Theological Journals Advice

Hey all,

I'm considering purchasing the theological journals vols.1-10.. I've just started the $5 a month rental on the "g" site as a test. It's not a must have for me, but if it's extremely useful/helpful in Logos then I would be more inclined to get it. I'm seen some of the old threads concerning the journals but I was wondering 1) Are they easily searchable? 2) Is there a good table of contents or do I have to create my own? 3) If you are a preacher/pastor and you bought them in seminary, are they useful now or do they collect electronic dust? 4) Is there any other advice/suggestions you might have? Yes, they are easily searchable (as is anything) in Logos. Create a Collection for your Journals and then you can search within that collection.

You can use some of the search fields (e.g. author: ) to limit your searches:

Or most usefully search for Scripture references within them using <John 3:16> syntax (search within Journals collection for that):

I have found them as easily searchable as any other Logos resource.

2) Is there a good table of contents or do I have to create my own?

They have no table of contents, but you can hit the double arrow-head at the far left of the book panel just under the picture for a Logos generated table of contents.

3) If you are a preacher/pastor and you bought them in seminary, are they useful now or do they collect electronic dust?

I am not a pastor right now and am still going to seminary, but I have found them extremely useful for my classes and for some independent study for when I want to study a topic really in depth, which I love to do.

4) Is there any other advice/suggestions you might have?

I can think of no advice. I can just say that I got the Theological Journal vols. 1-9 package back in 2006 when I first got Logos and loved it so much that I get the new volume every year that it comes out.

I used them extensively when I researched a paper that I presented once at ETS, so if you plan to do such in your pastorate...

When you have a specific question, say like, baptismal regeneration, a journal article usually goes more in depth than a commentary, systematic theology book, or an entry from an encyclopedia, but shorter in length than treatment as a book.

Bottom line, you need to remember that you have them in your library and do a collection search with them.

Finally, having paper versions of journals is a huge hassle because there is no way to catalog their topics. But that problem is solved in Logos. My old journals are gathering dust in my garage and destined for the dump.

There are other journals which are of greater value such as JBL, JHS, JSNL. It's been an age since I used the Theological Journals 1-10.

While we can suspect that some or even most of our dear spammers really are human beings, we know for sure that they use the edit-trick. I personally have seen several times that spammers posted something and edited the post with links afterwards. Anyway, the current mix of measures taken by Logos (while needing a final tweak to excempt legitimate users from moderation) has reduced the visible spam to a minimum.

I know. I meant that tongue-in-cheek. If NBMick is right, that is human spammers do edit their posts, then having this backdoor shut is a good thing. But if a forum admin does shut that door after reading this thread, then they should at least also consider exempting regular forum members (say with post counts > 10 or 20 for example) from this moderation. Anyway sorry for hijacking the thread[:$] I'll shut up now [:#]
