Quick method for installing on multiple computers
Comments

Tech support logged on to my computer yesterday, did a complete uninstall and reinstall and we still have the same problems. They looked at the directions here and didn't recommend using them, but then again their way didn't work either. At least my problems appear to be unique to any they've experienced so far. Thanks again for all of your help. I'm not convinced they are sure how to do a 100% clean uninstall yet. At least Logos 4 works on my kids older laptop with the bare minimum requirements. They just won't get to use it much yet.

How did they try to install and what was the problem?
100% clean uninstall isn't necessary if you are re-installing as long as you do the two uninstalls of Logos4 application and Prerequisites (in that order).

He said it didn't matter which one I uninstalled first, I did prerequisites first. The deleted all of the Logos 4 folder. If the order matters I'll try it again, nothing is working at this point.

That's the order I do it in, but it may not be important (and you can't undo it!). What problems did they have with the install?

After the uninstall he downloaded the files from the internet rather than from my DVD. At some point he downloaded the resources from my DVD and then eventually took the books off of my portable hard drive. He wanted Logos 4 to reindex on it's own and that's when we ran into the old problem of the indexer crashing and sometimes Logos 4. I have version 3 on both machines I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. I have the last log files I sent him yesterday.

Here's the log files.

Also the icon in the taskbar... if you try to pause indexing or downloading from there it doesn't work. you have to kill it in task manager.

Weird. Have you got all the updates for .NET 3.5? You might want to go to the Windows Update site and see what it offers.

Is there a way to tell if it is already on your machine? I am up to date on all of my windows updates.

L4 would install it if not present. If you are up to date then I'm out of ideas!

Dave, Thank you very much for your time. I'll let you know how this all turns out.

I uninstalled the way you suggested doing prerequisites 2nd and reinstalled. My books were there but I couldn't open them so I deleted Resource Manager.db and restarted. It wanted to re-index so I let it until the indexer crashed again. I killed indexing in Task Manager and did a search for election. It says that search results may be missing or incorrect while your library is being indexed but pulled 46,309 results 21600 in 1.13 seconds. I did the search on my old laptop and got the exact same info but it took 3.9 seconds. Is there a way to manually disable indexing? I also have version SR-6.

Have you got a "supplemental" index in \Logos4\Data\{random}\LibraryIndex?
Dave

Yes there are the files I pasted and several that say index-build.

I don't know how to stop it indexing. But if it still wants to do so after you kill it, I can only suggest deleting all the supplemental files and see what happens (it may do a shorter supplemental index or start all over). It's up to you!
The cleanest option is to delete everything in the LibraryIndex folder as it will force a complete index!
EDIT it is trying to do a complete index now I see your files! Try deleting the files with "-build" in their name + LibraryIndex (see what happens!)

We tried that yesterday and still had the indexer crash. [:(]

Ok last shot! But involves full indexing from a fresh install (no pasting folders from your portable drive)
Uninstall and reinstall L4.
Start L4 & sign-in
Cancel any download.
Set Automatically Download Updates = NO in Program Settings
Type scan <path to ResourceManager\Resources on portable drive> into the Command bar
exit L4
If indexing has started, Pause it and kill it in Task Manager!
Restart L4 whilst holding Ctrl key. Select the "Offline" option.
It should read your portable drive and start indexing with logs because of the Ctrl key.

I have tried every example in this thread. I finally downloaded everything like Logos said to and the indexer crashed again. They uploaded a file from my computer today for the developers to look at. I appreciate everyone's help but I don't know what to do. Today I left the installation on this computer and replaced all of the files as directed. It still wants to index into infinity even though I can search everything quickly. I kill indexer in task manager and it works OK for a while and then the program crashes. I have no idea what else to do. This really stinks. I've never had this kind of problem with any other software I've purchased. If anyone has any more ideas I would appreciate it. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what it could be.

Have we tried copying your complete old laptop installation across? Assuming it is still working OK.
If you still have an installation on the problem machine then:-
* backup a full working installation ...\Logos4\ to an external drive
* Go offline eg. disable your Network Connection in Windows, remove network cable
* delete the new installation ...\Logos4 folder
* restore the full \Logos4 folder from the external drive
* start L4 whilst holding Ctrl key (sign-in if necessary)
* set Automatically Download Updates = NO in Program Settings
* Close L4
* Go online eg. enable your Network Connection in Windows, insert network cable
* start L4
... the standard installation path is:-XP -> C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Logos4
Vista/Win7 -> C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Logos4

Can I leave my desktop shortcut and use it? Also will there be a problem since the same funky Logos destination folder description will be the same on both computers? Thanks again.

Also do I need to uninstall logos and logos prerequisites in my programs?
0 -
Shortcuts won't be affected.
Do not uninstall anything. Provided you have an installation on the new/problem computer all you are doing is getting rid of its Logos4 folder (and sub-folders!) and replacing it with a *working* Logos4 folder.

That's just a warning. Please don't touch it in this installation after all the heartache you've been through! When 4.0a is released merging will be a different process and you could attempt it then!
So do all your updates/downloads AND indexing in the stable installation, then use the same method to transfer it all to this installation (set Automatically Download Updates = NO in Program Settings).
For future issues let's break out of this thread into a new one!
regards,
Dave

I decided to do the supplemental indexing before I heard back from you and I did a regular update as well. It crashed so I am redoing it now and will follow your further instructions.

Just wondering, after copying the index file do the search results remain accurate?
FYI: Logos advises against copying an index file as there may be repercussions to using the search.

It works OK, I've had a lot of other issues. Don Everett has been working on it at Logos end and Dave Hooton has been helping me from the forum. Don had me do a completely new install from the internet and it still had problems so I followed Dave's last solution and it has worked the best.

Do you really delete the data folder and replace all of it? That took 2 hours to from my laptop to my home computer. The update took less than 2 hours. I'm guessing I misunderstood something - it transfered 8.25 gb's and the download was only 1.8 It then goes through the whole preparing your library thing it did when I first installed, took 10 minutes or so. So when I did the update from the internet today, less than an hour beginning to end, but this way, over 2 hours.
It did however work, it's updated, works fine, and it seems to be all indexed, it is not indexing.
I must be doing something wrong, because this method of updating L4 from one computer to another is worse than the installing it on both from the internet.

Yes - but see http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers Method 1.
The idea is to download & index on one computer only and then copy it to other installations. If the indexing was short then I prefer to use Method 3!!
If you do not need to install L4 then ignore the download and install step!

That depends on what stage of the procedure you are at. Are you in backup or restore stage? Are you at install or copy over stage?
Sarcasm is my love language. Obviously I love you.

This worked great for me! Thanks!
Matthew Friend said:Hi Folks:
There have been a lot of posts here on the forum so someone else may have already mentioned this.
I have 4 different computers that I needed to install Logos 4 (platinum) on. Altogether I have about 2300 books.
The first computer I installed it on took forever it seem (many hours) to download and then index everything.
I can now do the whole process (from installing to and including indexing) in less than 30 minutes.
Here is what I did if anyone is interested:
1. I copied the directory/folder that contains all of the Logos4 data to an external hard drive. (On Windows 7 this is normally located under: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Logos4
2. On the second computer Install Logos4.
3. When the New install of Logos4 on the new computer has finished installing you will need to log into your account before Logos 4 will begin downloading.
4. Once the Logosindexer begins downloading resources, Kill the download (Right click on the task bar, select task manger/kill the logos process).
5. Copy the Logos4 folder that you backed up over the new install on the new computer.
6. Delete this file: "ResourceManager.db" (It is located in the Data>something.mbd>ResourceManager folder.
7. Delete the something.mbd folder in the Logos4>Data folder that does NOT contain the files you copied from the external hard drive (I think it will work without doing this, but I like a clean drive. Do NOT delete the folder you just copied over).
8. Start/Run Logos 4. It should go through the 3 steps starting. It will recreate the ResourceManager.db file as it searches and finds all of the books you copied over. Since you copied over the index file, that will not run again.
I've tried this on 3 different computers and it works like a charm. I didn't have to download or re-index all off the books again.... It is getting late at night so I hope that makes sense.

I wanted to let everyone know that I tried doing it Dave's way and it works with less steps than the way I did it.
Will this also work with updates and when adding new books to the program?
Matthew Friend said:His steps are pretty self-explanatory, but if anyone is interested I made a short flash video that shows the steps.
I tried to use the video but it would not open. Any suggestions?

The updated Methods can be found at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers. Note that software updates have to be applied to each installation. But the methods can save much time with downloading and/or indexing resource updates and new resources (there isn't much point with resources that take minutes to download and index).
VivianMatheson said:I tried to use the video but it would not open. Any suggestions?
The video is no longer relevant. Ask any Q's you like about the methods on the wiki.

It should be noted (in the wiki at least) that the backup-process also means to uninstall the original. My search for advice how to relocate Logos4 from one drive to another lead to this wiki-article, but the problem is L4 cannot be installed twice on a same computer. The installer just bounces you with "Logos 4 is up to date"-message. The uninstalling is perfectly safe and totally necessary in the process.
The wiki might need another addition about the Home page: I didn't see any pictures there until I pressed F5 and waited for a few minutes.

Not at all - the process is primarily for installation to multiple computers given that you have one working installation!

If you want to adapt it for re-installing to another drive then you do have to uninstall the original AFTER performing the backup

You might want to suggest this in a new thread.
