Release notes said that 5.0a was supposed to have a visual filter for common highlights but this is nowhere to be found.

Popular Highlights were introduced in the 5.0a Beta testing, but presented some performance problems so they are currently disabled.
More accurately:
The code for Popular Highlights has been included in 5.0a. However, for Popular Highlights to show up for any resource the resource needs to receive confirmation from the server that Popular Highlights are available for that resource. For now, the server is set to not allow Popular Highlights for any resource.
When the performance issues for Popular Highlights have been addressed, the server will be updated to allow Popular Highlights. At that point, all 5.0a users will have access to Popular Highlights without needing to download a program update.

Can we opt NOT to share our highlighting, not sure about sharing mine
My assumption is it will work like it does with a Kindle. It doesn't tell you who highlighted what. What happens is if several people have highlighted something it will simply highlight it and tell how many others have highlighted. Granted this is only speculation of how L5 will work.
