Buy now or wait?

I have a simple question. Since I'm a mac user and not a PC user, should I wait to buy Logos 4 until its ready to work on a mac? I know Logos 4 is now discounted. Will it be discounted when it's ready to run on the mac? Keep up the great work Logos!!!!

I've been told by Logos to expect the discount to remain in place until at least around Christmastime.

The Mac version certainly isn't up to snuff, but even if you buy now, you will have more resources to work with in your old install (if you are currently running the old version).

I work for Logos, but let me try to give you as unbiased advice as possible.

If you have the money, I'd buy now, for two reasons:

It's likely that the discounts available now are greater than the discounts that will be available later. I can't guarantee that. There could be equal discounts when Logos 4 for Mac is finished, but I think that's unlikely.
If you're using Logos for Mac 1, you can use most of your new books on that platform by purchasing this media-only disk. Even if you're not a user of Logos for Mac 1, you can download it for free and use your new base package on it and on the alpha version of Logos 4 for Mac.

To recap, you'll probably get the best deal by buying now, and you can use our previous generation software with most of your new books instead of or in addition to the alpha of Logos 4 for Mac until the latter is done.

I concur with Phil's opinion and want to add some more fuel. If you happen to run parallels or fusion, you can run the PC version of Logos until the Mac version at least hits Beta. Logos 4 Mac is not that usable in its current release, but the PC version is great. Plus, like Phil mentioned, you can at least get the previous version and at least have some functionality (the previous version is no where near up to the same standard as the Logos 3 on the PC). There is also no telling if the great deals you can get now will last. Just my two cents worth anyways.

So I bout the Original Languages package and am dutifully testing Alpha 5 now. But I don't see any of the resources in Logos Mac 1.2.2. How do I get them?

Unfortunately, on the Mac side, you will have to manually download each of the resources for 1.2.2. L4 will automatically download them for you, however. Make sure to select Tools->Library Management->Synchronize Licenses to make sure they will show up in your library unlocked. Also, some of the resources are new to Logos and are only compatible with L4 for the time being (I'm not sure which ones are affected by this, but I'm sure someone who knows more can tell you if a particular resource is only available on L4). Hope that helps.

I could be mistaken, but I think that you need to get the resources in 1.2.2 (old Windows version 3.0 format). You can download them off of the logos ftp server, or you can buy a DVD at a nominal cost with this on it.To be honest, the ftp option is not very easy because you don't know exactly which files to download.

Personally, I would like to see Logos offer to send the 1.2.2 disk and resources to any new Logos for Mac user at the initial POS when they buy L4 Mac. Otherwise, if they find that they can't run it well on virtual machines or Mac 4 Alpha(x) won't get the job done, they can immediately fall back on 1.2.2 Without offering it at the initial POS, the new Logos user has to go back to Logos and adds an extra (and potentially frustrating) step for a new user.

BTW, does anyone know what happened to the old 1.2.2 training videos that used to be on the site? Are they available by DVD as well or are they gone forever?

I took the plunge. The Mac version has proved to be almost useless for me so far. It hangs, the indexer soaks up my CPU -- making it worthless to do anything while the Indexer is running, etc. I tried to install Logos 4 under Parallels 3.0 / XP SP3 and it crashed when trying to start up the first time. I had a frustrating Thanksgiving day trying to get Alpha 5 to work on my Mac. I gave up.

However, the iPhone app has most of the resources that I bought, so at least I was able to browse them in there. Too bad not all of the commentaries are available on the iPhone yet, otherwise I could do substantial amounts of work with the iPhone app!

I am currently downloading my library onto a Windows Vista laptop that I have laying around. I hope that I will be able to do some work on it. I have L3 running on my Mac currently to do "serious" study.

I knew all of these issues could pop up when I bought L4 however. But I wanted the discount, and I also liked the idea of being able to access my library on my iPhone. So I took the plunge. While it's been frustrating -- I still feel this was a worthwhile investment. Exciting times!

There are no guarantees to be sure, but some of us have some success running L4 Mac. Alpha 5 runs fairly well on my iMac 27 with 10.6.2. By "fairly well" I mean that it has downloaded most of my resources and completed indexing. I can do a Passage Guide search and it searches my commentaries and media, but nothing else, not even bibles. But...I can drag bibles and other resources into the L4 window from a library window and make it look like the examples on the Logos web site. I can also read every resource in a window by itself. All this in addition to the iPhone app. Now this is hardly a completed product and some unknown action of mine will suddenly cause the program to quit and I lose everything I've done. This is to be expected. So...if you're willing to put up with all the incompleteness and uncertainty and thing you would enjoy watching the program progress through each release while at the very least enjoying the iPhone app, then I suggest you go for it. It's true that it may not run at all for you, but there is a money back guarantee. I for one am willing to struggle through a few months of growing pains to get the significant discount. This is just my humble opinion.

Not to be a nay sayer...but NAY!

This is FAR from a full version of the software - it is instead a teasing icon on your dock that reminds you that do not have anything like a functional version of L4. I have yet to be able to use this in any meaningful way. I don't have my resources, so extra resources that may be bundled with the new version mean nothing, since I don't have them. I can't download the newest version (A5) for an unexplained reason. I have used L1 a lot and loved it, but this software is not ready - and given its current state, I doubt heavily it will be ready in the time frame I keep hearing.

Wait. Enjoy your L1, it's a great piece of software.
