I do a lot of reading on my iPad and need to go back and forth between different books. I usually use the two finger swipe function... But maybe some kind of tab system would work nice.

Tabs might be nice... but until that happens, You have some options: You can use the split screen; you can use the "history" feature; you can use one of the other apps (Logos, Vyrso, Verbum, Faithlife, etc).
