For those who don't have solid state drives what disk defragmenting tool do you use ?

Disk Defragmenter, the one that comes built in with Windows. Why would you need any other? (Unless you're on a Mac.)

I use it frequently and am quite happy with it! I often use it while I'm using the computer for other things .... however, when Logos 5 is indexing, I delay using it ..

Hi Rosie! Blessings! I've always had trouble with the windows defragger after Windows 7, before that I used it all the time... now I have Windows 8.1 and haven't tried it since I'm so happy with DeFraggler.. Maybe I'll try it sometime; however, it seems so complicated ... *smile*

I really like MyDefrag (freeware) which has multiple options for the kind of defragging (data disk, system disk, consolidate free space, throrough, and more) you want, as well as the depth of defrag you want. It's easy to schedule via the Windows task scheduler, together with the use of some scripts (provided), together with step by step instructions in the help file (though this may still intimidate some).

The author warns to use only on healthy hardware. Don't blame me if it kills your HD.

IIRC windows handles SSD differently, because of the seek times and so forth it actually improves the life of your drive to have the data spread out, and (again because its so fast already) the overhead in terms of time is next to non existent.
Think of each individual data bit as being similar to a lightbulb. That lightbulb can only be turned on and off so many times before it burns out.
Modern SSD's are supposed to have a 50,000 hr life span (at least thats what mine is warranted for). But I suspect that is in part because they intentionally fragment the drives.
De-fragmenting is actually contraindicated by most every source I could find.
Here are a few posts that make a similar recommendation.
Before you read them, I include the caveat that there are modern software solutions that include software for "defragmenting" your ssd. However in practice those simply "optimize" the data, and don't really defrag. Some speed improvements may be gained. BUT ONLY IF ITS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH AN SSD.

Like Rosie I use windows, now and then norton lets me know that I need to use defrag the norton 360 has. There are so many on the market, including free and you can scramble your brain reading and trying to figure which is best for your machine. Defrag your brain and think about what drives you have, to include brand, black or green, speed, heads etc. Sometimes it is best to know your drives and see what the manufacturer recommends. For the most part, use what is with your system or possibly what came with your drive (know what's on your hard drive, you might have 1 hidden). For SSD, check manufacturer also (of course that means both fragmenter and defragger). Best of luck.

Free Version of both deFraggler and cCleaner ................I have thought about the paid version; however just never investigated to see if the value is there ....

I have used Defraggler and currently use CCleaner. The primary difference between the paid and free versions is the support option. When you start thing of network level programs, there is a major difference, being monitoring and multi system control.

The Pro version was advantageous only because it was packaged with CCleaner Pro. By itself, get the free version.
