How to create a list of all the Bible verses that contain a specific word or phrase

I am trying to create an exportable (pasteable) list of all the verses in Matthew that contain the phrase "kingdom of Heaven" (KoH).  I eventually want to compare these verses with "matching" verses in Mark and Luke that use the phrase "kingdom of God" instead of KoH.  I am an old Logos 2.0/2.1 user who has totally UNSUCCESSFULLY transition to Logos 4; I must have a mental block in getting into this and would prefer to go back to 2.0/2.1 even though most of my resources would be unusable (I'll limp along like I used to!!).  I have been able to put together ON SCREEN the list of 31 verses, but apparently Logos has blocked using the cursor sweep to highlight verses, then copying them as a block and pasting them into Word.  I can INDIVIDUALLY transfer a verse to a reading pane and then using the one verse at a time "copy Bible verse" tool, I can paste them into a Word document.  It's a little bit quicker than handwriting, but not much.

Is there a way to permit highlighting with a cursor and then copying / pasting, or is that being developed for Logos 10??  Any Help would be appreciated.  Thanks and God Bless you... 20121128

Hi Joseph - and welcome to the forums

Is there a way to permit highlighting with a cursor and then copying / pasting, or is that being developed for Logos 10??  Any Help would be appreciated.  Thanks and God Bless you... 20121128

This is straightforward in Logos 4 (the screenshots below are from Logos 5 but it works the same in L4)

The first picture is the search (which from what you said you have already done)

    image

Then from there, select the "Print/Export" function by clicking on the icon in the top-left corner

    image

From the dialog box which pops up you can export into other applications such as Word

You will see in the dialog box in the second screenshot other options such as Passage List which enables you to save the results of the search for later manipulation.

    Hope this helps

I am trying to create an exportable (pasteable) list of all the verses in Matthew that contain the phrase "kingdom of Heaven" (KoH).

    This is very easy.

Do a phrase search for "Kingdom of God" (with quote marks!) in your favorite Bible and limit the scope of the search to Matthew.

Click on the Magnifying glass and choose "Save as Passage List."

To compare you'd need to create lists for Mark & Luke and put them in parallel tabs (columns) in Logos.

You first need to perform a Bible Search on "kingdom of heaven" then select Save as Passage List from the Search menu (under the Search icon on the left). This creates a list of verses from that search. Click on its menu (on the left) and select Print/Export..  from which you can choose how to get the list into Word.

For more on Bible Search see http://wiki.logos.com/Detailed_Search_Help

For more on Passage List see http://wiki.logos.com/Passage_List  especially the section on Merging, which lets you see the difference between two lists.

Graham:  This worked!!  THANKS!!!  This is my first successful Logos 4 project!!  I feel like such a Luddite.  I know I'm getting old, perhaps too old for software that's complicated; no one would believe me if I told them that my PhD thesis was basically a FORTRAN IV program to solve several simultaneous differential equations describing flow!!

Thanks again for your help...  Joe D

Dave:  Thanks for your help.  I got it to work.  There was still a lot of manual searching for synoptic gospel verses describing the same statement / event, but different words, Kingdom of Heaven vs Kingdom of God.  For all I know, there might be a way to have Logos search the cross references for each of the verses in the first query, but I don't have the foggiest idea how to do that...  It's like a second level search...

    Thanks again.  Joe D.  20121129

Richard:  Thanks for your input on this.  I finally got it to work.  I did the comparison with Mark & Luke outside of Logos, actually in Excel which is a lot easier to manipulate cells than Word; I have no idea how to set up "parallel tabs" in Logos...

    Thanks again.  Joe D.  20121129

    Just picking up on this.

From what you say you have the search working.

Incidentally, the phrase "kingdom of God" also appears in Matthew. You may want to search for either case "kingdom of God" or "kingdom of heaven" as that might be relevant to your study. You do this as shown below:

    image

So if you do this for both Matthew and Mark and then create Passage Lists for each one (Dave provided pointers to an article about this in his post) you are then in a position to view them side by side and see similarities and differences as Richard suggests

To do this, "click-and hold- on the top of the panel and drag it to a different place on the screen (within the Logos environment). The screen area will go blue indicating where the panel will end up if you release it. In the video at http://screencast.com/t/AtYnQvfm8YH  I am dragging the Passage List on Mark to be next to the one on Matthew.

    Hope this helps

You might find the Explorer window useful for this.

In the screenshot below I have one of the Passage Lists we have just created on the left, the NRSV in the middle and the Explorer window open on the right showing cross-references.

I have clicked on Mark 10:23 in the Passage List which took the NRSV to that point and the Explorer window went with it. I am then hovering over one of the cross references to see what it says in another Synoptic. If I clicked on that link then the Bible would move to that point

More details about the Explorer window are available at http://wiki.logos.com/Explorer
