BUG?: Clicking Syntax Search Results opens LSGNT in different screen positions

I have a layout with LSGNT in the bottom right quadrant.

I am also running syntax queries on LSGNT. However, when I click on a search hit, a new instance of LSGNT appears in an unwanted screen position (given that panels are supposed to open alongside similar resources).

OK - double weird. The automatic screen position assignment code is now "flipping" between two screen positions.

Click a search hit - LSGNT opens in position 1 (bottom right)
Close LSGNT &
Click a search hit again.- LSGNT opens in position 2 (bottom left)
Close LSGNT.
Back to number 1 above. Round and round.

Yes. I've found similar inconsistencies with just two panes for resources.
