managing offline books on the iPad for storage space

So having a 16GB iPad has unfortunately meant managing space sometimes. Aside from my photos, Logos rings in at nearly 1GB of offline books, and I need to manage that space.

It seems like it's a lot easier said than done. What I'd like is to be able to at a glance gather the books that I have set as "Offline", see their relative file size, and remove the ones that I'm unlikely to need absent a strong internet connection.

Instead, the only way I've found to do this is scroll through the list of all my books manually with huge finger swipes and try to spot the ones with the "darker" info icon flying past (thank God I figured out that that meant offline... previously I was choosing EVERY SINGLE ONE). If I'm quick enough to stop the scrolling list, I can bring up the info pane and choose Remove. But I have no idea if I just freed up 512k or 100mb.

Maybe I'm missing something, like a hidden search command that will show only offline books, and a way to sort by file size.

I can't help you with file size... you are on your own for that one. I do have a trick, however, that should help you out. You can do one of two things:

Use the syntax local: to show only downloaded resources.
Turn your device to "airplane mode"

In most cases, #1 will be the best choice for you.

As for file size, obviously, anything with photos has the potential to be on the larger size. If you have downloaded the Faithlife or ESV study bibles, those are fairly large.

I see that I only have 20 resources local: so now to figure out what's so huge that it's nearly a GB!

Well, here's a significant follow up question.

I was selectively deleting hoping to find the key resource hog book. But while I dropped the storage use each time (switching to Settings->General->Usage each time to look), I wasn't seing major gains. So I went ahead and removed every single book under the "local:" search.

Guess what?

iOS still says that Logos is taking 460 MB for "Documents and Data"

An additional 72.1 MB for the app itself, for a total of 532MB.

I was under the impression that if I was deleting locally stored resources down to nothing, the Documents and Data number would also be zip. Or really low.

What gives?

ALL of your notes will sync to mobile... Do you have large note files? Also, is there any chance you downloaded the Lexham English Bible audio? FYI - My iPhone installation is 331 MB, with 4 Bibles, 1 study bible & 1 book.

I did noticed the Lexham English Audio thing. The Bible itself looked as if it had been download (which I don't recall, but whatever), but I removed it. I've gone back and looked and it does not look like the audio is installed.

There's gotta be something else. Unlisted and huge.

If not, the numbers are deceiving, and somehow required app files are being listed as documents and data, not app size. For example, Garage Band shows an app size of 689 MB (it's complex app), and then I have an additional 67 MB of some smaller audio projects on it.

Update: Since it seemed to be stuck taking over 500 MB with no local resources, I decided to delet the Logos App completely.

Then I reinstalled it.

When I went to the App store to grab it, it said the App would take 41.3 MB.

I downloaded and installed, and have signed in, and then went back to usage.

Success! Sort of. The Logos app size is now what it was before: 71.1 MB. (not 41.3...). And the documents and data is only 20.3 MB. That's more like it.

That solved my immediate problem, but doesn't answer the issues of the inconsistencies and problems I list above, I hope Logos will look into this further.

I dont know if there is a discrepancy or not... The difference may be a download size vs. app size. It also may be that the app downloads other things not considered part of the "documents and data"... for example, the reverse interlinear may be part of that larger number.

The 400mb problem you had before is interesting. The simplest answer is that at some point the audio for the LEB did actually download... In any case, I would have suggested you delete the app but you figured that out on your own. [:)]

Apple store apps are compressed (as with most software packages on every platform); this is why it's 41.3 MB (before install) on the app store and 71.1 MB (after install) on your device.

I copy the request to see size per resource. I love Logos because I can have a great library with me all the time. But I struggle with free space on my 16GB iPad.

I know this is an old thread. Are you still having issues? For clarification... when you write "almost no note," have you considered highlighting? (Highlights = Notes).
