Logos 3 to Logos 4 - how to search resources from within a text?

I have been forced to switch to Logos 4, as my Logos 3 quit working, and Customer Support told me they can't tell me what the problem is, and I should update to version 4 (after trying to SELL me version 5). So...

I'm a Pastor, and do most of my work from within a text. I had version 3 configured to automatically open in a few English translations, and either Greek or Hebrew. I got that set up in version 4, no problem. Here's my problem.

In version 3, I set it up sot that when I clicked on words in, say, the NAS, it would search specific books for that word. More importantly, I set it up so that when I clicked on a word in my Greek or Hebrew Bible, it would search specific original language sources that I prefer, at least at first look. After much plodding around, I can't figure out how to set version 4 up like this. It seems like it would be an easy/standard thing to do, but I'm not finding it.

Any ideas?

You should check out the wiki pages, particularly Prioritize Library on http://wiki.logos.com/Getting_Started_with_Logos

Once you prioritise your dictionaries, bibles and lexicons it will work much like L3.

I have prioritized my books, but when I double click, or right click, on a work in, say, the Greek text, I can't get it to search the language tools that I have "prioritized."

My original package is very, very old (1996,97), I think it was version 1, or maybe early version 2. It was, I think, the second highest package at the time - very small compared to current packages. I've also added many books along the way.

I don't have any Reverse Interlinears. I've considered them in the past, but prefer to be able to read a more uncluttered text in one window, original language in the other, with a couple of other versions open and available for comparison in the background.

I have looked through many of the training videos. Nothing seems to address setting this type of thing up. I can do the homepage, "type in a verse and click go," box, but that is not the type of study I do much of. I prefer to work from within the text itself.

I've got a bunch of Greek tools, but my tools of choice are Louw-Nida, BAGD, Kittle, and Little and Scott. As I had in Libronix, I'd like to be able to click on a word in the Greek text, and have it bring up these resources. For Hebrew, again I have several available, but the books I'd like the program to search with a click are BDB, and Holliday.

Try using Power Lookup from the Search menu after right clicking on the word. It should find your word in each the top resources you've prioritized.

What you will want to do is right-click on the word you want to look up.

A two column menu will appear.

From the right column choose "lemma" (this should 'stick' for the next time you right-click).

Then choose from the lower part of the left column the lexicon you want to open.

Regarding the reverse interlinears, in L4 and L5 you can set them up so the reverse interlinear portion is in a 'ribbon' like section at the bottom of the tab. This makes it easy to read in English, and easy to get to the underlying original language text behind that particular translation. I have found it to be much more helpful than I originally thought.

Thanks Bill and Richard. I had played with the "right click" window, and tried the power lookup. This will work, but is not what I would prefer. First, it searches a bunch more resources from my library than I am interested in, at least in my initial work. The upside is that my "preferred" books are the first ones listed, but I'm surprised that you can't easily get the program to just search what resources you want. Not a huge deal.

The second reason I preferred Libronix on this is that it would open each book in it's own window, not all of them together, in a small side-window with just a small portion of each article there to view. I still haven't figured out how to open the whole article, but I will, easily enough.

Looks like this is the best work-around, and I'll get used to it quickly enough. Thanks for the help.

I generally double-click to open the first, then if I want more, I use the right arrow to flip through one after another in the same tab. (Might be Ctrl-right arrow or something on PC.) If you prefer separate tabs instead, you can double-click on the empty space to the right of the tab to open the next in line, or you can click on the + to choose one further down the list.

Also take the time to learn how to use the right-click menu, and the various tools: Information, Power Lookup, Cited By, Explorer...

The videos you really want to look at are the ones at http://www.logosbiblesoftwaretraining.com/videos/. They will save you loads of time.

The main reason to have RI's isn't to look at them, but to get access to a number of features that won't work unless you have those RI links between English words and lemmas.

I think you're talking about the Information tool right? I don't use it - doesn't give me enough information and it just slows Logos down. I just right-click and select the lexicon I want to use to look up the word. Usually, I just leave the lexicon open in the tab I want it in. It will open from there the next time I want to look at it.

The Logos4/Logos5 way of doing things in this regard takes only a little more time, but it does give options you don't othewise have. For example, even if I usually want to look up a word in BDAG, sometimes I want to go straight to TDNT, or maybe I just want a quick definition like I'd get in DBL.

You'll notice some other ways that your 'work flow' will be different in L4 than Libronix. It will take time to get used to. But most of us who now use L4/L5 regularly now find Libronix clunky in comparison. In other words, it's worth the effort to learn to work with Logos4.

Be sure to check out the many free video tutorials, on using L4/L5. A few minutes a day of orientation to the new system can pay off big-time down the road.

One tip in Logos 4 OR Logos 5 is when an active tab is a lexicon, clicking "+" opens a new tab and displays list of resources in prioritized order that have headword so can quickly open many lexical resources. Then can drag tabs to arrange for viewing.

Of course, the best way to solve your problem is to buy another computer...one that can run L3 with no problems. Check out ebay...they have great deals on older systems that will run L3. As someone who will likely be using L3 right up to the end, I understand why you might have L4/5 dissatisfaction...because I have it, too. I run and use L5, but it is a dim wick compared to what L3 does for me in my daily usage. L5 is great for certain things, but at this point, I can't even imagine not having what L3 provides.

David .... on a few details, we think alike! (Tora Torah sounded to me like Midway.) But yes, I keep a full Libronix3 humming and a full Logos5 too. And since I can choose either (thanks to Bob!), I spend about 95% of my work time in Libronix. As Richard notes above, I use Logos5's immense research abilities when needed.

Of course that also means making sure there's plenty of XPs and W7-32's around the house. I'm not really uncomfortable with that; we also keep W95's running too and they're old enough to be worrying about their college fund.

I've often wondered why Libronix (for me) is the easier choice. I really think it's as simple as the clarity of the fonts and the snappiness. I like to work fast.

Just last week I tried out the Passage Guide! What a hoot. I've only owned Libronix for 7 years now. I like it! Mainly because I can pop the commentaries open without worrying about the layout.
