No matter where you move the slider the small text does not change in size.

I don't use this feature often. I can confirm that the size slider has no effect on the actual word list items. I am also on Mavericks. See screen shot:

There's already a case for this. I reported it in December: BUGS: font slider issues in Word Lists.
