Pulling Vyrso resources

I discovered something very irritating today. It seems that several books that were complete, published, and available for purchase and download have been removed from Vyrso and pulled into Logos prepub packages. In the following collection, Global Missions Collection (http://www.logos.com/product/33561/global-missions-collection), at least five of these twenty books were already published on Vyrso and available for a very reasonable price.

This seems to me like a money-making scheme and a misuse of prepub sales. As I understand it, prepub and community pricing are designed to bring in the finances to publish previously unpublished books for the benefit of both the buyer and the company. Now, books that could have been purchased individually for $8-$20 are now removed and locked into a collection for $270 ($385 after prepub ends!) and advertised as a great deal.

This is an unfortunate trend I would like to see reversed.

A few thoughts:

Some resources slip into Vyrso that Logos would prefer to have as Logos resources.
Vyrso editions are not as nice as Logos editions
Vyrso has a completely different licensing agreement with the publishers.
Logos does not intend to have two separate editions of a resource.
You need to separate your distaste for bundling with a Vyrso migration to Logos... They are different issues.
Logos loses no matter what they do. For everyone complaining about the issues you raise, another complains about the "quality" (or perceived lack thereof) of Vyrso editions.

Did you not grab the resources in question before they were pulled?

Some good observations and comments have already been made. I'd just add that if someone owns the Vyrso version, they'll be "upgraded" free to the Logos version if it is discontinued and moved to Logos (at least according to past experience).

Could someone clarify how Vyrso resources are different from Logos resources? The only difference I've seen is the publishing of scholarly resources vs. popular resources. Both versions work on the same software with the same functionality.

To answer the other question, no I didn't purchase the resources before they were pulled. I had been watching my upcoming seminary textbooks for months, but I'm advised not to purchase them until the semester starts, in case the professor changes books. Well now, my semester has started and I went to purchase my books on Vyrso, but they're gone. I live in rural Africa and can't have hard copy books sent to me, so it looks like I'm gonna be stuck with the Kindle editions.

I am not the best person to answer this question, but this is what I know. The tagging in Vyrso resources are all done by a script; no human contact is used in the creation process. The tagging engine that Vyrso makes mistakes, and in some resources the tagging has been very very very very bad in the Vyrso resource.

The production of a Logos resource has more QC involvment - and thus are of a better quality.

While I don't work for Logos so this is 2nd hand information, I understand that Vyrso runs the text as supplied by the Publisher through an automatic filter that identifies references to Scripture and tags the citation appropriately. Logos resources involve a person manually reading through the text and assigning tags to Scripture citations as well as links to other Logos resources like commentaries and lexicons.

I share your disappointment that some resources have been pulled and bundled for some future release. You cite the missions books, but the same thing has happened with Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics which used to be sold as a single Logos title, but has been pulled in order to bundle it in a future release that costs over $450. Which leaves the student who needs to get it immediately left in a bind where other vendors will benefit.

Vyrso books are automatically converted directly from the publishers ePub files, whereas Logos editions utilize human labor to create. Similar to "personal books," Vyrso editions can range in quality. Some might not have a functioning table of contents. Others might not have proper footnote popups. Scripture is auto-hyperlinked, but problems can and do arise. (When a passage is written "John 3:16," there isn't a problem… When the reference is just "3:16" the compiler might get confused. "v 16" might not get picked up at all). When another resource is referenced, Logos editions strive to link to that resource. Not so with Vyrso editions. Vyrso edition books are "bare bones," "plain jane" eBooks, whereas Logos edition resources are considered "value added."

Your best bet might be to create personal books from the Kindle editions. At this point, the personal books don't sync, so they won't be available on mobile… but you would have access to them in your desktop library. (At some point they should sync… Logos is working on it, but we have no time table for completion).

Had to do that with some titles from my seminary today actually.

Well worth having them in Logos, even if they are more akin to a vyrso book.
