What is the asterisk (star) symbol in Nestle-Aland?

It is driving me nuts, and I can't find it by searching Logos helps, nor even in the introduction to Nestle-Aland! What does the asterisk (I think that is what the "star thingy" is called, isn't it?) mean? For example, Jn. 6:64 and several other places in my John reading? I can't say I have ever seen it in reading the Greek NT before I got this new Logos program. Thanks!

check out http://www.viceregency.com/NA27symbolsabbrev.pdf I found it through a Google Search. according to page 2 "A raised asterisk identifies the original reading when a later correction/alteration was made to the manuscript."

I just pulled out my NA27 Greek – English text and looked up in the critical sign section and it says this (“* Identifies the original reading when a correction has been made.”)
