New English Translation of Hodge's Systematic Theology?
Does anyone know if a new more modern translation of Hodge's Systematic Theology exists? In particular it would be nice if one existed that translated all of his latin quotes into english. He quotes latin authors extensively to prove his pioints and unless the reader knows latin these points don't make any sense.
If such a thing doesn't exist, I wanted to post this as a kind of suggestion to Logos to start a work on a translation of Hodge's Systematic Theology that included english translations of all his latin quotes, and all the footnotes that are in other languages.
If anyone either knows of a current translation that solves this problem, or would be interested in Logos making this a translation project, please respond to this thread.

Peace to all! Not that I would be opposed per se, however, I would think that Logos should keep the old pre-translation edition for sale for those who desire it after the translation was made and the new resource was on the market. There is a certain "precision" in the old, traditional Latin ecclesiological terms; and a translator would have to be "mighty careful" to preserve the true meaning of the Latin phrases according to our historical understanding of them. A dangerous business, eh??? *smile*

Hodge wrote in English. There is nothing to translate unless you men his outed from others in foreign languages.

Hodge, of course, wrote in English. While admittedly English has changed a bit in a over a hundred years, a bigger change is that of familiarity with ancient languages. I suppose when Hodge's System was published, it could be honestly said that a person wasn't educated until they could read (and write) in Greek and Latin. That is not the case anymore, and this is a barrier in dealing with a great deal of theological literature.
And so it is debated how much or little to deal with this issue. There are dictionaries to assist with Theological Latin terms and vocabulary like Bretzke's Consecrated Phrases and Muller's Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms which are designed to let today's readers understand these classic works. There are also modern editions of some of these classic works which either add translations of all non-English text, or sometimes even replace all non-English text. For many of us logosres:cwccphlp is much more useful than logosres:ccgnt-php (to use a drastic example).
The problem with at least the most drastic of the modern editions is that they leave us dependent on the editors. They give us fish, instead of teaching us how to fish. Is Hodge meant to be the be-all of all theological research? If so, then I suppose it should be put fully into English for us Americans who are afraid of any foreign language that may show up on the page. But it it is meant to be a statement and bridge into the great Reformed Theological tradition, then, perhaps a new edition should be prepared which nurses us into that theological vocabulary. Maybe this can start as community notes, but to be honest, I wonder what percentage of Logos users really would be aware of any such notes on Faithlife... Maybe the goal for such a project should be a new edition, like the Logos edition of Shedd's Dogmatic Theology...

That's a great idea! If anyone who is not ancient language challenged (like myself) was interested in creating a community notes project on faithlife that would be great!
This resource in particular sometimes has entire paragraphs that are in latin, which makes looking up each word in a latin dictionary and then trying to peice together the sentences way too much time/effort than I have to devote to it.

I created a Faithlife group for this! If you are able to read Latin and would like to help some others read it please join! If you would simply like to read the Latin portions in any of your resources please join as well- and when possible try and post a note for a one or two word translation with google translate. Hope this group is helpful for those reading through some older resources!!!
