Various Logos versions of Calvin's Institutes

I currently have 2 versions of Calvin's Institutes in my Logos library, both are translated by Beveridge, and seem very similar, not sure why I have 2 different resources, but they are not identical.

I just noticed that there is a new version of Calvin's Institutes available as a pre-pub:

My question: Is there a value in adding the new pre-pub version to my library? I am not a Calvinist, but I do like to have a well rounded library with different perspectives.

Also, I am curious as to why I already have 2 different yet similar versions of Calvin's Institutes, both translated by Beveridge.

The version presently on pre-pub is the McNeill edition built around the Ford Lewis Battles translation and is widely considered to be the standard. I own a paper copy of this and, in my view, it is vastly (vastly) superior to the Beveridge editions currently available in Logos. The McNeill edition includes a scholarly introduction, references and bibliographies.

The value of this will, of course, as with any resource, depend upon your interests and present needs. For the student of Calvin, however, I would suggest that this is essential.

For the reasons Andy gives, I have ordered and am waiting for the Battles/McNeill edition in pre-pub.

But I also noticed that I also have 2 different resources of the Beveridge edition. One was updated to my library earlier this month; it has a resource date of October of 2010 (the other is dated 2009). The one with the older resource date is indexed only with regard to Institutes sections, while the newer resource is indexed for Volume/Page, in addition to Institutes sections. As a consequence, the newer one has a page index. It also has a scripture index and author index, which the older one lacks. Incidentally, the newer edition is the only one in my Android library.

I haven't yet read this work, and am hoping Battles/McNeill will be released for Logos soon. (I don't generally purchase paper books anymore, as a vision impairment makes electronic versions easier to deal with.) Until then, I will hide the older of the two Beveridge editions; it's the one with the larger, centered portrait of Calvin on the cover.

When will the Ford Lewis Battles 1960 ed of Calvin's 1559 Inst. be available? I'm buying the huge Calvin library until they include the FLB ed.

There's no way to tell for sure. It is now showing as 'under contract' which means there is a finite date when it will be done (unlike 'gathering interest', which can last forever).

I assume you mean you are *not* buying the Calvin library until they include the FLB translation, but you might want to check with sales as that edition may never make it in to the Calvin bundle.
