Free disc space on a Mac - system requirements

The system requirements "Recommended" for Logos 5 on a Mac are 30GB of free disc space. Potentially a stupuid question: Is this prior to installing Logos 5, or is that a requirement after Logos 5 and resources are installed? i.e. does it need 30 GB to run?

First, it depends upon the library that you own or will purchase. Secondly, 30 GB of "free space" on a computer isn't much "free space," especially if you are on a traditional hard drive. You would be very disappointed with performance if you don't give Logos room to breathe. What kind of Mac do you have? What is the HD like?

MacBook Air 64GB SSD, 4GB RAM, i5. Logos 5 runs smoothly and fast, but I have only had it for 2 days. It has 36GB freespace at the moment. My concern is that as i add things, the frespace will diminish to a point where Logos slows down. If the tech specs on the Logos site mean that 20GB freespace is needed at all time as a minimum and 30 GB recommended, then i am likely to see some performance issues sometime in the not too distant future. But, I have 12 days in which to return the MBA - just don't want to spend the extra money.

64 GB isn't realistic to run Logos, in my opinion, for most users. If you were using the computer for really nothing more than Logos & a word processor, you might be OK… Since you already are down to 36 GB, I would be hesitant. [Edit: I use my Mac's for MANY more things than just Logos]

On the flip side: an SSD hard drive isn't as susceptible to cramped space as a regular HD, and it is generally MUCH faster than a traditional HD.

Let me clarify: I believe Logos is just telling you that you will need that amount of space to install the app… it won't be free after you install it. I don't think Logos is making a value statement on the importance of free space, but rather how much "free space" will be needed to install the app.

I would really like to have a MBA to run Logos. Other users tell me that it screams compared to my MacBook. My greatest hesitation is that an MBA isn't really upgradeable… which means I am more likely to have to wait until I can afford a more expensive model. [;)]

Sounds like you're forgetting that Logos will need an awful lot of free space for the indexing, both the initial one and the one taking place every time a book is updated or a new book is bought.

The MacBook Air 64GB is going back tomorrow. It is super slick and quick, but at 64GB I do not think it is future proof to any sensible degree. One thing I like about it, is that it runs the full Logos 5, yet at 2.2lbs and its small size, it is like carrying a book that contains a whole library.

For Logos use, would look at 2011 (or newer) models with 4 GB Ram (or more) and 128 GB SSD (or more). Personally prefer 13" screen size.
