Timeline Questions

1 - What do the different colors and/or shading signify?

2 - I know there's a Filter that works by the text you type, and there are the "All" and "Biblical" filters. Are there any other ways to filter the information? (Maybe this will be for a future update - just see Kings, or prophets, or political events, or scientific events, or just events that appear in the specified books of the Bible, etc.).

3 - If I type "Micah" in the filter box, I know it will show me the events with "Micah" in the title. Is it possible that there are events related to Micah that would NOT have the word "Micah" in the title? And if so, is it smart enough to show them, too?

4 - More of a comment than a question, but the sheer number of events that appear vertically in the timeline can make it difficult to get my arms around what I'm looking at. It doesn't help that similar events aren't always near each other. (Thus, the need for more powerful filtering. But maybe there's a better, more creative way to address this.)

Hi Mark,

There are a few ways I try and make the timeline more useful. First of all there are really 3 filters. The first is to type a person in the search box; the second is to select biblical or all and the third is to hit ctrl F or cmd F (Mac) and then enter a name and use the up and down icons to scroll through the findings.

I usually start with biblical or click on the fit button and select an era. Once I find what I am looking for I select the all button to include the additional items. Here are three screen shots: the first is biblical for Paul; the second is all for Paul and the last is paul deleted, but the timeline stays at the time of Paul. Going from least to most works best for me. Edit: the screenshots are in reverse order. Start with the last and go to the first for my example please.

There is at least one video on the Logos site that provides a brief overview of the timeline.

1 - The different colors are only used to make it visually easier to separate different events (allowing the timeline to be more compact). At this time, they have no innate significance.

2 - The Timeline panel does support panel linking. It will display events from the linked resource at the top of the panel with a dividing line. This can be useful for focusing on what you are interested in.

3 - The filter box only searches the event title for matches.

4 - There are a lot of events, and there will be even more in the future as more resources are tagged! We do have some ideas about improving the grouping of events, but I don't know when any of these will be implemented.

My old brain isn't what it used to be, so I have two questions ..

1. I have "gleaned" now some knowledge from you re. Timelines. How do I look for it again unless I go back to this post? I couldn't find this kind of information at Wiki.logos.com

2. What is your source of having acquired knowledge of these workings? It seems I must learn how to use Timelines much, much better if I personally want the full benefit of the Timelines AND if I want to be helpful to other Logos Bible Software users ....

Hi Milford,

I have no source other than trying to figure out how to make the timeline most effective for my own use. You are welcome to elaborate and post something on the wiki if you find it helpful. Over the years I have learned that often times using Logos can be like drinking from a firehose. Limiting the results and then expanding usually provides me the best results. Sometimes Logos wants new users to see everything the program can do, but in the process can overwhelm. I don't wiki, so anyone who wishes is welcome to provide an article using my suggestions if they find them sufficiently helpful.

Thanks so much, John! I like your analogy "drinking from a fire hose"! Right on! My studies over the years have been similar to yours; and, frankly, sometimes I am indeed "overwhelmed."

I don't wiki either ....... never have ............ not likely to in the future ......... so .... I'm hopeful someone who can "handle the wiki" will see this post and move over some of your excellent response!
