NIVAC Sale

The NIVAC is down to $4.99 per volume right now in Kindle format. This is too good a deal to pass up unless I know there's a comparable sale with Logos in the near future. Is there any way to find out?

NICE! Thanks for the tip. And available individually! Sure beats paying over $20 a volume for the set.

Often times Logos can do nothing I remember asking why Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible was over twice as expensive on Logos compared to another software company and was told there was no way to come close to even matching the price. Now they have it at a comparable price. But i know for the longest time it was still priced far higher.

For some reason, Exodus by Peter Enns is missing from this deal. That is the NIVAC title to get, by consensus

It seems that volume isn't available for the Kindle at all.

Does Logos ever price match prices from other websites?

Occasionally publishers do sales across various formats, but there's never been any promise of price-matching from Logos. Remember a Logos book has rich mark-up not in a Kindle book, so the Kindle version is nearly always going to be cheaper. That said, $5 would be hard to resist if I didn't already own NIVAC in Logos.

I should add that it's exceptionally rare for Logos prices to drop below pre-pub levels, so I doubt we'll ever see NIVAC down to $5/volume. When there are heavy discounts, it's most often for a whole set. For example, the NT set did once go down to $250. I don't think it's ever been lower than that.

You can go to the Amazon page for the print book of NIVAC Exodus and click on the "Tell the Publisher! I'd like to read this book on Kindle" link.

I have a read a lot of comments about the poor quality of the kindle editions.  Anyone have perspective on that?

Its a shame, I'd find a way to come up with the 200$ required to get that into my library. Might just have to pick them up in Kindle. For anyone whose purchased them, are they DRM'd?

Amazon has allowed return of Kindle purchases within 10 days or so.  I'd check to make sure that policy is still in effect -- then buy a few volumes and check them out.  I'd be surprised if there was a quality problem . . .

I have had very good quality on the Kindle books that I have bought. I would be astonished if there was a quality problem. The advantage of Logos - especially with commentaries - is the integration with your Logos library. That is a big advantage, but there comes a point where it is not worth the higher price. I personally tend to pay the higher price to have commentaries and language tools in Logos format. Anything else, price is the deciding factor. I used to try to get everything in Loos. That is no longer practical for me.

I haven't bought any of the NIVAC commentaries, but I was very disappointed with the quality of another commentary I bought. To be fair to Amazon, reading the text is fine, but the OCR has failed pretty spectacularly. So searching is hopeless, and copy/paste is full of errors.

I have been looking around at them. So far I have found that the table of contents in the Genesis commentary is not linked so that it is hard to find your way to the next section. A few of the others have the table of contents linked so that if you want to look at a certain pericope such as Ecclesiastes 2 for example, you can click on it and get right to it. I hope that this helps.

I picked up the Old Testament books and outside of some of them not having a linked table of contents the material is fine. With some creative searching you can find your way to the section of the book that you may be looking for.

    Mark,

I have only bought a few Kindle items that were unavailable in Logos. I was very disappointed in the quality. Doing copy/paste is especially difficult. Have to proofread everything and make corrections to what was pasted.

Now most of them are at $4.74 each. (John, 1 Corinthians, and Revelation are $4.99).

    Mark (and Edwin):

Thanks for mentioning the existence of these kinds of problems with Kindle books.  This changes the calculation on their value.

I'm spoiled by Logos quality and made an obvious error assuming other formats had similar accuracy.

At Zondervan's website, the NIVAC's can be purchased at different retailers which appear to have other electronic book formats, for instance CBD sells ePub.

What is known about the quality of the other ebook formats?

Also, everyone should note that not all of the volumes are available as Kindle editions. The question would be whether or not you wanted to switch in and out of programs to take notes, etc. One other thing I will throw out there is that I have heard of issues with Kindle and ownership rights. For example, Chalies.com or one of the Christian blog sites reported once that everyone should understand that when you purchase a Kindle book, you are actually leasing the information. There have been cases where someone was suspected of monkey business with their Kindle account and lost all of their digital material from Kindle. I don't think you would ever have to worry about this with Logos. And, Kindle has a copy/paste restriction limit with all of their books. If you are going to be using these resources on a regular basis and copying from them, you will only get so many attempts to copy and paste before it will no longer let you. This could be a problem for some of you.

Hi Matt! Welcome to the forums. [:)]

I agree with you about the superiority of Logos resources… but you should know that this is true of ALL digital resources. When you purchase music from iTunes, a movie, software, or a book, you are purchasing a license to that resource. That isn't unique to Kindle.

I have run into that problem. I have to proof-read anything that I copy from Kindle. Doesn't copy well.

Then I ran into the limit restriction which I wasn't aware of. Certainly reduces their value to me.

Also, if u want to pick and choose which commentaries are best in the set, especially if you are low on funds, go to: http://bestcommentaries.com/topseries/  This website is from Denver Seminary and show reviews from D. A. Carson, Tremper Longman, etc.

     Hope this helps

Unfortunately, this is true! Some of the books are difficult to search. The good thing is they will refund your money within seven days of the purchase. So u could try it out and see if it's problematic for your situation. I own a kindle Fire HD by the way. another problem is that u can't copy and paste like u can on logos software.

Really?  That has not been my experience at all.  I have found that an older version of Kindle, rather than the Windows 8 one is much better for copy and paste and search.  But I surely do not find it difficult, especially for commentaries.  And I have produced some great Logos books from them with just little editing for my personal use.  I wouldn't have a C. S. Lewis collection without them.

I agree with Michael on this.  I uninstalled the Windows 8 app because it didn't work well at all, but the Windows 7 Desktop version works much better for me.  You can use the Windows 7 program on Windows 8.

What I would really like to know about this is:

Are there any volumes of the NIV Application Commentary available in the Zondervan sale that are NOT available in Logos?

Since I have this set in Logos, I would only be interested in getting what Logos doesn't carry.  At that price I would use them until Logos editions become available.

No.  The Z sale includes the same 42 that Logos sells.  The only volumes still to be published in the series are Ezra-Nehemiah and Psalms 2.

I would be happy if the NIVAC just had dynamic pricing!
