Bug - Nehemiah crashes program

The 'New Beta' has not solved the problem that I reported here...

Bug - Logos added to list of Nehemiah's Adversaries

with the New Beta my Logos look like this...

The crash, which is constantly repeatable, follows the same route as shown in the thread above.

but to save you looking there...

Open Logos

From the home page type "Nehemiah 1" in the go box

(the hardwired layout comes up with ESV in the top box at Nehemiah 1 : 11 and ESV Study Bible in the bottom box showing Nehemiah 1 : 11)

Scroll the bible back to the start of Nehemiah and click in the text.

Crash. Program unresponsive. Force Quit.

This bug has survived a 'Rebuild Index' a reinstallation of the Engine and an update to the Beta - it is present on the stable version running on a MacBook Air and the Latest Beta running on an iMac.

I might add that all other methods of accessing this text do not seem to cause any problems. I guess to reproduce the problem you must follow the same steps.

This might also have something to do with prioritization. Mine opens to Nehemiah 1:1 with ESV on top and EEC below, as I have commentaries prioritized above the study Bibles.

Maybe not. Move ESV SB above commentaries, and mine opened to Nehemiah 1:1 with ESV at the top and ESV SB below.

Could not make it freeze.

From the logs, it appears that the Text Comparison tool which is part of Link Set A is laying out the text to be displayed in that panel and should eventually finish. Given that, which resources do you currently have Text Comparison set to use?

When I first enter the layout (when the ESV and ESV study Bible open to Nehemiah 1:11 instead of 1:1 as I would expect the Text Comparison panel looks like this...

Once I scroll back to to Nehemiah 1 :1 and before I click in any text the panel looks like this...

I notice that the reference in the Text Comparison Panel has changed to Nehemiah (without the 1)

I have left the program in its non-responsive state now for about five minutes - it doesn't look as if anything is going to finish.

Here is a screen shot of the whole layout...

Thanks for the additional information. The application is hanging due to trying to layout the comparison text for all of Nehemiah for all five resources that you have specified so it will take a while, although it should not take the five minutes you waited. There was an issue that slowed down text layout in several different panels, including the Search Panel, that was fixed in 5.1b SR-2 that shipped today and will be in the next Beta of 5.2. I am not seeing the extended delay in generating the Text Comparison on 5.1b SR-2, can you confirm if it has improved for you with 5.1b SR-2?

Martin - thank you again for your time - I think we may be able to help a few others if we can nail down the problem and implement a few solutions.

Reporting now as I test...

I have down loaded and started 5.1b SR-2 (5.1.2.2083).

I have entered into the 'Go' box 'Nehemiah 1'. (I realise that this is a chapter and that it may have been better to enter 'Nehemiah 1:1 but it is the sort of daft thing that users do :-) )

Bug The standard layout has appeared but the text has set to Nehemiah 1:11 rather than Nehemiah 1:1 as would be expected. The text comparison panel appears to have processed the first chapter.

I have now scrolled up to Nehemiah 1:1 and the Text Comparison has remained at Nehemiah 1.

Bug As soon as I scroll past the start of the chapter and reveal part of the last line of the introduction Text Comparison jumps to showing the whole of Nehemiah! (i.e. The Text Comparison Panel shows 'Nehemiah' instead of 'Nehemiah 1'). This was both unexpected and unhelpful.

Comment Almost always running Text Comparison over a huge length of text is not going to be a deliberate action by a user. The resulting display is cumbersome and slow to respond. Only frivolous achedemics (as opposed to the serious sort) will try this sort of thing on purpose. The length of text that the program tries to process in Text Comparison should be limited unless a specific endpoint has been entered as a request.

e.g. 'Nehemiah 1' would process that chapter, Nehemiah 1 :10 would process to the end of chapter 1. 'Nehemiah' would process only the first 100 verses of the book unless a specific endpoint had been entered for instance Nehemiah 1:1 - 4:5. This would provide a much better user experience.

The display took about about 15 seconds to return following the change to the whole book. This is an improvement with this release.

Bug During those 15 seconds processing the 'unresponsive' (coloured) wheel showed instead of the processing symbol (see Information Panel in last screenshot above).

In order to check that the Text Comparison window had indeed processed the whole of Nehemiah I attempted to float the panel. This again was a slow process and the resulting panel sluggish.

I hope that these observations and Bug reports will be useful in developing the software.
