesus Subject:king, this should have (imho) given this result , as well as others.

Found a clause search that includes Mt2.6 (place includes Mt2.1, Mt2.5, and Mt2.8)

Also learned Logos 5.0a has two resources that can be used for clause searching. Right click in those resources shows Person, and Places, which can be searched using clause search.

Person:Jesus does find Matt 2.2, but "King of the Jews" does not seem to have been tagged anywhere. Definite oversight.

CORRECTION: King of the Jews has been tagged. It just takes a convoluted search to find it

EDIT AGAIN: None of the suggestions above yields a hit. Guess that iw why "King of" is red. Finding Jesus as King seems rather complex.

You can now get suggestions by first typing the referent e.g. Jesus or King of rather than person:Jesus

Tried that. Typed Jesus and then selected "Person:Jesus" from the drop down. Then tried "King", but none suggestions would have found Jesus as King.

This seems weird to me. I would expect 'King of the Jews' to give hits in both the infancy and the passion narratives, as well as a couple of other places.

I think one of the first things I will do when I finally can lay hands on L5 will be to try out the clause search for various christological titles: king, suffering servant, son of David, Messiah...

Yes, anything that turns red or causes the search box to turn red is a dead query , but Logos seems to try and make suggestions.

I wanted every place there was inference to Christ as King ( Direct, indirect etc. ) and found this to be an incomplete data search.

Just did the search the old fashioned way-no problem.

We just need to know this function is not a complete tool in some ways, as yet.

Just using the "and" and "or" commands in the search functions as I saw from Mark Barnes video's ( I think ) from version 4 and then, just good old fashioned reading through all the results.

One of the things we do have to be careful about in using powerful tools is forgetting to read and, read critically . So, sometimes, a tool not working is a great opportunity to "dig-in" a bit directly with the text, never a bad thing imho.
